It's not every day you find a place like this. Berry & Peterson is one of Kingston's "hidden gems"…read morefor book lovers. Be aware, there are books piled from floor to ceiling - literally. As a result, it's not very accessible. The floors are a mix of wood and stone and can be uneven. There's an upstairs as well. Make sure you take a look there for more recent books. If you're into collecting old books, this place is for you! The shopkeeper is very nice and knowledgeable. I think he's one of the founders although I'm not sure which one. You can find him there most days listening to the radio or reading something. The prices can be a bit high, but that's the case with most book stores these days. I'm happy to support this local business as an alternative to some of the bigger chains that we have in town. I expect that they could probably use the business as well. The store itself is a must-visit just for the space: it's in an old gym that's been refurbished, leaving the gorgeous two-story space intact, with a full lower level and what might have been a track level in a square balcony on the second level. The upstairs is where you'll find all the college gear, art, and some games; down below are the gifts, textbook pickup, general bookstore, and younger kids games and activities. The staff were extremely nice and helpful, and while the prices are full retail for books and gifts, you will want to support the ability to browse by buying some stuff, we hope. A genuinely nice find in an otherwise somewhat disappointing (for books) pair of college towns in Potsdam and Canton.

As such, it can be a bit overwhelming to browse through everything, since there's not a lot of room to move around. Regardless, if there's something you can look for, you can ask a staff member who'll probably know where it's located. It's a broad assortment of varying genres, and you might find something you didn't know you wanted. Found myself a bunch of nonfiction history books that I keep promising myself I would read. There's also a selection of books for display at the front of the store with a deal going on: usually "$5 each, 3 for $10". The only point of concern is security, as it seems fairly susceptible to theft.
