I came in with the goal of having a workout on my schedule. In my mind, I didn't need a trainer, I needed to get back in the gym and START. This gym had all I would need, was close to work, and merely having paid appointments would get my butt in the door for much needed self care. Kirk Cortez seemed like a nice guy, all was good. I signed up. Kirk turned out to be so much more than a nice guy. I came in to him broken from 3 years of health issues that included 3 big surgeries, and treatments and infections in between. I hadn't worked out in 4 years (and really hadn't pursued PT and other therapies to help, as I had lost so much time at work). I was incredibly fatigued, and knew that it would only get worse if I didn't start really moving my carcass ;) SO, I was in a poor state of fitness, and had areas that were frozen, tender, etc. I was nervous, and my past experience with trainers led me to believe I would be fighting him quite a lot while he tried to push me hard. He was the OPPOSITE. Kirk focused on many things, and the least of it was getting me jacked. One of his primary goals to assist in my healing and recovery was BLOOD FLOW. He talked to me about why and how much that would help. He was right. He checked in on me constantly, not just counting reps - but adjusting form and asking how it felt. There were some things that were a real challenge - that I would have thought of as silly, or not believed, just a year or two ago. He was the first to say that the worst thing for progress was to push too hard at this point. He pointed out that if I stretched something too much so that the next days things would be painful or pulling back, we would lose momentum, and muscles will actually tighten up on their own to act protective. He also didnt want me to be in pain so much that I would fear or dread coming in, as the progress in my mind was critical as well. There were times I was gassed, and there were other times that I wanted to push harder. Kirk applied wisdom in both cases - dropping weights or going to the floor and keeping me going when I was tired, and holding me to his plan when I was fired up and wanted to do too much. I left feeling great EVERY D@MN DAY I trained. There is nothing like having a crap day at work and then knocking out a training session, getting sweaty, and feeling AMAZING after. Take that, bad day! Throughout our workouts, we talked a lot about being banged up, the surprise of what we lose and how we change when injured - and not just physically. He understood how one area could have impact upon your whole body, and could damage your mood and outlook. He has had his share of injuries, which was INCREDIBLY relevant in my situation. Not only did I feel safe - as it was evident that he knew what he should and should not have me perform, but there was incredible relief not having to explain, argue, and feel that I was making excuses. I felt understood. There is a lot of tension released from that - who knew! He was always upbeat, we could talk work stuff, food, or anything else that made for an entertaining story. Kirk is a great trainer! Very friendly, and more importantly very knowledgeable about lifting. He has an immense breadth of knowledge from decades of experience. He teaches not only the exercises you should do, but also the proper form and way to structure your workouts with varying rep ranges and intensities. He'll fine tune the weights to perfectly for each set to match your fitness level. Prepare to feel the burn! The gym is nice and private. It looks small compared to your traditional commercial gym, but it has every machine you need/want. Would highly recommend for beginner or advanced lifters! read more

I have ridiculously high standards in this area. However, Chris has honestly exceeded all of my expectations. I admittedly needed to be held accountable with getting the workouts in and checking in with my nutrition (which he does). It's nice to have a person as invested in my health as me. Also, I've mostly had female trainers in the past, but Chris is by far the best (without ever being skeevy or anything that some of us females are concerned about). Only trainers and their clients are allowed to use the equipment, which is great! Kirk (the owner) is also wonderful and makes everyone feel at home in the gym. No judgy gym peeps like we've all had to deal with in the past. Can't say enough about this place, I'm here every time I'm in San Diego! I just finished my first 12 week program of working out at BFL in Poway. Let's start with the data. I dropped from 26% body fat to 18%. Lost 15 lbs of fat and gained 9 lbs of muscle. Most importantly, I like what I see in the mirror now. At 50 years old, i didn't like feeling like I was getting old, so I decided to do something about it. After meeting the people at BFL, I liked what I saw and decided to give it a shot. After all, twice a week for 12 weeks is a small commitment for self improvement. It didn't take long at all for the one hour sessions to become addictive and I looked forward to them as the best part of my week. Since I joined, only a short three months ago, not only did my body composition COMPLETELY change (I see muscle definition in places where I had No Idea muscles existed), but I also lost 35pounds of pure body fat, it's amazing. My husband and I literally drive home to Ramona from work, and then back down to Poway to train with Kirk in the evenings. The proof is on the wall at his gym by each check being displayed proudly. Wow.. And yes I have read the Body for Life book but is in NO comparison to his own individualized personal fitness transformation program. There are so many other 4-8-12 weeks before and after photos in his gym besides his few on his website, they go from the front of the gym all the way to his restroom. Lol!
