I have a boy in Primary and a girl in Lower Elementary and so far, I couldn't be happier. We've…read moreattended other montessori schools before, as well as non-montessori public and private with my other kids, so I have a pretty wide scale of comparison. The kids are HAPPY - and that is the most important thing you can ask for! They are excited to go to school in the morning and happy to share what they are learning. They are, in comparison to their non-montessori peers very advanced both socially and academically, a lot more verbal and definitely way more independent. Time will tell how they will compare to their peers when they enter high-school, but if your child's need are not being met in this school - it is time to rethink your strategy. Both the Montessori education model and MSD teachers stress the importance of individualized curriculum and approaches to learning, so if your child is especially gifted, dyslexic or average, he or she will not feel any different, yet be learning at their highest potential. The community has been great so far as well - no one is cliquy, no one is cold (like some claimed) - it feels like a very welcoming environment to all - and I have met parents from different walks of life, different ages, economical status or upbringing. Kids have playground time together with other classes and already make friends school-wide :) And - I have to share this - me being me - when I see something wrong, even if tiny, I say it out loud and try to get it fixed. In all the previous schools my complaints would hit the wall of no response or 'thank you for your opinion but we will continue as we see fit' type of a response. For the first time (and my oldest is in college!) I have received a 'Thank you, you might be right' and 'How would you suggest we fix it' type of response! Taking feedback and constructive criticism has been something I've always thought just does not happen in school administration! I am so very excited (and proud!) to be a part of the MSD community!

Our 2 year old son is blossoming at Sunflower Hill. We are so impressed by Kathy's intuition and…read morededication to helping toddlers and preschoolers thrive. She truly gets young children, in a way I have not seen before in a day care center. I have seen Kathy and her staff respond to toy stealing, tantrums, hitting, and other normal behaviors of young children with immense patience and gentleness. Kathy and her staff truly seek to understand and come alongside children, not boss them around or control them. The kids spend a large portion of the day outside, in this beautiful fenced-in property in a safe and vibrant neighborhood. It is tranquil and calm both inside and outside Sunflower Hill. My son enjoys daily circle time, songs and books, and crafts (they even bake bread and plant flowers with the kids). "Squirrel Nutkin" comes alive from the book they read, and munches on sunflower seeds outside the center. We have attended a few of Sunflower Hill's festivals, which are a great opportunity to meet parents and watch your kids thrive together. The lantern festival was a time to pause and reflect on the darkening of the seasons, and how the light is inside each of us. The kids each made a lantern and we walked around outside singing songs. It truly is as magical as it sounds. Kathy and her staff have a holistic approach to childcare, which isn't what all families are looking for. The "curriculum" is not structured or rigid, like many schools are. Each family should choose what works best for their child, and Waldorf isn't a good fit for everyone. Kathy provides flexibility in choosing days of the week, and the opportunity to re-arrange your days if needed. We looked at several child care centers in Denver, and Sunflower Hill has very reasonable pricing. They are open long hours, and it is a very convenient pick for working parents. Also, the center is housed on a sleepy neighborhood street without traffic, so you don't have to fight to find a parking spot. Pickup and dropoff are always easy. When we started at Sunflower Hill, Kathy would send us photos of our son and encouraging notes about how he was acclimating to the group. Kathy always texts me if our son is hurt (a self-inflicted scratch while playing with sticks, and a toy sharing incident that turned into hitting), and sends us photos of him with an update. I am so impressed by this attention to my child's safety, and trust Kathy immensely. Kathy has asked for feedback from parents in several of her weekly emails, and shows genuine humility and a desire to continue changing and adapting as needed. Though I don't pretend to know half as much about raising young children as Kathy, I wouldn't hesitate to speak to her if I had any concerns. The staff are fantastic, our son especially loves Warren who sings cowboy songs to him and is so attentive to his language development. We are overjoyed that our son is blossoming here. He comes home from school each day chatting about his friends, and has started pretend play at just over 2 years old, which speaks to how healthy and supportive this center is for his imagination.

