The author had stopped in a few days prior to sign all of the copies - a nice touch. Journals, stickers, toys, candy, and book accessories are also available to create the perfect gift. This is the best bookstore between Montréal and Watertown, a combination of a typical…read moreUniversity/College bookstore (with art supplies and other things), a gift store (in addition to the usual campus gear, there's stuff for tourists and family members), and a general reader bookstore about the size of a small old school Borders. The store itself is a must-visit just for the space: it's in an old gym that's been refurbished, leaving the gorgeous two-story space intact, with a full lower level and what might have been a track level in a square balcony on the second level. The upstairs is where you'll find all the college gear, art, and some games; down below are the gifts, textbook pickup, general bookstore, and younger kids games and activities. The staff were extremely nice and helpful, and while the prices are full retail for books and gifts, you will want to support the ability to browse by buying some stuff, we hope. A genuinely nice find in an otherwise somewhat disappointing (for books) pair of college towns in Potsdam and Canton.

Arlie's is a place I always check out when I'm in the Westport-Perth-Smith Falls area, just off the main drag in Smiths Falls. It has a terrific selection of books in a wide variety of genres - westerns, mysteries, sci-fi/fantasy, biographies, just about everything - and of course a special section on local/Ontario history. Remarkably, the store has expanded since I first visited, nearly doubling in size. I do wish that the opening hours were a little longer, but I make an effort to get there whenever I'm in the area.

Upon entering we found that this was not quite the case. There wasn't anything 5&10ish, not even a few penny/ super cheap candies for kids. This store is full of souvenirs that are pretty much the same as the other stores on the strip. Most of them are pretty cheesy but they had some decent options if you wanted a Christmas ornament or some cute lake house decor. There were plenty of t shirts, mugs, shot glasses, small items with a variety of peoples names printed on, etc. There were some items that didn't have Alexandria Bay or 1000 Islands plastered across which was good. I think the 5&10 name and sign is misleading but if you have time to kill and come and look you might find something you like.
