Placed an online order for a used hardback book. Condition listed as "Book in Very Good condition...No marks in text." Within one minute of flipping through the book (i.e. not a thorough search), I found twelve instances of marginalia. There is also a prominently-sized name and date written in pen on the inside cover page. No marks indeed! I suspect lack of care in inspection rather than purposeful deceit. But either way, beware of false descriptions. read more

It's a smaller bookstore however in Springfield that is quite common especially downtown. It's a used bookstore so the selection is based on what is donated and selected. There are books everywhere. On and off the shelves and there are different free resources depending on the time of year. Also typically there is a puzzle for people to solve. This store was not too shabby! I saw some friends of mine had gone so I went to try it out. The aesthetics are the best part of this shop, and the cat inside! Hahaha! As far as the books though, while there were plenty and they were decently organized, I didn't walk out with anything. Most books are heavily used, but there are plenty to look through and great deals on many! I don't plan on going back any time soon, but it was fun to try it out! read more

It's much harder than you'd think to do the quaint downtown bookstore thing, and this is honestly doing it better than anywhere in Portland.

This is a fairly new, great little intelligentsia-friendly bookstore. Walking in at first, I thought maybe the inventory was low and the shelves hadn't been put up yet, as I'm used to used book stores that have piles of books everywhere with boxloads of garage sale crap that one has to wade through like to find diamonds in the rough. I usually get a kick out of that feeling until a half-hour later when the weight of utter futility has set in and I realize, indeed, I'm not finding anything decent and I learn what it must be like to live in a Soviet-style dictatorship where someone has cruelly banned the Vonneguts and whatnot. That type of materialistic capitalist hoarding hasn't set in at this bookstore, and least not as-of the date I went last. They looked to specialize more in classics, notable modern authors, and well-reviewed contemporary works. Out of all the used book stores I've been to (a fair amount), this one is the furthest left on the quality-quantity balance, and that's not a bad thing. Prices seemed reasonable and the books look to be in good condition. Staff seemed chill and it sounds like they accept store credit if you have good material to give them (I have convinced myself that the bartering for property rights in material goods is for ironic purposes only). If you feel any comradeship with those with liberal arts pedigrees or are just one of those folks who needs more than potboiler books of the petit bourgeoisie, this place would be an excellent option. This is a great little bookstore that is a perfect addition to downtown! The staff is super nice, always willing to check to see if they have a book you're looking for, though they make the hunt easy with shelves being clearly labeled and the store clean and well organized. I've never left empty handed and love that they offer trade, so I can get more books! read more

Ok, let's be honest, for the people who may be from out of town like me. This is not a "used bookstore". You will not walk in and smell that wonderful scent of used paperbacks. You will not get lost in aisles and aisles of options. You will not be there very long..... What you WILL get is shiny hardwood floors and a tiny selection. Teeny boppers with multi colored bracelets and young "hipsters" who will probably vape as soon as they walk out. The "sections" barely consisted of two shelves MAX. Except of course, the young adult section which did take up most of one wall. Just wanted to put an honest review out to save some of you the trip. read more

I've only been in twice, but I now judge all other book stores by the awesomeness that is Bookmarx. This place has done a commendable job with selling used books but having a focus instead of just accepting 17 copies of Eat, Pray, Love and 9 copies of Moby Dick (irrespective of the condition) and calling it a day, like pretty much every other used bookstore I've ever been in has done. The art in the back is a nice added touch too. I love this place. read more

I just love this place! I make special trips downtown just for it. Their curated selection of used and new books is really good, unlike most other second hand book shops in Springfield; they're pretty finicky and because of that it's full of pure treasure. I think I've only left empty handed once because I didn't find something I was looking for, that's how good the collection is. They'll also buy back books, which is nice, as I'm sure there will be a few book club books I won't want to hang on to. There's also a store cat, who I've seen on occasion, and is a total sweetheart. The ambiance is open, airy, and the books are pretty well organized. If you have a hard time finding something, ask the person at the counter and if he can't directly walk to it and grab it for you, he's happy to look it up on the system. In fact, one time I was going to buy a new copy of a Sherman Alexie book and he mentioned he had a used copy if I was interested, and went and grabbed it for me when I said yes. I was not pleased with the hospitality. It was raining today so me and my friend hurried to the cookie dough store that we wanted to try that's right next to this place. As we were going in we noticed an adorable cat that was sitting in the window sill at this store and wanted to visit to pet it. Two seconds in the store I was petting the cat and I hear a stern voice saying, "we are closed now". Okay, no big deal, it can't be helped. My friend said, "sorry we were just wanting to pet the cat". He strode over briskly and as I was looking at the cat I could see him on my side not saying a word but waving his hands at us in a shooing motion like we were stray dogs looking for food. I understand closing time is closing time and people have places to be but have some decency to be a little nicer about it. We didn't know it was closing time because we didn't look at the times at the front because it was raining. Did I mention it was 7:07 and they closed at 7. If he really did not want people walking in at that time he should have locked the doors at 7. I didn't get his name either because of how fast he shooed is out.
