When I attended Wayne State College some buddies told me about this place called Bob's Bar and Grill. I was told about their hamburgers and huge sides. They said we need to tell you it ain't fancy and is in a really small town. I said ok, let's try it. All I have to say is...after one visit I was sold. The hamburgers are huge the sides just as big and the atmosphere is super fun. Sadly it has been over 20 years since my last visit to Bob's, but I know it is still there cause many of my college friends make it a point to visiting Bob's when making a visit to campus. Old old small town hole in the wall. My favorite kind of place!!!! No renovations. Nothing fancy. Most food is deep fried frozen bar food that you wash down with a cheap beer. It was a busy busy Saturday night and it took a while to get the food. About an hour from the time we sat down but that was fine with us. The best dive bar I've ever told other people I've been to, I've even invited my family to come along. As the address says Bob's Bar is in Ponca, NE, they are actually located in Martinsburg, NE. The town is so small, that their address is a P.O. Box in Ponca. The main street is paved, but if you do a tour of the rest of the town, many streets are still dirt roads. So, you really do not have to worry about parking, you get the entire town to choose from. Bob's Bar is famous as being "This Home of the 1 Pound Hamburger." You will not come here if you are on a health kick or a diet, you come here for dive bar food at a ridiculously cheap price. I have been coming to Martinsburg for years and it seems the economy has even hit Bob's Bar. The burgers use to be the size of the plate back in the 90's, now they are just a little bigger than the bun. Still large and in charge, Martinsburg is worth the drive. As I do not live in Nebraska anymore, on my last visit home, I did take my Colorado girlfriend here for a visit. Her words exactly, "I loved it! I love the giant hamburgers, I loved the cheese curds. Just greasy artery clogging wonderfulness." I think she said it best and so true. To the locals of Martinsburg, this is possibly the only business, for sure the only restaurant. The menu is quite simple, I do not think it has ever changed. Pop is ordered per can, fries and side orders are much larger than a regular side. They come on a full plate, piled up like a pyramid. If I remember correctly, their credit card machine did not work, so be sure to bring cash just in case. If you get the chance to chat with a local, they will give you a great history. When I first got hired for my current job, a co-worker thought it would be funny to take a Southern California girl to Bob's Bar. We get to the front of the bar and all I saw was this old white building with paint falling off and a sign that's nearly faded away. We walked in and the place smelled like stale beer and old oil. The seats at the tables are torn and its dark and dank. I had a humongous hamburger and ordered a side of tater tots that wasn't really a side at all-- the order was big enough to feed 10 people! The burger tasted alright. I left not really knowing what to think. But you know what? The place does grow on you. I've been back twice since and it's turned out to be a great place to hang out, eat fried food and drink beer with friends. Aside of their famous burgers, their fried food is amazing, even though you feel like you're going to have a heart attack after. It's crispy, seasoned perfectly and comes out real fast. Gizzards, fried cheese balls, fried mushrooms, fried onion petals, french fries-- awesome. It's also a fun place to watch all the different kinds of people that come in. A guy tried to hit on my girlfriends and me by getting chummy with my bf. He said he loves Bob's Bar ... yeah, sure you do, buddy. This place is in the middle of nowhere. Literally no one you know has been here. It's not a destination. The food is not even as good as the stuff I make at home. It's economy supermarket freezer isle grade. It has zero competition. What a fun experience! We went on a Friday evening and it was very busy and no tables were available. They took our order and the four of us were seated within 10 minutes. Three waitresses were working and they did a great job! Our food came over an hour later, but we didn't mind the wait. We were just enjoying our beer and taking it all in. Each couple split a cheeseburger (12 ounces) and we ordered the fries and cheese balls (enough to feed 12 people). We ate less than half of each and took the rest home. Great value! I was traveling up to Sioux City, IA with our motorcycle group and I asked around and a lot of people mentioned Bob's Bar. We arrived there around 12:30 pm on a Saturday July 31st and it wasn't that busy. It seats quite a few people, and we got a seat near the kitchen. We all ordered cheeseburgers which were only $3. In fact, we had heard of these large burgers, and we thought we weren't finding them on the menu because they were so cheap. They made them fresh, and when they arrived it was excellent! It looks kind of run down on the outside and on the inside to an extent but it's not dirty. Parking is a little scarce but it's a small town and walking a bit to and from your car will help burn some calories from the giant burger and mountain of cheese curds you just ate. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. The only problem is that when they get really busy they seem to have a hard time keeping up with everyone at the same time.
