The store itself is a must-visit just for the space: it's in an old gym that's been refurbished, leaving the gorgeous two-story space intact, with a full lower level and what might have been a track level in a square balcony on the second level. The upstairs is where you'll find all the college gear, art, and some games; down below are the gifts, textbook pickup, general bookstore, and younger kids games and activities. The staff were extremely nice and helpful, and while the prices are full retail for books and gifts, you will want to support the ability to browse by buying some stuff, we hope. A genuinely nice find in an otherwise somewhat disappointing (for books) pair of college towns in Potsdam and Canton.

They had a table set up at the door doing "take out" service, i.e. you say what author/genre/topic you are interested in and they bring up a small pile of books for you to look at. Got a nice stack of seven or eight sci-fi novels (it would have been more, but it has to fit in my carry-on when I fly home). Nice to see a small business finding a way to operate safely even in the current circumstances.

The thing with second hand bookstores, they can either be in a state of complete chaos, where the book title you're looking for *may* be there but because nothing is organized, you may miss it altogether OR the bookstore can be so meticulously and methodically well-organized that you end up walking out with some book titles you weren't even looking for in the first place. This is what happened to me at Beazley Books located in the quaint and picturesque Pointe-Claire village. The owner was also very nice and seemed to know quite a bit about the writers I picked up. Yeah, I know it's the West Island, but the distance is a lot longer in your head than it really is. I actually timed myself and found that I was there in 30 minutes flat from Lionel Groulx metro on the weekend. It's definitely worth a visit. Arlie's is a place I always check out when I'm in the Westport-Perth-Smith Falls area, just off the main drag in Smiths Falls. It has a terrific selection of books in a wide variety of genres - westerns, mysteries, sci-fi/fantasy, biographies, just about everything - and of course a special section on local/Ontario history. Remarkably, the store has expanded since I first visited, nearly doubling in size. I do wish that the opening hours were a little longer, but I make an effort to get there whenever I'm in the area.
