I found this while searching for a restaurant with good vegetarian options in the Croix Rousse…read moreneighborhood of Lyon. We were very pleased with the atmosphere and the food! We couldn't read anything on the menu (which was a chalkboard that they brought around) but an English speaking waitress talked us through it. I had what she called "the menu where you don't choose anything" which was a selection of all the vegetarian options they had that day (eight in total including Soup, Quiche, Couscous, a number of salads, hummus, cheese and others) and a dessert sampler plate of the four desserts that day. My meat-eating companion asked the waitress to bring him her favorite things had an appetizer of cheese toast with caramelized onion and herb spread and a roast chicken in sauce with rice for the entree. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. One note, my companion did not order a dessert and, therefore, did not get the menu/deal, so his food ended up being about 8 euros more than it would have been had he gotten the dessert. So be careful to order one of the actual menu options, not just a la carte. (This is good advice in France generally as everywhere has the "Menu" multicourse option that gets you the best price).

The Vegetarian Food We've Had in France!…read more Well, we've only found one other place that was exclusively vegetarian. Nonetheless, the food was excellent! It looks like the menu changes regularly, so I'm not sure how helpful this will be. We each had the Minestrone soup, which was fabulous! It was a different take on what we expected, but we enjoyed it anyway! For plats we had the Buckwheat Gallette and the Assiette Gourmande. What that really means (in American food terms) is that the Gallette is kind of a savory thick patty made of vegetables and buckwheat on a bed of red cabbage and spinach in a savory asian influenced sauce. The gourmet plate was a large salad with various raw vegetables and sprouts under a delicious dressing (not too heavy); in the corner there was marinaded tofu dice and a side of french quinoa with a savory broth. Everything was very original and tasty! The clientele appeared to be mostly french hippies! The dining area is middle sized, probably seats a total of 30. Don't forget they are only do dinner on Friday and Saturday nights.

Our first choice was full so we ended up eating here, which is rated top 10 restaurant in Lyon. By the time we got there it was 20:00 ish (15km of walking uphill later) we were jet lagged, tired and starved! The food was delicious but you can't be starving or in a rush...the portions are on the smaller side of things especially if it's your only meal of the day. I would recommend it but next time I'll make reservations for my number one choice i didn't get the chance to try.

Mine consisted of greens, radicchio, carrots, green beans, asparagus, tomatoes, scallions, chives, and something I couldn't identify that was flat, white, round, kind of tasted like water chestnuts, and had the consistency of a firm mozarella. (Anyone know what this is? Please enlighten me!) I would have asked but the waitstaff seemed a bit busy... Which brings me to the downsides. My husband and I had intended to sup at another restaurant that ended up being closed for congé annuel. We crossed the river, got caught in a rainstorm, and took refuge under an awning. When I realized we were close to Le Jardin de Berthe (which I keep hearing rave reviews about from vegans on facebook), I suggested we try it. We rolled in (literally - we were pushing a stroller), half-dripping wet and looking a bit confused at the layout of what I thought was going to be a casual cafe. The waitress who approached us asked if we had a reservation. (Oops, no we did not.) After some logistical discussion between three of the staff, they decided they could seat us. (Hooray!) Our waiter (thankfully not the girl, who was visibly frustrated that we A) did not have a reservation and B) were obviously not native French speakers) helped me carry the stroller down some steep steps and showed us to a table for two. It was against the wall and the only place to put the stroller was directly in front of the table, blocking the waiter from getting very close. I didn't see any highchairs and we weren't offered one so maybe this isn't the best place for kids. The waiter was nice enough but obviously in a bit of a hurry so we felt rushed. I don't know if it was because we had a baby in a stroller, because we didn't have a reservation, or both. (Or maybe it was just the self-consciousness of new parents adjusting to eating with a baby who makes noise? Lots of variables.) Anywho, I ordered the salad and my husband ordered a ravioli dish with cream and bacon and - seriously - a quarter of a wheel of what we think was reblochon. He couldn't finish his either because it was so heavy but he enjoyed it! The rest of the vegetarian menu was not very impressive but I suppose the fact that they have a vegetarian menu at all should impress me. (And it does!) Other options were the ravioli dish sans bacon, a soy "steak", and a veggie burger (which sounded like the soy "steak" on a bun with some veggies.) I definitely recommend the salad, as the vegetables were high quality, in season, and super tasty. The dressing was good too - not the usual yellow French dressing but something a little fancier. (It definitely included mustard though, as usual.) We'll probably go back (with a reservation) and give the waitstaff and the other items on the menu a second chance. I'll update my review then.

This place is redefining what the term "salad" means…read more Possibly the largest salads I've ever had in my life. They're seriously the size of a small child. The vegetarian salad is delicious - lots of beets, asparagus, hearts of palm, carrots (done in that oh-so-delicious French style that I can never seem to replicate), and about every other kind of veggie you can imagine. Okay, this one actually is kind of salad-like. The ravioli salads, on the other hand, are just intense. Delicious, but crazy. Don't get one of those thinking you're being healthy...it just ain't happening. That being said, the salade sicilienne is freakin yummy. Ravioli, tomato sauce, bacon, AND a poached egg all on top of a huge salad. Yes, please! About 10 euros each, maybe a little more. I know it seems pricey for some greens, but these are worth it for sure. Go for lunch + go early - it gets super crowded, especially at dinner.

I only had a taste but it certainly left me wanting more. I really like that this place exists and is so close to my house. I do wish they were open for evenings and weekends though. It's more of a cafeteria than a restaurant but that's ok. But the food is after all just nice and nothing one couldn't make at home. It might deserve four stars for veggie-deprived France but for more vegetarian-friendly countries (i.e. anywhere but France) it's a bit disappointing, it misses the twist and some innovation. The prices range from around ten Euros for a big salad to nineteen for a set menu that includes starter, main and dessert, which I find a bit steep for what you get. So like my star dilemma, not sure if I'll go back despite everything that it has going for it.
