Anyway, I took a ride up to Reading, PA recently to check out a truck for sale and stopped at Bo's for some yardbird afterwards since I knew there was one there. (Come on, Bojangles, WTF? Forget Chic-Fil-A, this is the best fast food chicken chain. It's my guilty pleasure and there's only one location in all of a Pennsylvania, so you know the almost hour long drive out of the way is worth it. Even though the Reading location is a older and a bit dated, not to mention always packed with a long drive through wait, I've always had a good experience here. The staff is friendly and quick, and my order has never been wrong. Their biscuits are perfect and their signature Mountain Dew flavor (Southern Shock) is quite tasty. Man, was I spoiled. When I was young, it wasn't often my family ate fast food for dinner (since my mom was such a great cook and pretty much demanded my sister and I eat healthy growing up). Then I started noticing people from the west coast had never even heard of Bojangles. WHAT?! After doing a little research, I found out a few things. DID YOU KNOW? This Bojangles location is the only one in Pennsylvania. It's also the northernmost location in the U.S. It's also the easternmost location. There is a whole part of this country that is not aware of Bojangles' existence. Well, rest of the country, let me tell you what you're missing - SOME OF TH BEST DAMN FRIED CHICKEN YOU'LL EVER EAT! I mean, it's crispy, it's tender, it's got that secret blend of southern spices. When I walk into a Bojangles, I feel like Ray Kroc when he first walked into McDonald's - in absolute awe, watching intently, knowing full well these stores are well oiled machines, effortlessly churning out buckets of impeccably fried chicken. Oh, and let's just talk about the sides for a second. Yeah, they have the usual biscuits, coleslaw, mac & cheese, green beats, and even grits ... but the real star of the slideshow of side shows? I don't usually write a review for a fast food place, but we spent 25 years in the Carolinas and Good Old Bo was a favorite. We live in Lancaster PA now, so this Bo was 35 mins away and we decided to treat ourselves on a drizzly Saturday afternoon. This place is immaculately clean, rest rooms are spotless. Manager is incredible, his attention to detail, how long food has been sitting, everything is very focused on quality and customer appreciation. When we mentioned we came all the way from Lancaster he gave my wife a free cookie and some other stuff. What a great man! Staff was very nice and polite. I'm not the type to write reviews but I felt that this establishment deserved one. Total wait time in the drive thru was 90 minutes. But the worst part of it all is that we waited at the drive thru window itself for 45 MINUTES. And I could see the high school kids they call employees literally talking doing absolutely nothing. Not one order was prepared or served for 45 minutes. When I asked after all this time where my food was, I was told they were waiting on the chicken sandwiches. My order consisted of 2 chicken sandwiches and 2 orders of fries. That's it... When we tried to angrily eat our food after all this time, my PREGNANT girlfriend then finds a piece of plastic in her sandwich. To add, our sandwiches were cold nearly frozen.. this was honestly the worst food experience ever on top of the absolute worst customer service ever. I got a sausage egg and cheese biscuit and tater-tot/mini hash browns; I think they're called "Bo-tatos" This was an actual, real egg. Not a "rethermalized" egg like you would get at Dunkin' donuts which was likely cooked by a robot a thousand miles away. The biscuit part was great The eggs were perfect. If I could change anything I would have made the sausage just a tad more spicier but that's just a personal preference. I might be biased... but I grew up eating here. It was the best place to eat chicken and fries, I still think it is. I'm super happy they renovated inside, it was about time! The service varies, but I noticed it's usually when they slow down. I think fast food will always be like that. The best time to come is during lunch hours and dinner. The logo and decor are reminiscent of a 70's Las Vegas casino cafeteria, minus the sound of slot machines. The order counter/wall was really weird. The food is excellent, but there doesn't seem to be any interest in training employees on basic order protocols. The people in front of me stood there for fifteen minutes without a word being said to them. They spoke up and their order was taken. One fine day, friends and I stumbled into the only Bojangle's in Pennsylvania. I found their 1970's-era countrified interior to be very Twilight Zone, the perfect lunch setting. It was around 1:30 pm, and still a bit crowded. A retiree/cashier took my credit card, took my order, and returned with chicken moments later. Per the cashier's recommendation, I volunteered to be a test subject for their creamy cole slaw: not only did the slaw taste like the opposite of boiled babies, I'm still alive to write about it. Anyway, I used a spork to attack the crispy breading of my southern-style, Cajun-spiced chicken leg, exposing the slightly greasy underworld beneath. The meat came right off the bone, no rending required. My fried chicken smelled like fried chicken, but tasted like crack cocaine. Yum! Greasy chicken, buttery biscuits, and diabetes-inducing iced tea are some of the worst things you can possibly eat. Bojangles is an experience unto itself, this location is the only one in the state of PA, and the only one reasonably nearby (If you can call 90 miles that) to where i live. Ive made a couple of trips here, once for dinner, and another for brunch, and so far Bojangles has refused to disappoint. My most recent trip was taking a look at the breakfast biscuits on offer which are fairly cheap at about $2 a pop, i tried the current limited ham biscuit which was superb. The ham's flavor was extremely powerful closer to an ultra thick bacon than a typical ham slice, and