And for dessert I had a piece of pear & almond tart - vegan and gluten free. It was all very good. My friend had a chickpea tajine that was a little spicy and served with couscous. It's more of a cafeteria than a restaurant but that's ok. But the food is after all just nice and nothing one couldn't make at home. It might deserve four stars for veggie-deprived France but for more vegetarian-friendly countries (i.e. anywhere but France) it's a bit disappointing, it misses the twist and some innovation. The prices range from around ten Euros for a big salad to nineteen for a set menu that includes starter, main and dessert, which I find a bit steep for what you get. So like my star dilemma, not sure if I'll go back despite everything that it has going for it.

Live and learn, when you are on a super restrictive diet reservations are a must...went walking up the cathedral back down and then back up the hill to find a place to eat. Our first choice was full so we ended up eating here, which is rated top 10 restaurant in Lyon. By the time we got there it was 20:00 ish (15km of walking uphill later) we were jet lagged, tired and starved! The food was delicious but you can't be starving or in a rush...the portions are on the smaller side of things especially if it's your only meal of the day. I would recommend it but next time I'll make reservations for my number one choice i didn't get the chance to try.

The Vegetarian Food We've Had in France!…read more Well, we've only found one other place that was exclusively vegetarian. Nonetheless, the food was excellent! It looks like the menu changes regularly, so I'm not sure how helpful this will be. We each had the Minestrone soup, which was fabulous! It was a different take on what we expected, but we enjoyed it anyway! For plats we had the Buckwheat Gallette and the Assiette Gourmande. What that really means (in American food terms) is that the Gallette is kind of a savory thick patty made of vegetables and buckwheat on a bed of red cabbage and spinach in a savory asian influenced sauce. The gourmet plate was a large salad with various raw vegetables and sprouts under a delicious dressing (not too heavy); in the corner there was marinaded tofu dice and a side of french quinoa with a savory broth. Everything was very original and tasty! The clientele appeared to be mostly french hippies! The dining area is middle sized, probably seats a total of 30. Don't forget they are only do dinner on Friday and Saturday nights.

Everyone who has ever reviewed this place for Yelp has given the place five stars…read more I am giving the place five stars. Do you see a trend here? * * * Like an Elephant is an insanely good vegan restaurant. There are vegan cartoons all over the restaurant. The print is fine so it takes some examination to see them all and get all the jokes. The place is very small making this a tough reservation to get. The menu is even smaller. Three choices of entree. Three choices of main course - one of which is always a vegan burger. Two choices of dessert. You frankly won't need anything else in this world. * * * A staple of Jewish vegetable cooking is a tsimmes. This is a stewed dish with carrots, apricots and lots of other orange fruits and vegetables. Like an Elephant turns this concept into a soup. Carrot veloute with apricots and subtle spices. Never have I been so in love with a carrot. Although frankly, the apricots were doing a whole lot of the talking. * * * My lovely wife had the mushroom risotto with lemon. She was head over heels in love. I had the vegan burger of the day. The burger was insanely good. Zucchini has never been put to better use. But the strange magic of the dish was their alternative to French Fries. These were plain ordinary potato wedges sauteed in olive oil, and vegan butter The same "home fries" concept you would get at an Alabama diner. But when the olive oil is really really good, and the vegan butter is better than butter from a cow ... And the potatoes have lots and lots and lots of olive oil and vegan butter ... Now you are looking at pure and unadulterated decadence. Veggie burger plates are usually just okay. This was the veggie burger and fries of midnight dreams. * * * Desserts were variations on a theme of panna cotta. It however was not the spartan desserts of good-for-you vegetables-are-for-suffering pious-vegan restaurants. These were sensuous and pleasant. But I was like a man who had found true love-making happiness And was out-like-a-light in a deep post-romantic slumber. The dessert was there, but I barely remember it * * * Magical Burger Magical Fries Magical Burger Magical Fries. And every single one of them was a healthy vegetable.

The staff was super friendly and spoke English since we only know the basics in French so that was nice. The food is ready super fast and it's amazing. For under 10€ per person, you can get a pretty filling meal. You have a choice of a sandwich (i.e. falafels in a pita pocket) or a salad (this will cost just a tiny bit more). My husband got the sandwich and I got the salad - I have to admit I had a little bit of food envy as they were starting to make his sandwich and stuff it, and my salad looked like just a lot of cabbage and carrots. Both were really excellent, the falafels were fresh, tasty, and not dry, and despite my initial first impression, I actually liked the salad more than the sandwich. The salad does come with two little pita breads so you can still feel like you're eating a pita sandwich without all of the carbs and with more vegetables. I would definitely get the salad again, but you can't go wrong with either. Overall, inexpensive, fast, fresh and tasty and a nice way to get something a little healthier (especially if you get the salad) if you're tired of heavier Lyonnaise food. They open pretty late and on Sundays too. I would come back here again if I were in the area.

With the exception of another couple and their dog, our family of four were seated in area separate from the main dining room, next to the bathroom, isolated from the open kitchen and other diners. A note to future diners: make sure and request a table in the main dining room. Food-4: with the exception of the pigeon, the fish , vegetable, and dessert courses were well presented with delicate flavors that leaned toward the floral and fruity. Meal and wine pairings were good but not revelatory. We expected more from a Michelin starred restaurant. Service-3: uneven, one of our junior sommeliers was excellent and she really made our experience better whereas the head waiter provided perfunctory service. Overall-3: Without the actual "immersive" experience and "unique setting", the food and service alone was not enough for this dinner to be memorable.

The coffees were perfect as we had some hit and miss during our stay overall in finding high quality, robust, coffee (which was not espresso). The hot chocolate is the real deal, rich chocolate that you add hot milk to to reduce the thick, creamy richness of it. So good. order it! I think they are known for their pastries so order a few brioche, rolls, etc. I wish I knew the french word for the roll we had as that was one of the best we've ever had.. sweet, but not too sweet, soft/airy, buttery with the outside having a nice crispy (flakey) texture. So good. Very affordable too. Wish we found this place earlier during the visit as I would have liked to come back a few times.
