1/10/23 Update. Heather, you did exactly what I asked you not to: comment on my review, get defensive and double down on how it's ok you treated me terribly, blaming me, even though you said you wouldn't care about a negative review. And passive aggressive statements like you're sorry to hear about my experience (that you caused and took no accountability for) and have a wonderful day? I had a horrible day because of you and was crying when I got home because of how hurt I was. You said my "behavior" during my "service" led to me "needing to leave." There was no service, I was there under 5 minutes! I didn't need to leave. I chose to leave when you said I had to change how I talk to get my hair cut. Your justification that I made "your clientele uncomfortable" doesn't make sense as there was only one other customer in the tiny shared salon suite, not your client. Using the word "erratic" is dramatic, ridiculous, and insulting, and I honestly have no idea what I could have done that could be characterized like that. You're being judgmental and unkind, and showing how very little tolerance you have for people who are different from you. It's honestly sad and will hurt your business in the long run.
Original 12/20/22. Absolutely horrible experience with Heather Murdock. Worst salon experience I've ever had and I was only there less than five minutes. I've been going to hair salons my entire life in many different cities, and I've never experienced such judgment and such a rejecting, hurtful attitude from a stylist. She literally told me I should leave if I didn't fix my "attitude." We barely spoke so I'm confused and extremely disappointed that someone would judge me so harshly and incorrectly, and I'm not even sure why. I didn't think anything had happened that was out of the ordinary, and it had been only a few minutes. All that happened was I got there, told her what I wanted for my hair cut, and she told me not to bleach my hair anymore. I wasn't there to get it colored or seeking color correction advice, so it was odd to me that she brought that up. I tried to explain why I had been bleaching it and the struggles I've had with my extremely color resistant gray hair, and that I'm likely not going to stop bleaching it. She kept insisting even though I wasn't asking for her advice. I don't know why she kept pressuring me.
It made me uncomfortable to have someone I don't know tell me that she knows what's best for my hair and not respect my decisions about what to do with it. She said she was just giving me her "professional opinion." Ok, but I don't agree with her opinion. It's not a big deal, and it has no impact on anything she would be doing for the hair cut, which was only going to be a trim. She seemed extremely uncomfortable with someone saying they would not follow her instructions about their hair. I tried to ignore that and just get going with the hair cut because I needed one. She said we'd wash and trim it, and I asked about whether she cuts hair dry or wet. She said we could do either, so I said it's fine to do it the way she normally does, washing it first. It's not that important to me, so I kept saying it's fine and walked over to the bowls where they wash the hair.
That's when she told me to leave if I didn't change my attitude. I was shocked and extremely confused, and it was very easy for me to walk away. There are many, many stylists in the area, and there is absolutely no reason to spend money or any more time with such a judgmental person. Before I left I asked what she meant by "attitude" because I was so surprised. She said it's my "tone of voice"! Um, this is how I talk, and I'm not going to turn into a different person just to get a hair cut! Telling a potential client to change the way they talk to even be present in your small salon suite is outrageous, hurtful, judgmental, condescending, and shows an extreme lack of empathy and compassion. She has no idea what I've been going through in my life or what kind of person I am. Or what factors in my culture or background cause me to talk the way I do. She immediately jumped to negative conclusions and blamed me for her own discomfort.
And if she thinks just my actual voice is offensive (or if it was actually related to me not taking her coloring advice), then she has a very low threshold for tolerating diversity of opinion and communication style. I can't imagine how she would react if someone came in who was from a culture or background that is even more different from hers. I'm assuming she'd kick them out even faster. Good thing it's extremely easy to find another stylist. Don't waste your time or money on her. Also, when I said I'd write a bad Yelp review about this experience, she said that's fine, and that she doesn't care if I do so. Ok then, Heather, do not comment on this review, getting defensive or doubling down on how it's ok that you treated me so horribly, and blaming me for it all. It will only prove my point. read more
