They listened to our vision, respected our play/do not play list, and put all the details together to create a seamless evening that we didn't have to worry about for a second. They came highly recommended from friends of ours as well as provided DJ services at my sister's wedding two years ago where they also did not disappoint (the dance floor was never once even close to being empty, and the bride and groom were happy to hear every song they asked for played). For our wedding, we used SBD's DJ service, lighting, and photo booth, and each service made for an impeccable night. The lighting was perfectly placed to showcase the cream city brick in The Pritzlaff. The photo booth was a hit with everyone--young and old. We got to take a photo booth album home with us the very same night, complete with notes from guests, which allowed us to capture some of the funny/sweet moments that happened after the photographer left for the night. Our DJ, Nathan Moore, was so on top of every last detail both in our meetings and emails leading up to the event and in coordinating the logistics on the day of. He really listened to and understand our taste in music and played all of the songs we wanted to hear, while also paying attention to the crowd at the moment when discerning which song to play. We both highly recommend Sound By Design for any event that requires any of the services they provide. We had to wait more than four weeks to get an appointment at a time that worked for our work schedules, though Dylan was very friendly and personable. He asked questions that were more than just the surface queries about music styles and the venue, and we enjoyed the meeting. Having met with other DJs previously, Sound By Design came in a bit higher than the other quotes, but we really liked the overall vibe. We asked if they could match the price of our other leading vendor and received no reply. At all. I fully expected to hear that they don't negotiate their prices insert generic policy language here, I did not expect to be ghosted by the company like a bad Tinder date. For argument's sake, let's say that the interwebs failed and they did not receive the email in which we inquired about negotiating on the price. In that scenario, wouldn't Dylan have reached out after not hearing from us? His line of questioning had us with the impression that the personal connection was important to Sound By Design, but I fear that is just lip service. In the end I went two stars since their lack of answer made a potentially difficult choice that much easier.

Not only was she focused on making sure that she took pictures of everything she thought we would want documented, but she was so open and flexible with making sure that we always got the pictures that WE wanted as well. She never once said no to taking a picture and was always willing to do what we asked. She really understands that even though her job is to document the details of the whole day, what also matters is what the couple wants documented throughout the day. She worked with us at every turn to make our day special. She always wanted to make sure that we were comfortable and on board with every idea she had that wasn't scheduled in to the day. Furthermore, she always asked our permission if she had an idea that wasn't previously discussed, and that level of kindness couldn't be replicated in another photographer. We originally chose to go with Laurelyn because of her unique, light, and beautiful style. You can tell that she works incredibly hard to make sure that each day feels special and unique. She is obviously incredibly talented and her skills can't be overlooked. We have gotten so many compliments on just our preview pictures!! She's a truly kind person and will work so hard to make your day special and as easy as possible. Our wedding-planning process had several unique aspects: a) enormous family size (over 300 people on the groom's side!) b) multi-cultural ceremonies -- i.e. Indian & Persian-American c) different cities -- one family wedding in Chicago. one with our close friends in San Diego. Overall, we ended up having MULTIPLE wedding ceremonies and receptions and we hired Laurelyn for all of our events, including our engagement photo shoot. Prior to the first event, we sent Laurelyn examples of the look we were hoping for, and she was spot-on! Our engagement shoot and wedding photos (for all events) looked PERFECT... they had the exact urban/rustic look we desired. Laurelyn and her assistant also did a perfect job following our timeline (making sure we took photos with everyone), but also carefully took the time to ensure that our final photo assortment had a very candid feel, and were not overly "pose-y". Laurelyn was extremely professional throughout the wedding planning process. She was super-responsive to email, and spent time to get to know us as a couple to learn our vision for our big day. She also did not charge for cross-country travel for the wedding and even brought in an extra assistant free of charge to make sure the day went by smoothly. I needed an updated headshot for my company website. I called a few places on Yelp and decided to…read moremake an appointment at The Refinery Studio after having a conversation with Jessica. Her passion for photography really came through over the phone. In addition, she seemed very easy going and personable -- which I appreciated because for me, getting my picture taken is about as much fun as going to the dentist. Prior to my appointment, Jessica sent me a contract to sign digitally. My company lawyer asked for a revision to one of the clauses in the contract for privacy purposes, which Jessica was willing to accommodate. On the day of my appointment, I was 30 minutes late due to traffic + construction so I was a bit out of sorts by the time I arrived. However, Jessica immediately put me at ease. Before we started the photo shoot, she took the time to pin my shirt and tape it to my blazer to ensure a crisp, clean look in the photos. She also fixed my hair (I have long hair with beach curls) to ensure it was lying well against my blazer. Needless to say Jessica has an insanely good eye for detail. Before the photo shoot, we also discussed what type of lighting we should use (studio vs. natural). She recommended natural lighting because of the current studio conditions but I requested studio lighting because I thought the sunlight would be less forgiving. After taking a few photos using studio lighting, she recommended we try a few using natural light. She then brought her camera over and showed me the difference in the output between the two lighting styles. She was completely right about my photos looking better using natural lighting! The difference was astonishing actually. Trust her judgment people because it will save you time and you'll get a much better result. Not only is Jessica massively talented (the headshots turned out amazing), she also made the entire experience so much fun. I went into Jessica's studio a nervous wreck and came out laughing and feeling like I just visited a good friend. Jessica is truly one of a kind!

