Front Porch Farm has the most beautiful produce (primarily gorgeous lettuces) and gorgeous flowers like sweet peas, roses and other really cute, out-of-the-ordinary varieties. The lettuces are always so clean and super fresh! It's like a treasured find! Kalee, the farmers market manager, is so friendly and knowledgeable. I love chatting with her as we select from the week's treasures. Earlier this season, I picked up some tomato plants also in interesting varieties such as Pink Boar and Mountain Magic. I have to say the last owner wasn't particularly nice - the new owners are quite welcoming. There's a huge selection of variety of Rhododendrum's, Japanese maples, Dahlia's and Clivia's with huge redwoods surrounding. The grounds are gorgeous as ever with lovely shaded paths throughout. A new addition is the small shop with soaps and lotions made from herbs. Additionally, we were told by one of the new owners that they know offer event space for weddings. There is no charge to park or to enter the nursery. It seemed like the prices were a bit higher, but for a specialty plant it would be worth it.

I was very excited to go for a visit and a couple weeks ago I had the chance to get over there. It was the end of August and I was hoping to go home with some plants to perk up a part of my garden and maybe make this part of my regular "going to the nursery to buy plants" rotation. Unfortunately, after perusing all the plants in the section adjacent to the parking lot (the first plants you see when walking in the nursery) and the tables heading down the path, I found them to all be in absolutely terrible shape (some barely alive) and when I finally saw how much they were trying to charge for them, I was really dumbfounded. The place looked disheveled and not well kept up. If they were healthy plants, I think I would have continued exploring the other sections and I could try to justify the price. Note: the prices I saw for 1 gallon "basic" plants are higher than any other nursery I have been to in Petaluma or Sebastopol. My guess is that the owner is overwhelmed and really needs help. It's a large space with sections that I never even had a chance to get to. Not really sure where to go. Nothing is well marked. I only saw one woman working there (owner? seemed like it) near the check out area. She was chatting with a friend the entire time while I stood there waiting to ask some questions about how things were laid out and prices (to see if I was wrong about things). I had been hovering for some time and when her friend finally left, she then walked away. Odd. And that's when I just left because she didn't seem interested in selling plants. First impressions count and this left me deflated. There is a lovely place to go for a walk so if that's what you're looking for, you'll love it.

Raspberries are quite easy to pick which makes it accessible for people of all ages to participate, which was great. I'd bring a picnic and drinks. There are plenty of tables in the shade and sun. We were having such a lovely time picnicking after picking that we didn't even notice they'd been closed for half an hour! They were welcoming and didn't say a thing. Very thoughtful and family-friendly people. I'd definitely come back. While there are only raspberries at this farm, they're so good that it's worth coming for that one beautiful fruit.

The prices are $12 a pound, which seem fair considering you're paying $7-8 for a small 6 oz pack in the grocery store. Plus, you can't beat picking them fresh. There's a pond and picnic area to enjoy your fresh picked raspberries or a packed lunch, if you want to make an afternoon out of it. Not a lot of shade on the property, so if you go on a hot day be prepared with water at hats.

We picked two kinds of apples to make an apple pie and they just melted in our mouths with the most beautiful texture when we ate them. The staff offered tables and chairs in the shade and cups of water to my parents which was kind. My fingers were stained with blackberry juice and they had two sinks with liquid soap outside which was so thoughtful, much better than the hand sanitizer for guests at most farms. The Asian Pears we purchased on the way out were potent with honey notes and I loved how there were three varieties to choose from -- we got all three -- each so different from one another. I'd love to return during permission and guava season! I could feel the intentions here, and it made the "U-Pick" experience far more than that. It's 3 acres and has tons of trees, foliage, flowers, ponds, benches, and bridges. It feels like someone's large extended backyard. It's only open on the weekends 10-4. There were many flowers that I'd didn't recognize but some I knew were Water Lilies, Lily of the Nile, English Ivy, Bamboo, and wild raspberries. It's mostly if not all shaded, which is a great idea to do on a hot summer day.
