    Hardywood Brewery
    J David H.

I love to try new food trucks, so when I was at Hardywood over the weekend and saw Boka I was all about it. Looking over the possibilities on the menu I asked owner Matt what he would choose if not overly hungry. He pointed out the brisket. So what not and put in my order and name. Price was fair, but cannot recall exact amount. The truck had a sweet built in business of craft beer enthusiast like myself. So there was always some sort of line when I was there. Around 10 minutes later it was order up. Visually it was not what I expected to see on a paper plate. It was flat and looked like a tortilla. I took it back to a table inside the new tap room to get another beer. I asked for some napkins which they did have behind the bar, funny that they were from "Mellow Mushroom". Since I would be eating with my hands, maybe they had a fork, I don't know but was not going back out. I rolled it up and the first taste knocked my socks off. Lots of great flavors going on and who cares if it was messy, not me. I heard from a regular that they had shrimp and grits today and that was a specialty they don't always carry. This person said that this truck rotates into Hardywood with some frequency and it is well received. I would love to find them again if in Richmond. Food trucks are here to stay and I for one will continue my quest to try as many as I can around the country.

The first signs of Spring... the food trucks come back out! And this one is worth following.

When moving from Durham, I thought I would never find a food truck as awesome as KoKyu (Korean BBQ takos and sliders and more), but Boka is pretty dog-gone close. I have tried all of their offerings and have enjoyed each and every tako. I only wish I was a bit closer to their downtown space during the week. But now the Boka Katina has opened up near my home, I look forward to enjoying more Boka in the future. Now if we can just get Boka to do tater tots fried in duck fat and finished off with rosemary and sea salt (KoKyu special), I would be in heaven.

The Gauntlet! A sampling of each of the types of meats and styles. $8 and a delicious lunch!

Being a fan of street tacos as well as Boka Kantina's physical location, I was more stoked than a fire when I found out that one of the Boka trucks parks right outside the building I work. Win. --Food: I have been to the tako truck twice and the physical location at least a few times, and every time I've gotten the Gauntlet. The Gauntlet is essentially each of their main proteins (beef, chicken, and pork) in each of their respective styles (Asian, Mexican, and American). If you get them outside of the gauntlet, you can mix any protein with any style. They're not traditional tacos, but instead taco fusion, giving birth to their naming convention of "tako". Taken from my previous review, here are what each of them are: ___ Asian Style Bulgogi Beef Tako: Bulgogi beef served with kimchi (Korean cabbage), sesame aioli, and sesame seeds. It's a whole lot of asian flavors yet they work fairly well in taco form. When you eat it you might not know exactly what flavors you're experiencing, but it does capture the "Asian" palette. American Style Samabal Pork Tako: Seasoned pork with a smokey BBQ sauce, a sherry cole slaw, caramelized onions, and a six cheese blend. I'm not a huge cole slaw fan but it's not overwhelming. Additionally, I didn't get an overly cheesy taste either. What I did get was a delicious pork taco with a nice BBQ flavor and some small accompanying tastes that made for an all around awesome taco. Mexican Style Grilled Chicken Tako: Grilled chicken with a habanero lime vinaigrette, chipotle crema, and a cheese blend. The chipotle crema had a nice thick but not heavy consistency and was quite palatable. The habanero lime was a bit masked by it, but you could get a bit of it in certain bites. Having actual Mexican style taquerias around (Habanero's and La Cabana), it doesn't have that overly Mexican taste, but I'm not sure it's supposed to be straight up Mexican as this is a Fusion restaurant after all. ___ They have some specialty tacos that aren't the above, but I haven't tried them just because they're more expensive. I do want to try some of the ones like Shrimp and Grits and their seasonal meats. --Cost: $8 for the Gauntlet of 3 tacos. Their takos are very filled with meat and I never go hungry after eating three. --Service: The guys that run the truck seem like pretty chill people and I've never gotten any bad vibes from them before. Service speed is quick and I don't think I've had to wait more than 4 minutes or so for my takos. --Atmosphere: One of their trucks is parked at 9th and Main, which is right by where I work. They park up on the sidewalk. The area is currently under a lot of construction, but it's not their fault. On a side note, their official website lists where the different Boka Trucks will be at any given time, so check it out! --Overall: I really like the Boka Truck. For about as much money as Wendy's or Arby's, you can get some innovative and delicious takos. I suppose ultimately I still prefer meat, onion, and cilantro street tacos, but if the above flavor profiles sound tasty to you, stop on by!

Fish tacos and pork kimchi quesadilla

The food truck came to my workplace today! The pork kimchi quesadilla was so good and really spicy! I loved the flavors! The fish taco was good but I didn't particularly like the corn tortilla Bc it didn't seem steamed or grilled but I could be wrong it sat a bit before we had time to eat! Either way the flavor profiles were very unique and would absolutely order from them again!

"The Gauntlet" - 1 pork taco American style, 1 beef Asian style, 1 chicken Mexican style (counter clockwise)
    Bridget H.

Friendly, fast service. I had "The Gauntlet" - 1 pork taco American style, 1 beef Asian style, 1 chicken Mexican style. The Asian style was definitely to spicy for me, the American style was my favorite. RVA has a great taco scene- and Boka is definitely up there! I definitely want to try more of their options, but if you want to try a variety- the Gauntlet is the way to go.

