Kentuck Lake - The fishing is great!

Kentuck Lake

My favorite lake on this entire sphere!. Kentuck Lake is approximately a 950 acre lake located in…read moreboth Vilas County & Forest counties. It has a maximum depth of 40 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from 2 public boat landings. Fish include Musky, Perch, Blue Gill, Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass & Walleye. The lake's water clarity is low. The lake is completely surrounded by beautiful tree covered rolling hills. Most of the shore is rocky & steep. But, a few areas have shallow & sandy beaches. The lake has some of the best fishing in Wisconsin. The lake holds a lot of natural structure. The DNR sank a line of log cribs to enhance fish habitats. The entire lake produces great fishing. I've landed 2 Musky's in a day on the lake. I've also have landed Walleye as big as 26 inches & Small Mouth Bass as long as 20" weighing 5 pounds plus. Walleye's are my only keepers, everything else I throw back. Fishing regulations are posted at each boat ramp landing, please read & adhere to these rules. Keep this awesome fishery strong. The lake is surrounded by approximately 50 lake houses, the majority are only occupied a few times a year. Traffic on the lake is slow, usually a handful of fishing boats most weekends. I've had it all to myself at times during the week. Our family lake house has been on Kentuck lake for the past 18 years. In all that time I've only seen about a dozen boats towing water skiers. We are predominately a nice & quiet fishing lake. Typical noises that can be heard are wind, water & the abundance of Bald Eagles soaring overhead. Just the way I like it!! You can get me out of the woods. But, you can't get the woods out of me!

First time at The Musky Shop today. Came in looking for a new rod and reel. We were greeted by…read moremultiple employees when we entered the shop. After looking on our own for a few minutes, an employee asked if he could help. I told him what I was looking for in a rod length and weight, and that I'd need a reel as well. He pointed out a special that the store was running on a Shield rod and AbuGarcia reel. They didn't have the length I wanted in the heavy action, but offered to take the rod action I was looking for and mating it with the package reel. There were rods and reels that were much more expensive, but they didn't push the higher priced items. And talk about musky lures! Holy mother Mary! There must be 10's of thousands of musky lures in the shop. Hard to believe there is a musky lure made that they don't have! I'm hooked and will be back!

Over the past three years, I have been a repeat customer of this shop, booking more than a dozen…read moreguided fishing trips at $500 per day. Unfortunately, I have been consistently disappointed--not primarily because the fish weren't always biting, but due to multiple unprofessional issues with the guides. Key problems I've experienced include guides arriving late to the meeting point, a lack of basic familiarity with the lake, and smoking on the boat. On our most recent trip with guide Fred Palermo, he took over an hour to reach the fishing spot. In a standard boat with a 15-horsepower motor, the same distance should have taken no more than 30 minutes. It was obvious he was deliberately stalling to eat into my paid time. At this price point, customers deserve punctual, knowledgeable, and professional service. I will not be returning and cannot recommend this shop for guided trips.

I'm sorry to have read the other reviews that were negative. I had the exact opposite experience…read more Jay was a really great guy--he was very accessible and helpful. His family was there for the summer to help out, and they were so kind and friendly--very personable. This is a family-operated cabin "campsite" that is perfect for a great blend of comfort and "roughing it." The amenities are basicallly this: beds/bunks to sack out it, gorgeous lakes to fish in, a boat that comes with the cabin rental (motor not included), TV, community fire pit, full kitchen, and bathrooms :) nothing fancy like indoor pools or high-speed internet--it's a great place to get out and just enjoy pure nature! I feel so refreshed after staying here...ahhh... There are paddle boats and skis to use. My dog was welcome; in fact, there were a few camp dogs that belonged to the family--all very friendly and trained. The cabins are all set up close to each other, far enough to be private, but close enough to feel like a friendly community. Be prepared to get to know the other guests--it seems like those who go to Jay's are all super-friendly people who love and respect nature. Word of advice: take your own towels for showering and cleaning, and (if you go in the summer) take bug spray and sunscreen! The office sells ice and s'mores fixings, bug spray and sunscreen, and fish bait. They also have TONS of board games to borrow while you stay. *We stayed in cabin 9.

Great little resort, we had a blast there. Fun for kids, great for fishing, reasonably priced boat…read morerentals and beautiful surroundings. Be sure to bring towels, toiletries and toilet paper. Laundry room onsite, as well as a sauna. Plenty of things to do nearby, as well, but we were perfectly content staying at the resort all week. Did our sightseeing by boat or kayaking. The resort owners were great, too, very nice people. ***UPDATE:*** One of resort owners, Becky, called my brother the evening after we left. She demanded a cleaning fee, because the place was a mess. Took them 2 whole hours to clean a 3 story cabin. I was among the last to leave, and know what the place looked like. All dishes were done, kitchen was cleaned up and swept. The way Becky put it, one would think we'd staged a food fight in there on the final morning. We left a few unopened packaged food items, and some produce on the kitchen table, as they wouldn't fit in the car. And, I forgot to dispose of a carton of eggs and some opened milk that was left in the fridge....as well as a six pack of beer. In any case, now I have a bad taste in my mouth. Seems like a money grabbing ploy to me. Luckily there are many other places to stay on the Cisco Chain, because we loved the area
