Welcome to Struggletown. My whole family cringed as soon as we entered the restaurant. The screams…read moreof children echoed off the barren walls. We shouldered through to the single register but instead of waiting for a human we chose to use the self-order kiosk. The ordering process was fine until the end when the screen wouldn't accept payment and went blank. We weren't sure if the order went through or not so we had to wait in line at the single register to speak to the struggle bus driver. Fortunately the order did go through so we paid and shuffled into a corner to wait. Our next challenge was to keep our five year old from touching the glass of the happy meal toy display case. It was visibly smeared with shmeg from all the previous window lickers that had crammed into the tarrying corner. From this vantage point we had a clear view of the filthy kitchen. Scraps of lettuce and stomped fries jockeyed for position amongst scattered pallets and fumbled sesame seed buns. After 15 minutes our food appeared but straws and napkins were absent. I made a lap around the restaurant hoping to grab some on the way out the door but there weren't any. Everything is kept on lockdown behind the single register and handed out at the discretion of Miss Strugglebus. Finally back in the car, a second inventory revealed missing kids fries and cookies. Reluctantly, I dove headfirst back into the chaos for another visit with Senorita Strugglebus. Simply put, this McDonalds is struggling harder than any I've seen before. One star is appropriate because the staff were hustling. Props to them for doing their best despite the grim working conditions. The problems here run much deeper than management and staffing. A suitable solution would be razing it to the ground.

Big As Biscuits & Burgers - It's HUGE

If you're cruising through the Tri-Cities like we are checking out neighborhoods and seeing if this…read moremight be a place we want to call home you still have to eat. We drove from Johnson City to Kingsport one morning looking for something quick, and as always, I trusted my Yelp peeps to point us toward something good. Big As Biscuits & Burgers is tucked inside a gas station but don't let that deter you for a second. These biscuits are no joke. We were originally thinking of a sit-down breakfast, but my partner is a full-blown biscuit enthusiast. If we see biscuits, we try the biscuits. So we stopped in, and the woman behind the counter was incredibly friendly and welcoming. We grabbed a ginormous biscuit for just over $3. She had all the single-serve jams and jellies ready to go, which I appreciated. We took it back to the car to eat. First impression: this thing requires two hands. It's massive. She had already sliced it for us, and when I opened it up, you could see the buttery pockets where it melted into the dough while baking. It wasn't ultra-layered and flaky like a laminated biscuit, but it was perfectly soft on the inside with a beautiful crunch on the outside. The flavor was spot on!!! Soft, warm, buttery and comforting. We added a little jam, though honestly it didn't even need butter. It was that good. If you're looking for a quick, satisfying bite that will absolutely fill your belly, stop at Big As Biscuits & Burgers. We're already talking about grabbing a few more to bring back to the hotel before we leave town. Sometimes the best finds are inside a gas station and sometimes a biscuit really can make your morning.

It's inside the gas station if you're looking for it. The ambiance matches but the seating area is…read morea touch more homey. The biscuits: BAM! You're gonna be surprised. Not because they are big since you expect that from the name but because they are right. Crisp buttery crust and fluffy yet moist interior. 60% of biscuits in the world are failures due to a dry interior. Another 20% fail for being too dense and wet, cakey instead of fluffy. Big As Biscuit does it right and nails the texture. The breakfast biscuit offerings are fast food like but definitely a step up from the nat'l chains. The variety is astounding and I imagine almost everyone can get one exactly as they want. The burgers: Don't try to get one on Saturday. Sadly I was told they don't prep them on Saturday. The rest of the week though the burgers are worth the drive for a lunch if you're within striking distance. It's a good size and the fixins are fresh. It's been awhile since I had one so I'm short on details. I remember enjoying it though and ranking it above any fast food burger. I did try to get another one last Saturday so obviously I'd go back for one. I got a steak biscuit instead. It was a very thin food service chicken fried steak. Half its thickness was breading. It was good eaten alone. Inside of a biscuit though it was basically a mouthful of bread. The eggs also were a food service product I think. Two homogeneous pale yellow egg pucks were on my steak biscuit. A little institutional but they tasted ok. I wouldn't get the steak biscuit again as it's too bready but I am looking forward to trying a sausage or ham biscuit. Either way with the size of the biscuit it's a lot of food. I don't imagine there's too many of us that would want two for breakfast I can legitimately recommend you give this place a try. It's good food and plenty of it.