    Brisket, tuna, fish tacos

Legit tacos! It's always the small places that are hard to find with some good food. Tacos were spot on. If you want something out side your BS chain and burger /cheese steak and fries, this is what you're looking for! Flavor and seasoning were spot on! Nailed it

    Mexican taco with chicken
    Rachel J.

I tried the Mexican style taco with chicken today for $4. It was pretty tasty. My only complaint would be it needed more sauce for the chicken since the chicken was a little dry. They did put a ton of meat on the taco to my surprise. I will be trying a different style next time.

Asian style pork, beef and chicken.

Jack of All Trades Boka's Tako is a fusion food and as with all fusion foods, it runs the risk of being a jack of all trade and master of none. Food I ordered three takos (chicken, pork, beef) all Asian style (kimchi, sesame aioli). Once before, I'd tried their tacos and felt like their sauce does a lot of the heavy lifting. This time wasn't much different. I explicitly tasted the meats separately and found them to be nothing special or a little dry. The kimchi is cut up so small that you don't get the crunchy texture. That's not to say the takos don't taste good. They do. They just don't match the level of mastery exhibited by LA taco trucks. I'm making a distinction based on where the flavor comes from. There are tacos where the meat can stand on it's own and tacos that need a mayo based sauce to taste good. For comparison, LA taco. Look at how the meat glistens. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/el-chato-taco-truck-los-angeles-2?select=oCI39dG8JyT2LFhWNPRadg#yFxvWDSi_XpnD9oNIkOmVw vs. Boka Tako. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/boka-truck-richmond?select=j4D3OPSR13gbS588HujVLQ#uYsdZTZJo_cVPPHW9DIOnQ Value I'm used to tacos between $1 and $2.25. Boka is $4 and up. And yet, I'm very happy that Boka exists. It's introducing the concept to a lot of Richmonders. It's only been around for 3 years, and these things come with age. Delicious! Anybody who works downtown is spoiled rotten being so close to this truck.

I noticed the ice cream/yogurt spot nearby was hopping. There was a person asking for change outside the front door. We were greeted by an enthusiastic host and seated immediately at a booth up front. The server came by within seconds and brought us water and place settings. We decided to get the chips and salsa for an appetizer and a pair of melting chimichangas for entrees. I can't resist some chorizo and steak. My partner got the chimichanga without chorizo and with chicken. The ambiance was colorful with beautifully painted murals on each wall, and the atmosphere was undeniably loud. There were lots of patrons. The place was packed, even at the bar, so your mileage may vary. We received our orders within minutes of each other, so there wasn't much of a wait time. The chips and salsa were homemade, fresh, warm, and delicious (muy rico). Same for the entrees; exactly what I want in a Mexican food restaurant. The chorizo and steak were well-cooked, seasoned, and chopped finely, but not ground. I was in heaven with that chimichanga. We had to take home leftovers. The next night, heated in the oven at 325 for 30 minutes, they were similarly excellent. The night ended without dessert, sadly (too full). However, the server was quick and efficient, and he was always around to fill water and bring anything we needed throughout the meal. Great experience overall. We will definitely return here whenever we have a hankering for some good Mexican food at reasonable prices. I can recommend this place to anyone who appreciates hearty and filling Mexican food.

The ambiance can be described as eclectic and casual. It's great for big groups and relaxed lunches. There's a variety of menu options for food and drink. Our server was nice, but she didn't really answer our questions about the menu or substitutions, which was a little inconvenient. Also, we kept having to ask for utensils and napkins, which made our food get a bit cold. The pineapple habanero margarita tasted like spicy pineapple juice and was pretty expensive. It was pretty, but not worth the money. The food also was really average, but the portion sizes were good for sharing. The huitlacoche tacos were a little bland and soggy, the chicken chipotle tacos had a good sauce but were also soggy and the fajitas did not have enough seasoning. Not a restaurant that I would come back to, but I liked it's proximity to other dessert places nearby.

Let me also give nuance to my love of Lolita's by saying first and foremost that I had the best cocktail I've ever had here, the Hotboxed Ferrari (Siete Misterios Mezcal, Byrrh, Piña, Campari, Fernet Branca, Cinnamon Deme, Salted Grapefruit Foam). I am rabid for Mezcal. I want to kiss the mixologist who developed this drink, because it is absolutely a balance of flavors that showcases the beautiful and perfect smokiness of Mezcal and good grief I almost fell out after my first sip. *deep breaths* So we just continue riding this wave of joy with the salsa and tostadas. Three types of salsas with unique flavors and different levels of heat. All three incredible. Blue-corn tostadas made in-house. And then a bowl of pozole verde. This damn sopa had me in a chokehold as well because how was everything perfect??? The textures, the flavors...I think I might have forgotten where I was because I got lost in that bowl. Best pozole verde I've ever had. Ordered the Choripapa and Suadero tacos- at this point I really could have ordered just one because your girl was almost at maximum capacity. The tacos are not cheap- ranging from $11-14- but to their credit, they do not skimp on the fillings and the flavors are top tier. Add in those fresh blue corn tortillas and you have a combination that truly did not miss in any way, shape, or form. Only disappointment I encountered the entire night was one of the drinks on the menu not actually being available (the frozen horchata-pumpkin colada), but my bartender made me a horchata coffee cocktail that definitely made up for it. Shout out to her, because she was throwing down on them drinks. So. True artistry experienced throughout the night, from the cocktails to the food. The atmosphere is so cool inside too, definitely a light summery feel which is a nice respite from this crazy winter blast we're experiencing at the moment. Love this spot and highly recommend.
