    Dirty Rice Plate
    Joey R.

When I went to Hole in the Wall at Century Mall, all my friends were raving about Bad Bird. They said it was the best fried chicken EVERRR~~~ Of course, it was the first thing I had to try. It was the only stall with the longest line (it was lunch time) and everyone held a tray of Umami Chicken. So, I decided to get the classic chicken and waffles plate. The sad part was that, after a good 30 minutes in line, they ran out of waffles. I settled for Chemical Chicken with Dirty Rice. After another 10 minutes, I was so ready to sink my teeth into some juicy fried chicken! So, how did it go? Well, the chicken was tasty, the breading had tons of spices and seasonings. But, I had the Chemical Chicken and it wasn't as spicy as I thought it would be. Also, the chicken meat was a bit dry and, in my opinion, bland. :( The Dirty rice was so-so. Nothing spectacular to report about it. Basically, I was not sold on the whole chicken experience. I don't understand why people would line up for it. I'm not saying it tasted bad, it was tasty. But, I have honestly had better fried chicken at a more affordable price.

Finally got to head to Hole in the Wall. Went to split Bad Bird's Waffle Plate w/ @chefcancio; since we're doing it food hall style. Felt a bit like APD. Nice atmosphere for sure; although, its expensive for the portion. Good to try different things with friends and fam for sure. Meanwhile, I'm still in the search for the best Chicken Waffles in town. Bad Bird's waffle came short. I think they weren't prepped fresh and was left airing out for the next customer ("makunat"). I felt Pancake House's waffles were better, and crispier. The chicken though was good. We added some spice to it. That was a good call. I think if Pancake House was near, I'd grab their waffles and pair it up with Bad Bird's chicken haha I'm taking out a star for the Waffles. Sad. I know they can do better. * * * Also, got Garde Manger's Okayama (Japanese Peach Lemonade). That was pretty good paired up with the chicken's spicy kick

Bad Bird was Very Good. Party of four ordered the spicy-mid level hot & crispy fried chicken. Sheer bliss & crickets, not a peep from any of us since we went in on this meal. Sides: -corn with flaky cheese = superb -slaw = yummy -fried rice (you're in the Philippines, of course there's rice) = perfect pairing with the chicken The chicken is the star and it won't let you forget it. Be bad and get some Bad Bird when you're in Makati.

Sweet potato waffles and chicken plate (that miso butter was the bombdiggity!!)

Bad bird to me is not just another chicken and waffle place. Hello! Yup, you read that one right. At first, I thought that it was JUST another waffle joint serving same ol' waffles; nothing special. But no - I was hella wrong. I thought it was the same flour and eggs kinda mix but when I was told that the main ingredient was sweet potato, I was (at first) confused and curious on how it'll taste like. I ordered the basic chicken plate (chicken and waffles) - plating wise, it looks like the typical fast food. 2 pieces of waffles, 2 pieces of chicken and a dollop of what I thought was plain butter (but no! It was 'Miso butter'). After the first bite, I was like 'something's different with this. The waffle was hearty and mildly savory with the miso butter (heavenly!), and the umami chicken was crunchy on the outside but soft, juicy and tender on the inside. I don't eat as much so I shared my plate with my boyfriend, and the serving was substantially filing. Belly satisfied, Akemi approves!

    Yumami goodness!

Located in Hole In The Wall, Century Mall, this stall serves fried chicken which are perfectly deep-fried and coated in their special umami spices with different spiciness levels (safe, spicy or chemical for the adventurous ones!). The uncanny pairing of spiced western style fried chicken with Asian-inspired side dishes works so well that you'll surely come back for more. My personal favorites are their Kimchi coleslaw, corn with Japanese Kewpie may and bonito flakes and their dirty rice! You have to be hungry when you decide to eat here as their servings are huge! Each order comes with 2 massive spiced chicken with a choice of 2 sides, with the option of ordering additional sides if you want to try everything! I highly recommend this place. The staff were helpful and accommodating as well. Just be prepared to line up especially during lunch hours or dinner as the line can get pretty long.

These bad boys will burn off your taste buds and you won't even regret it.

Bad Bird is about the only stall whose lines always snake around their stall. Always. I don't think I've ever seen Bad Bird without a line, and that's saying something, as I've been to Hole in the Wall quite a number of times, with it just walking distance from my home. It might have something to do with Bad Bird's glory of having one of the best, tastiest chicken, who's absolutely upfront about their usage of MSG. And partly because a lot of Pinoys have FOMO (fear of missing out), and whenever we see a line, we want to know just what the buzz is all about. While Bad Bird's famous umami chicken is indeed very good, I think that there are times where it's just too flavorful-- to the point that I can't take it anymore, because it's too damned salty, or someone was heavy handed in tossing it with the togarashi and other spices they use. I rather like their Japanese fried rice as an accompaniment, a nice counterbalance to the overly umami chicken. Their bonito corn sticks are also good, but most of the time, their corn is too tough to enjoy fully. While people may think that the sweet potato waffles can act as a good pair with the chicken, I sometimes find it too chewy (floppy?) or sometimes too hard to ever like it properly. Though, I do enjoy the maple butter and syrup that they have with the waffles, and slather those on the chicken instead. Is it worth waiting in line? I guess, yeah, if you want to try really crunchy, really savoury chicken. But it's the type of meal that you can't have very often, because the flavour is too strong, and becomes cloying after a while.

