The building is located in a warehouse-like area, but it works for a gym! After the first class, I was exhausted. The class is different every time. There can be weights, ropes, burpees and everything in between. The exercises and timed reps really help me in building endurance. Brenda is an excellent trainer. She encourages rest for those who aren't physically advanced and also pushes us when she knows we are capable of continuing certain workouts. I ask how to do certain exercises the proper way plenty of times and Brenda is kind enough to demonstrate them. I've attended her classes several times and intend to keep coming for my one intense workout a week.

I mentioned for Father's Day, lets treat ourselves and work out at the Powerhouse Gym! What's great about this gym, they offer a daily rate. So we all agree to meet Saturday morning at Powerhouse Gym in Syosset. A very nice man greets us at the counter. He takes our information and scans each one of us into the system. We all start talking about "Bev Francis", Powerlifting champion of the 80s who broke more than 40 world Powerlifting records as well as the first woman to bench press over 300lbs. I'm diggin' the spot already! We're racking up the plates and ready to start our work out. A few regular members start talking to us, one guy tells me: There is equipment here from the 1970s! I'm not talking about old, junky stuff. There are certain tried and true weight lifting equipment that will never be out of fashion to use. Now I start looking at the other members. There are quite a few, just insane members that are lifting some serious weight. After working out I notice something I'm taking away from the gym: Old guys. That's right. When I was a kid in Brooklyn, my dads friends thought they were tough like Sonny Coleone. Not these guys. They were a few years older than me, but all in great shape. I watched them working out, just throwing weights around and having a good time. This isn't Planet Fitness where you have folks "resting" after each set. All of the members are a serious bunch of folks with serious goals. It was a pleasure to work out at Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym. I had already tried a local Planet…read moreFitness on their free day pass a few days earlier, which was fine...I suppose, but I needed something better. I'm not from NY and was not previously familiar with Bev Francis' Powerhouse Gym. What an experience! First, this place is enormous. Largest square footage of pure lifting equipment I've ever seen, and even more so, the largest variety of machines. Some contraptions so esoteric, it's not even clear what muscles they work from looking at them. The place is like the Smithsonian of weight machines. But there were a few things I discovered that I really loved and wished my own local gym had something similar. Second, this place is crowded. I was there mid-morning Saturday, and it was packed. I didn't need to wait for machines since I wasn't following a specific program, but if I had gone with a very specific set of exercises and order in mind, it would have been frustrating. The equipment condition varied depending on their age. Some was great, some seemed like they should have been retired a decade ago. Be aware that the gym caters more to elite bodybuilding than elite powerlifting. It won't make a difference for 99% of people, but as one example, there was a relative paucity of squat racks and benches for a place this large. If you are worried about being intimidated by the clientele, that may be a reasonable concern. I'm one of the biggest guys in most gyms, and I was only about average among the 100+ guys that were there. Having said that, there were only 1-2 freakishly large dudes (i.e. probable pro-bodybuilders), and the handful of people I interacted with seemed all relatively friendly. But it's not a place for beginners. Tiny annoyance: they have 2 scales which differed by 7 pounds (despite zeroing the ancient balance scale)

This program has it all : structure, motivation, personal attention from trainers and a supportive group of people cheering you on. Before TFW I had tried it all. Group classes, boot camps, p90x. Nothing kept me motivated the way TFW did. The combination of power lifting and compound exercises is so effective, you see results right away. When you hit your personal bests and keep pushing through in class, it has a ripple effect in your life. He's been coming here for years, so I started in November. The owner, Joe, and all the coaches, especially Brian and Kerry, are great!! They've been helping me every step of the way. All the members are so friendly and helpful, everyone made me feel welcome right away. The TFW classes are an intense workout with high energy that will make you fit and strong. There's a different style of the class everyday that will keep you coming back every night. Lots of hard work and lots of fun at the same time!!

Alan takes pride in maintaining the equipment and is always visible on the gym floor, making sure everything is running smoothly while checking in with members. No line for the equipment, plenty of dumbbells available for this dumbbell at all times, proactive maintenance staff who keep the showers, sauna, toilets and the workout floor clean and stocked; nice layout with a quiet room with loads of mats to do stretching, yoga poses( 2 seconds for me) and ab work, a nice tricep pull-down area and a basketball court. No racquetball but Farmingdale is just a few minutes east. Love that the juice bar has added protein pre made meals in their freezer with a microwave for immediate consumption. The sauna is always hot. I get to this location maybe 3 or 4 times a year. I have to mention the wonderful Gabriel who opened the gym in the snowstorm at 7 am sharp. He was happy and welcoming as the rush came in. Thank you LAF for being open today. Now it's foodie fun time as the NFL Championship games are just a few hours away.

Prices are a bit steep but it gets better if you go on a family plan. They also provide a lot of gym amenities to make the pricetag worth it. From pickleball courts to rock climbing. Basketball courts as well. There are so many things to do at the facility beyond normal gym and fitness. They also have an indoor and outdoor pool. Both of them are very large and spacious. The outdoor one also has waterslides and a poolside bar and grill. It really feels like a resort. The indoor amenities are good as well. You can relax in the hot tub or sit in a sauna/steam room. There are also cold plunge pools. I love the unlimited studio classes. Xtreme intervals and maxout upper/lower body are my favorites. The instructors are energetic and motivating. They always keep me on my toes while keeping the overall class still fun and entertaining. If you're looking for more than just a basic gym, Life Time is the place to be.
