Surrounded by hundreds of pots of assorted peppers Kevin McEnnis speaks fondly about his produce,…read moreand he displays an unmistakable passion in describing his New Mexican chiles and his Poblano chile peppers. He should. For these, his mixed sweet peppers and his Early Girl tomatoes are the crops that his Quetzal Farm are best known for. Kevin and his business partner, Keith Abeles, operate the 10 acre farm in Santa Rosa, and they recently took time out from their busy weekend schedules to offer our Berkeley-based group a tour of their farm. Kevin started the farm in 1999 and his farm has been certified organic since 2002. Kevin tells us he named the farm after the national bird of Guatemala for it was there where he planted his first farm. He is the core farmer at this site while Keith promotes sales and administrative duties. The location of the farm is key to the produce harvested here. Here they have the intense Santa Rosa heat coupled with a prominent marine layer to successfully produce warm weather crops such as tomatoes side by side with cold weather crops such as lettuce. Kevin tells us the unique weather helps his produce to mature slowly creating a more vibrant flavor. We took a walking tour into one of their greenhouses, and as soon as we entered the enclosure we noticed it was like walking into a sauna. Inside the greenhouse our group marveled at the specialty herbs, brightly colored radishes and a field full of green garlic with many of us stopping to take a photo or two. Two dozen in my case! Back outside Kevin described in detail some of their sustainable farming techniques and showed us why they use raised soil beds to take advantage of the unique climate and better drainage. Like many organic farms they create their own compost here and the farm grows cover crops to protect their soil as good soil is a vital part to any successful farm. While the farm is well known for only specific types of produce Keith told us that their recent trials with lemon cucumbers and English cucumbers have done exceptionally well. In addition the farm dries their own chiles and sells these and freshly made salsas at local farmers markets. Following our tour Kevin and Keith led us into the barn, broke out some tortilla chips and allowed our group to sample some of their tasty salsas. I loved both their Chipotle Salsa and Hot Salsa so much I purchased a pint of each along with some super fresh produce that was picked for our group that morning. Produce from Quetzal Farm can be found locally at the Thursday Berkeley Farmer's Market, the Saturday Berkeley Farmer's Market and the Sunday Marin Farmer's Market. In addition, their dried chiles are sold at Bi-Rite Market in San Francisco, Rockridge Market Hall in Oakland, the Santa Rosa Community Market and selected Whole Foods markets in the North Bay.

This is an awesome farmers' market on hwy 116. Produce looked so good, they looked unreal. The place looked so colorful and picturesque, like a movie set. Only sorry we didn't buy more fruit. Great quality and prices seemed fair. The plums and nectarines were not mealy like some grocery store fruit. They were sweet, juicy, and crisp. They didn't last 1 meal. They were devoured that night as dessert after dinner. We also got some yummy chocolate covered caramels and espresso beans. The freeze dried veggie chips were crisp and not stale at all. As other posts have made note of, this is for the BBQ and not the actual market…read more Got a tri tip sandwich and pork rib plate. The tri tip tasted like it was cooked in the microwave - absolutely zero char and the meat was a pale gray color. If I didn't order tri-tip, I would have thought it was diced pork loin cooked in a strange tomato sauce, thrown onto a dry roll. The sandwich was slightly under room temp to the touch The plate was unfortunately not better. The pork ribs as described before me also had 0 char and were covered in a dry (?) rub with the consistency of damp bread crumbs. The taste was okay, but the execution just so not hitting the mark. Beans tasted like they were simmered in tomato paste, and the Mac n cheese had split and it was mostly grease on top of a strange cheese/macaroni conglomerate. The cornbread tasted like corn tortillas that had sat in a moist prep container for hours on end -bland, slightly musty, and also mushy. Andy's is an awesome market but boy oh boy is this BBQ stand not it. Maybe it was super good at one time but what I experienced is not something I would have eaten for free, yet alone the $40ish I spent to toss into the trash shorty after. The guy working the stand was nice and friendly at least. But please do better or don't at all, it's not fair to charge this much for food this low of quality.

Our family has been frequenting Charter Family Farm fruit stand every season for as long as I can…read moreremember. We always enjoy the stone fruits, different varieties of watermelon, corn, etc. However since it has transitioned to The Harvest Bend, the soul of the place isn't quite there any more. No longer are we greeted by familiar faces stocking peppers and tomatoes in the outside bins, rather those bins are generally empty and unwelcoming... the watermelons and corn that were always stocked in the entrance have been empty or sold out some days, as the volume of stock was seemingly not ready to out out (leaving gaps in availability that were not there before)... the prices seem to have gone up and additions of overpriced pies, popcorn, and soaps from outside the immediate area make it seem more like a new generation boutique rather than a reliable family farm stand. Most recently, at the farm stand we were buying about 10 pounds of stone fruit, assorted veggies, 24 ears of corn and 4 yellow watermelons. And as we have always done in the past, we simply informed the team member at the counter that we would also be grabbing four watermelons on our way out, as our hands were full with the rest of the produce. She informed us she couldn't ring them up until we brought them in because different sizes were different prices, despite their own signage saying they were one flat price ($7 per yellow watermelon) - almost as if we were going to steal them - because when we came back in (after holding up the line to quickly grab them), they were in fact all the same price after all (no difference based on size - just a flat price). I don't know, but this place has lost its soul, is overpriced, and is seemingly more focused on branding, buzz, and social reach/engagement rather than what matters to its patrons.
