Those who know me know I'm no fan of chain restaurants in general, and fast-food chains in particular. Sometimes I make an exception, and BonChon chicken is one of them.
THE ROSES: Korean fried chicken is rather unique. Using cornstarch and self-rising flour in the breading gives you a very light, crunchy crust. Drizzled with your choice of toppings (I chose honey citrus), it is quite good, but as Yelper Michael F. pointed out, the meat itself is a bit bland (brining the bird or marinating could go a long way here). Other Korean dishes are nicely interpreted here as well; the chapchae and the bibimbap bowls are quite good. There are some really bizarro snack items that really grow on you (like the 'Krazy Ko-Dog' with bacon and kimchee!). They have a dessert called Bingsu that is also definitely worth the price of admission. It's like a sundae sitting on a bed of refreshing shave ice; definitely worth a look.
THE THORNS: Service on some items can be slow. They are painstaking to a fault making the Bingsu, acting like it's brain surgery. If you ask for it dessert to be delivered later, you have to remind them, or you'll be in for a long wait.
THE VERDICT: While Jollibee has nothing to worry about, the food at BonChon is definitely worth a look. I recommend this restaurant. read more