I tried one breast with chemical level spice (hottest). Wow it was tremendously good. Dried spice. I'll be back.

I now understand the long lines round the clock at BB. It's not just because fried chicken could pass as the second national dish of the Philippines... But it's amazingly tasty from the unique spice blend versus all the crisp cuts available. I handle spicy food really, really well and find their fried chicken in Chemical manageable but comes to a point my ears zing from the heat. Nicely paired with their equally good dirty rice. It's so loaded and bonito flakes give that Asian punch. Overall the elements make for a great plate in flavor and photos!

This bad bird is pretty damn good.

Bad Bird is umami goodness in every bite. I got their Corn and Coleslaw Plate. This comes with two generous pieces of umami fried chicken, corn on a stick with kewpie, cheese, bonito flakes, and some coleslaw on the side. You can add a few pesos for some hush puppies and you can choose how spicy you want your chicken. They have three levels of spicy which are safe, spicy, and toxic if I'm not mistaken. Each level of spicy has a different taste because I think they use different spices depending on the level of spicy you choose. I was quite skeptical at first on what people were saying about this place, but damn, I need more. Skip all the other brands of fried chicken for a while and try out Bad Bird. It's pretty damn good - everything from the corn, to the hush puppies, and the umami fried chicken. You know when you take a bite and then your eyes become big and pop out and then you kind of shake your head slowly in disbelief in a good way and then release a deep sigh of satisfaction? You'll kind of do that when you eat some of this Bad Bird.

Southern meets Asian, that's what you get when you order the Umami Chicken from Bad Bird. This restaurant takes a modern twist on Chicken and Waffles. Don't expect to get the butter and creamy batter you get from Southern Chicken. Umami Chicken is totally something else - it's very good, but in a different way. It's very addicting if you're into salty goodness. There are three kinds of flavors you can choose from - I personally like the original one because I find the Spicy (mild spicy one) already too spicy. Others like ordering the dirty plate (the dish with rice) but for me what better way to eat fried chicken than with waffles, corn on the cub, and potato balls! I often drool when I see Bad Bird photos, I think it's because I like anything salty and sweet at the same time.

Finding a seat is also not a problem as the dining area is huge and there are plenty of tables and chairs. I liked Wingstop even before I tasted their food. The reason: Their food choices are few. You'll not be overwhelmed by different options or types of food. Their menu revolves around chicken wings. Since their Makati branch is fairly new, I imagined that customers would take a long time to decide what to order. But it didn't take long for the people ahead of me to finish their transactions at the counter. It could be that everyone had already tried Wingstop and knew what to eat or it could be that 7:00pm is not a good time to eat wings (are you kidding me?). Since I was on my way home, I decided to have my orders in a takeaway bag. I simply wanted to sample their wings so I got a 7-piece order of wings with two flavors - Garlic Parmesan and Louisiana Rub. Both taste great but I liked the Louisiana Rub better because of its sweet and mild spicy flavor.

I consider Buffalo wings to be one of my favorite foods, so when someone declares this place to be one of the best wings in town, I had to find out for myself. Frankie's set-up is like the typical wings diner: homey and pleasantly cluttered. I had the garlic parmesan as recommended by the waiter, and the Frankie's Classic Buffalo. As it was the one flavor that took the restaurant's name as its title, the Frankie's classic was definitely the better order of the two. Everything I've been hearing about the place was right; this might be the best Buffalo wings place in the city! The Frankie's classic is a masterpiece, I don't know how many kinds of Buffalo wings I've tried in my life, but this time I think I've found the perfect original no frills wings.

Going further, some places would inevitably prepare the dish better than most. To me, this is Frankie's New York Buffalo Wings. I usually head to Frankie's after a night run. This could get as late as midnight. The place is open until 2 am, and by this time the horrible parking situation at the City Golf Compound would already be more manageable. (Of course, provided it's a not a weekend.) I always get the Classic Buffalo (spicy) with blue cheese dip, and ask for more blue cheese dips. (They charge extra). I like the chicken because of the way the skin has been cooked to a crisp, all the while keeping the meat rather tender; I think it's breaded. The sauce is spicy yet with just the right bite, meaning there is a dimension to the flavor and not just plain crazy-fiery. Like, I can still taste the butter and the vinegar all coming nicely together with the one-two punch of the hot sauce. Oh-yeah! The best part is you don't even have to worry about getting your hands dirty because they give away disposable gloves. To be honest, I don't really use it since I am used to working with utensils in dissecting my chicken, but I just think it's rather thoughtful of them. As my personal motto goes: it's the useless stuff that builds character.

Their house-brewed iced tea is so good that you'd really wonder why it's got a head of froth floating in the glass. Service is quick, and the servers are polite and friendly. I'm also recommending their chicken tandoori meal with iced tea. Don't forget to ask for promos every month. Sometimes they put up value meals which are really good value for money.
