    Boilerman Barbecue

I found Boilerman BBQ by accident. I was headed to Metal Mart in Merkel, Texas, and I needed a pit stop NOW! I stopped at the Iron Horse Travel Center, which was new to me. Iron Horse was extremely nice and clean. At one end is Boilerman Barbecue, a small restaurant with a decent menu. Breakfast tacos in the morning, and specials at noon and dinner. Prices were decent, so I went back for supper that night. The brisket loaded potato was such a good seller they ran out, so I tried my favorite, ribs! They have all the normal BBQ meats, about 8 different sides, and 4 or 5 different desserts. I got ribs, roasted veggies, and broccoli casserole. A pretty decent meal. The ribs get 3.5/5, roasted veggies 3.0/5, and the broccoli casserole gets 4.5/5! That was some good broccoli casserole! I was too full for dessert, and took home leftovers. I think it's worth stopping for a quick meal. Give Boilerman a try!

Absolutely some of the best BBQ I've had in ages - and I'm a bbq snob from Kansas City!…read more We had the sampler (brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken, and one each of the mild and spicy sausages). I fully expected that one or two of the meats would be good and the rest just passable. I was wrong. Every single bite was spectacular. We also had the brisket and queso chips and pig candy - both were really tasty; the chips especially were very fresh and sprinkled with just a touch of bbq rub. We arrived a few minutes before they opened on a warm Saturday and the wait was about 75 minutes or so. Definitely worth standing in line for. There's ample outdoor (but covered) seating and plenty of good music playing, plus cornhole games if you're feeling competitive. Jays will be our go-to for BBQ the next time we're in Abilene! PS - if it's still available when you go, be sure to try the cherry chipotle sauce - it's amazing!

They do have restrooms so that's nice. The line gets long and they are slow in taking orders and getting the food out. We arrived around 11:15 on a Friday and the line was already long so we decided we would order to go as we need to get to Lubbock before 3:00pm. We ordered the Texas Trinity to go. This place has charm and lots of stuff to look at while waiting in the long slow line. You can go up and order beer to drink in line but my thought is that the beer is over price. Some places have free beer or free water while you wait outside in the Texas heat, not here. So the food we got made it all the way back to eat in Houston on Sunday when we got back. The true test of good BBQ is how it taste when you reheat it, all the food was good but the brisket was a bit dry 8/10, the sausage was nice 9/10 and the pork rib was good 9/10. I recommend you try Jays BBQ when in the city of Abilene, Texas

They had a special brunch buffet going on but we opted for the regular brunch menu and it did not disappoint! My husband had the Smokehouse breakfast, I had the a Biscuits & Gravy, and we shared the pancakes. We didn't get our servers names but she was very sweet and friendly! We loved it all and this is definitely going to be on our regular rotation for brunch spots!

(chips were pretty good) The salmon was overcooked and the grilled broccoli practically raw. This meal was so underwhelming it reminded me of maybe something you might pick up in a grocery store in that section where people who don't cook go to get ready-made meals. It was right at that level. Service- Two or three stars. Mediocre. I've been here once before, btw, and that experience was probably an overall 3-star. This time was right before a show at the convention center next door. You'd think that maybe the restaurant would have been prepared for a crowd? Apparently not, since our food was slow to come (the table next to us had both of their steaks comp'ed due to slow service and not being cooked as asked). When I asked for a wine list, the server stated that he would "try to find one", and it took awhile. And the restaurant was probably only about 60% full. I mean, if I'm going to wait forever for my food, at least let me be drinking while I wait! The appetizer arrived with our food, btw. Love that... Ambiance: Five Stars. The restaurant looks nice. Get your act together, Smokehouse! It would be nice if we could count on a nice meal before a show without having to Uber to and from the hotel/venue for it.