I was able to book several weeks in advance and lock in a time for an outside shoot. In terms of the studio, the place is very cozy and the "dressing room" area even features R+Co Hair Products which are awesome! Jessica is an excellent photographer and the outside session has fun and nicely paced. Afterwards, we went back up to choose the ones I'd like to keep and have as final products. In under two weeks, I got the link to my gallery and I am quite happy with the array of finalized images. I highly recommend the work of Jessica and Ryan.

We were guests at Nick and Meredith's Wedding on 8/29/2026. The wedding service was nice, but it…read morerained and there should have been a backup plan. We could not see the couple because all of the umbrellas were in our way. I think the staff could have moved the chairs into the reception tent? The reception was first class and the food was top notch. The service from the staff was excellent, and they were even checking and cleaning the bathrooms. The DJ was a problem and didn't know what dinner music was or at what volume it should be. We could not comfortably talk to relatives we had not seen in years. The reception then moved out to the tent and once again the DJ was a problem. Way too loud and all the same dance mix beat. One guest's smart watch went off for dangerous noise decibel levels. Slow songs were requested for the older crowd, but were never played. We left with head aches at about 9:30pm. Top notch venue, but the DJ spoiled it for us. Would have been 5 stars!!

This DJ should only stick to doing small events and photography. The DJ timeline took the whole night. After all the speeches, special dances, the bouquet and garter toss, it was 9:30pm, which only gave guest roughly an hour and a half to dance. The event started at 4pm and ended at 11pm. (Due to venue hours we had to be out at midnight) I don't know what was in the contract between the DJ and the bride but its common sense and the DJ is still getting paid for whatever hours were in the contract. The DJ would not coroporate with wedding coordinator. Got the names wrong druing line up for the Grand March but the wedding party quickly adjusted and lined up for her. Was asked and told to do speeches during appetizers, she waited till after dinner to do everything, speeches, special dances, bouquet and garter toss. Which took up alot of dance time for guest. There was a little mishap with the sand ceremony at the church so the couple moved the sand ceremony part to the reception.(which worked out great) But then DJ the basically outted the coordinator in front of all the guest! You don't do that, the guest did not need to know about anything that happens behind the scene. Then during the sand ceremony the mic cuts out on the officiant. The DJ didn't announce cake cutting when the coordinator asked her to and when she did announce the cake cutting, it was already over. Then again towards the end of the night when cake was being served, no announcement until after guest realized cake was being served. As the MOH and BM were giving their speeches the mic feedback twice.Then being the professional she claims to be, took it upon herself to give a speech to the newlyweds after everyone else gave their speeches. Just because you personally know the couple doesn't give you a right to do that. Alot of the guest where confused to why she was giving a speech too. That's something you do off to the side, you were at the wedding to DJ not a guest. Made a inappropriate comment during the father daughter dance and both mother son dances, that made guest uncomfortable and awkward. For example "give your dad a big old kiss" The DJ tried to be energetic and entertaining but failed, some people have that ability and some people don't. The generation dance was way to long. It took 4 songs to get through the generation dance. Druing the dance a few couple just ended up standing there on the floor because dancing in a circle gets tiring. Then a few of the guest watching were getting bored after the second song. The DJ was asked and told by three people, after the current song ends, you need to stop playing music. Since we had to be out of the bulidng at midnight, it was 11:15. She didn't stop till 11:45 and by the time we got done cleaning, she was just then packing up her equipment, she didn't leave till 12:09am. (Which wasn't a lot of time wasted but still) Around 10:55pm one of the bridesmaid told the DJ after the current song is over time to stop the music. Then the DJ told the bridemaid, well I am doing to do what the bride wants me to do. Two things wrong with that, one, why would you play music, when we had to be out at midnight and majority of the guest are gone. Tables were flipped, linen was folded, chairs were moved and trash was taken out. Second, just because the bride hired this DJ, doesn't give the DJ justice to keep playing, she had a coordinator and help for a reason, so she didn't have to deal with this kind of stuff. So the bridesmaid explained to the bride what was going on and what we still had to do, so she could tell the DJ basically shut it down so we could get the rest of the guest out and continue with clean up (rolling tables across the room) The DJ tells the bride the she is gonna play till 11:30pm, so then we told the coordinator and the bartender over heard us and the bartender took it up pond herself to tell the DJ to stop and that was. I am not saying she is horrible but could use a lot of improvements.