Larks Preschool - Bridget Federico Owner/Director Larks Preschool

Larks Preschool

Writing this a former full time employee/current on call substitute…read more.. My journey at Larks began when I was working for an early childhood substitute teaching company. Eventually the owner Bridget recruited me from the company and hired me full time. I have been in early childhood education for well over a decade now, I have seen a lot of schools: the good, the bad and the ugly! Larks Preschool is an absolute gem, both for its employees and the children attending. It is a small and intimate setting- just one classroom in an adorable one bedroom house that Bridget and her husband converted into a preschool. At most Bridget employs 3 teachers (outside of herself- so 4 total). And the max capacity is 20 children- so the ratio is a dream! And she does not hesitate to book a substitute when needed. At larger places that I have worked at, everyday we had to shift kids around or combine classes, it was stressful for the kids and the teachers. Not a thing at Larks! Also, I have loved not having to constantly stay late, deal with constantly being short staffed, or battle black out dates for my time off, or attend unpaid weekend trainings, ugh! I could go on, but back to Larks The routine is perfect for the children: consistent, well thought out and easy to follow. The layout of the house flows very well with the routine. The day is fairly short, 8am to 3:30pm, and many children only attend for a half day (leave at 12:30pm). The afternoons are quieter- such a nice way to end the day. Bridget is very rigid in her safety protocols and following licensing requirements, but I honestly very much appreciate it after some of the incidents I have witnessed at larger schools and corporate daycare centers. And you have a nice 30 minute time block for prepping for the day- the children don't arrive until 8:30am. Bridget has always been very understanding and flexible with time off with me. She has a lot of empathy around emergencies and life's upsets- not something I have come across often in a boss. There are also a lot of built in breaks. The school follows the DPS schedule and honors their snow days as well. Summer is shorter but still a good chunk of time- more than enough for a nice reset. Larks also has a wonderful SLP who visits several times a month and provides feedback to both us teachers and to parents- so helpful! It is rarely stressful at Larks and just makes for a really fun day- a breath of fresh air especially of you have been in the ECE game for a while. It is Reggio based and is a mixed age group (2.5 to 6 years). Bridget is a big advocate for play based learning, allowing children the opportunity to teach each other and she really emphasizes the importance of language and speech development- I have learned so much from her and my time at Larks. Her experience shows in how well her school functions. A lot of places I have worked I felt like I was much more reactive in my teaching and "putting out fires" all day, so to speak. At Larks, I have learned more preventative strategies and just to slow down and be much more intentional in my interactions. I cannot emphasize how grateful I am for how much I have learned at Larks. I have shared this with Bridget, but she and her school renewed my love for teaching and early childhood development. I was on the edge of completely burning out and considering a drastic career change when I started working at Larks and am truly forever grateful. Again, such a gem! And the families that attend are wonderful and it is in such a great neighborhood- really nice place to go on walks for your lunch break! And younger siblings usually end up attending which is so fun to see. Families often keep in touch for years afterward and reach out to Bridget for feedback and for advisement in their child rearing and school selections, it is very sweet. It is a beautiful place! 10/10 would highly recommend! A great place to start your career in ECE as Bridget, Rachel and Kim are all highly experienced- wish I would have found it much sooner! But also a wonderful place to go if you are just burnt out/underpaid and wanting to rediscover the joys in teaching young children.

Would give zero stars if possible. This school's style of fitting children into boxes is harmful…read more(especially for young boys). Had to transfer our son who is flourishing elsewhere.

We love everything about Plum Hill! The staff are friendly and educated. The "feel" of the school is very calm, clean and organized. We love the philosophy behind the school which is a mixture of the best parts of Waldorf, Reggio and play based. They understand the importance of unstructured play and facilitate learning based on what the children show interest in. The children go outside to play and visit the two goats Poppy and Pearl daily. The teachers seem very in tune with what is typical developmental behavior and deal with behaviors with loving redirection (we are in the youngest class). I also love the mostly wood toys instead of plastic toys that sing and flash. I really can't say enough about how happy we are with the school. My two kiddos run into school each morning and lovingly hug each teacher at the end of every day. I feel confident that they are happy and safe while they are there. I would highly recommend!