the biscuit was fantastic as well, moist on the inside, the slightest crisp on the out, even texture, and beautiful buttermilk flavor, biscuits at bo's wont disappoint you, ever. The sausage biscuit i tried was also fairly good but didn't have that same flavor punch as the ham, the sausage was quite good and i enjoyed the thorough spiciness, its just the biscuit out savory'd the sausage. You know a place has decent food when the biggest problem you see is certain items outshining others. The real show stopper however were the Bo-tato rounds, i went into my order of them with relatively low expectations, and wound up absolutely floored. First off these things are huge, and you get 10 of them with a "picnic" size order. Secondly im pretty sure these are made in house, the rounds weren't uniform, and the potato was just too fresh. If i didn't know better id say they're made in house, and have a teensy bit of onion in them for that extra flavor, either way i absolutely loved these bo-tato rounds. The last time i went i grabbed some of the boneless tenders, tried some sides, and while i ordered sweet tea both visits, i figure its only fair to talk about it while over viewing my first experience. There are two types of chicken tenders here, i cant remember which version i had but they were fantastic, juicy meat and crisp breading, none of that dried out chicken nonsense other places have going on, these tenders are as moist as rotisserie chicken on the inside. On the sides...side of things the dirty rice, was absolutely fantastic. I'm not personally the biggest fan of rice but it was so smooth and buttery, and the little chucks of meat (Pretty sure it was some form of sausage) were to die for. Mac here was quite decent, not life changing but very rich, cant quite keep up with some of the home made or house baked macs I've had, but its definitely the best mac and cheese I've seen at fast food location, and beats out a lot of diners and restaurants as well. The Tea here has some consistency issues, but is always fantastic throughout, a nice home brewed sweet tea made at location and bottled daily as far as i can tell, amount of sugar in use does vary slightly day-by day, and there is always the off chance your half gallon may be from the bottom of the pot and have some actual tea leaf bits, but this stuff is fantastic throughout, even on the lighter batches, and as far as i'm concerned the tea leaves just make it healthier. I'm absolutely enamored with Bojangles, i just wish it were a whole lot closer to me down in Philadelphia. Fried chicken at it's best but it depends on when you stop by for your meal. If you stop in after two you get the dregs of dry chicken. But if you come by during dinner or lunch you are in for a fantastic chicken feast. When I do show up here at the right times the chicken is crunchy, juicy, and oh so good. The biscuits are soft and moist as well as the sides. As for the restaurant itself it has been around for decades and basically looks the part. That is why I suggest drive thru, its easy, fast and you are on your way to chicken goodness. The thing about Bojangles is that its only in the north area, they don't exist in Texas so I always make sure to stop by when I visit. Terrible service!!! Waited in line 45 mins! Line was so backed up like they made everyones food on demand. Got to the window the blonde girl with horrible nails working the drive thru 1/24 at 4:14 ish was horrible!!! I watched her through the window not wearing gloves, chatting it up and messing around while the line was like a mile. I ordered a kids meal and asked for no seasoning on the fries since my child was allergic. I checked and bloom there was seasoning. Told her about it and she rolls her eyes like I made the mistake. So of course I checked the rest of my order and I was missing gravy for the mash, told her and she proceeded to say it's in the box and they don't put it on top anymore. So since she didn't get the other stuff right I check the box. No gravy!!! Then I tell her and she starts to huff and puff. Goes back and gets me gravy. Have to say every time I come to visit Reading I have to stop here. Was a family dinner often when we lived here years ago. Today was great as always. The only thing that was bad I had to use drive-thru due to covid. I love going in as most of the time I see a former manager I worked for when I was in high school Wendy and she's still always smiling! We haven't visited Bojangles in a very long time and we wanted to compare Bojangles vs KFC vs Popeyes today. We ordered a 3 PC Dinner, all chicken thighs (that's cool that they allow you to choose which pieces you want IF you request it), french fries, mash potatoes & gravy, and a large soda. The first issue was that 90% of the tables there were filthy and dirty. The next issue was that the fried chicken was VERY oily. The fried batter quickly separated from the chicken and the taste was just mediocre. I liked their fries way better than Popeyes and just slightly better than KFC. Their mash potatoes & gravy was much better than Popeyes, but slightly worse than KFC. Their fried chicken was worse than both Popeyes and KFC, mostly due to the extreme oiliness and underwhelming flavor. My parents are long-time HUGE fans of Bojangles, but during a recent visit they told me that their fried chicken tastes different now and is not as good (flavorful) as before. I agree that the fried chicken wasn't that great. In conclusion, the sides (particularly the fries) were better than the chicken and that's just sad for a place that primarily serves fried chicken. We'll visit again in 10 years from now to see if anything has changed. read more

What's way better than KFC and better than Popeyes? It's Bojangles. I Stopped by here on a recent trip to Dorney Park and was very happy to find some delicious southern style spicy fried chicken. The chicken is salty and yet slightly spicy. The skin is super crunchy. The beans are delicious and I prefer the dirty rice over the mashed potatoes.
