My son and I took a road trip to York, Pa to view a rare bird. Thankfully, the nearly three hour drive paid off, the bird, a Anna's Hummingbird(rare migrant from the west) was seen and we were off for lunch. My son had read about a chain named Bojangles. That they had better fried chicken and biscuits then Popeyes. We had seen a couple of their restaurants in Georgia. So, why not try the outpost in Reading on the way home? Good decision. The decor is really dated and the line was somewhat long for 1:30 pm. Service with a smile here. Our order of eight thighs, four biscuits and fries was ready in a snap. We took a seat and got down to some serious eating. The result? The best fried chicken we have had at a chain. Hot, fresh and crispy. Blows away KFC, Popeyes, Jersey Fried etc. The biscuits were outstanding. Yummy. We brought home some chicken tenders and biscuits for my wife. She loved them and she's a tough critic. Really meaty tenders, not just fried batter like you get at Popeyes. This is the closest Bo's to our home in Jersey. The next nearest spot is in DC. Will the chain expand? Visited the Bojangles at elm Eugene and Greensboro North Carolina and the food was not edible. Cajun chicken biscuit was greasy and like rubber and I couldn't eat it. The biscuit was drenched in oil and not edible. For $7 all I got was an unsweetened tea. May never eat at another Bojangles again as the exact same thing happened at the Bessemer Street location in Greensboro a couple of days ago. We ordered food on Tuesday early for dinner. The lady who initially helped us got the manager to approve immediately. He took our order we paid gave us assurance that we'd have no problems at pick up and he was absolutely correct. We got there a bit before 4:30 which was our pick up time and they were in the process of filling our order. So we had fresh food not old sitting under a warming lamp. Ever since I tried Bojangle's in Virginia Beach, I've had my eye on this location since this is the only Bojangle's that's within a reasonable distance for a day trip. This Bojangle's is a pad site in front of a strip mall on US-222 Business northbound, although if you're going southbound, there is a left turn traffic signal immediately before the restaurant. I have to say the fried chicken is very good and the biscuit and sides are a cut above other fried chicken places, but beyond that, there are numerous negatives. The employees, while polite and efficient when it was my turn to order, seemed to have trouble and voice-raising incidences with other customers while I was there. I'm not too fond of having all the amenities, e.g. napkins, plasticware, beverage dispenser, and condiments, all behind the counter, so one has to rejoin the line and ask at the counter if one needs more of anything. Also, they charge for drink refills unless you ordered a medium or large, which strikes me as a bit petty. And finally, the whole place looks very dark and dated for a fast food type of restaurant. Shocked that this place has 4 stars. I always used to pass by Bojangles and always wondered how their chicken compared to other competitors. Now in regards to fast food-southern fried chicken, I typically go for Popeyes. I stopped by for the first time the other day to try Bojangles out and compare it to Popeyes, which I am more than familiar with. I was honestly heavily disappointed. I went through the drive thru window and ordered the 4-piece supreme combo with fries. Just a side note: I recommend the drive thru, due to the fact that the interior design is extremely outdated and hideous. The combo was only $6.99!?! Great! Seriously, it is extremely cheap for a filling meal here, and the 4-piece combo is more than filling (+1 point). The best two parts of this entire meal were the fries and the biscuit. The fries were well seasoned with a slightly spicy/cajun/southern seasoning. They were honestly very good for a fast food joint. The biscuit was also very good, though, quite dry. Still (+1 point). The worst part of this combo meal is what Bojangles is supposed to be known for: the chicken. The chicken I received was slightly soggy from oil, and quite honestly, rather bland. I was expecting delicious southern spiced chicken with a nice crunch every time I took a bite. Unfortunately, I received quite the opposite. Not sure if I received a bad batch or not. Regardless the recipe for the chicken should remain consistent. My experience with their chicken is now equivalent to McDonalds and Wendy's chicken strips: basic and boring. Honeslty, McDonalds chicken selects are better! Compared to Popeyes, it is no question. Popeyes wins hands down for me. The decor of Bojangle's is a little odd, something along the lines of a Wendy's from the 80's. The biscuits are terrific -- much better than the breakfast biscuits at Chick-Fil-A or McDonald's. The servings of french fries are quite quite large, when compared to other possible side dishes, such as mashed potatoes with gravy or cole slaw. One