This might be the best black history tour l've ever taken in any city! Mr. Johnnie Brown was an amazing host and the level of knowledge that he has is incredible. At one point, I kept checking his hands while he was talking to see if he was reading off his phone but no, he had TONS of facts and details committed to memory which tells me that he does this often and loves what he does! We also saw people greeting him around the city as we went through the tour, which tells me he is a well known and respected member of the community. As for the tour itself, it started on time and there was plenty of parking for us to safely leave our car at the Savannah Visitor's Center. We boarded the comfortable bus and spent two hours learning more about Savannah's history of black people (and even Haitian people- which is great because my husband is Haitian) than l'd ever learned before! We also got to tour some pretty amazing sites like The First African Baptist Church and the Beach Institute. I would 1000% recommend this tour! Thank you, Mr Johnnie Brown.

The tour is offered several times a day. You select the day and time in advance with your reservation. It lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes or so. Your pick up/departure point is from the Sugar Shack. There's convenient free parking in the gravel lot next to the building. Jac (Jacqueline) was our tour guide and she is a well qualified history educator and member of the local historical society. She uses a microphone and can be heard by anywhere in the open air tram. And you can easily ask any questions you may have. We learned a lot about Tybee island's history. And explored the north side of the island -- the "historic" portion. Many of the former Fort's walled batteries and buildings are now residential homes, vacation rentals, and businesses. There were a number of stops enroute and times where we could get off the tram and stretch. Plus she took photos of us when we stopped by the lighthouse (the tallest in Georgia). This is not your typical sight seeing tour. But an educational overview offering a timeline of the development -- residential and touristic -- of the island. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Our tour guide "Jac" was entertaining and most knowledgeable in the local culture, past and present. Jac is a history professor and member of the Tybee Historical Society. The tour traces the military history and presence as well as many homes being established in what was once military batteries and barracks. Pirate lore is a feature with historical contributions to the island. If you arrrrrr looking for a great time and learning about this island, give Jac (Jacqueline) a call!