thing that really annoys my wife is that you cannot pay extra for take-out buckets to get all white meat chicken. Went here for the first time ever a few weeks ago and it was pretty good! I ordered a chicken biscuit sandwich and my husband ordered the chicken tenders with a side of fries and Mac and cheese. The food was good the biscuits are a little too salty for my taste but the Mac and cheese was delicious! I wasn't very impressed with their "legendary" iced tea probably wouldn't order again If I went back. It was nice though the inside does offer high chairs for the little ones which is very convenient. Now onto some of the negative things their decor was very outdated and a lot of their tables were super wobbly. This is the only Bojangles that I know of in our whole region; the food is pretty great for a fast-food friend-chicken shop, but the inside decor is an eyesore for me (for my personal taste). Best fried chicken in the Reading area, hands down. Chain, mom-n-pop, doesn't matter. Bojangle's rules them all. Excellent fried chicken (spicy or mild), good sides, fair prices. Dirty rice, mashed potatoes, etc. The fries can be hit or miss, but in general they're very good and the seasoning that they put on them is amazing. And a special shout-out to the biscuits. These biscuits are legit. I'd like to hug whoever prepares them. I always get a few extra. Aside from the obvious choices, I can recommend the chicken fried steak biscuit sandwich (they often have a BOGO deal on these), the cheddar bo (biscuit with a slice of cheddar cheese in the middle), and -- if they have them -- the sweet potato pie. Visually it's similar to the apple pies at McDonald's, but Bojangles sweet potato pie is far superior -- delicious fried magic. Two warnings: 1. They get super busy right around dinner time, and the drive-thru window can get backed up. That goes double for Friday. 2. If you plan on dining in, you're going to smell like fried food and chicken. Definitely worth the trip here regardless of where you may hail from. So far my second visit here with my buds Pat and Kevin. First off the vibe this place puts off is welcoming. With a friendly staff of smiles it sets the tone for what's to come. The chicken is juicy and fresh and the biscuits homemade and delicious. First trip I went for a more traditional approach ordering a 2 piece meal with a side of dirty rice and Mac & cheese. The rice held its own nicely with the right amount of seasoning not overly salty and the bits of meat mixed in were savory and also well seasoned. The mac and cheese creamy and smooth with nice non-artificial flavor. The biscuits are enough to hold their own day in and day out. Nice buttery slightly crispy outside with a moist dense interior. They truly have a homemade flavor all their own and washed down with a cup of their in house brewed sweet tea leaves me more than content. By the way breakfast is served all day and is equally as good. The ham biscuits almost remind me of a bacon like texture with how the ham is sliced and grilled. The sausage again a true winner. Not your traditional frozen patties you come to expect from other fast food establishments but more of a freshly sliced patty lean but flavorful and we'll seasoned. Everytime I go in here everyone is so nice, especially the old man and the girls at the register. My boyfriend loves their buffalo wings and stops in once a week... Here is what I'm noticing lately- they are making some bad business decisions lately. I have an MBA in finance and I feel like I'm seeing a bad case study. They raised their prices recently for an upsized biscuit combo from $5.50 to $7.09. Today, we saw that they introduced new sizes for the fries. The large is still $3.00+ but the amount they now give you is easily half if not less than what they used to give you. Since the place is dated and dirty, you really can't raise prices and reduce portions while leaving everything else the same. I absolutely love going to Bojangles their chicken is the best thing since I tried KFC for the first time. I stopped KFC for them because they were the best. However as of my last visit I can honestly say that this was the worst experience at a fast food restaurant or any restaurant that I have ever had. First there were three hairs in the mac and cheese and they accused us of putting hairs in there on purpose then there was my cinnamon buns were rock hard cold but burnt on the bottom so they were obviously made hours prior. When ordering an 8-piece tailgate pack we were given seven wings and one thigh when it was supposed to be a variety and told after waiting 20 minutes already for our chicken that we needed to wait another 15 minutes if we wanted different pieces of chicken. Absolutely the worst customer service no hair nets their hair wasn't even pulled back in a ponytail it was flowing on their shoulders there was no hats to keep their hair back nothing very unsanitary not a good experience and will not be going again. read more
