That said, with hundreds of restaurants in Vienna making the same traditional Austrian cuisine, Schutzhaus doesn't stand out. Everything I had there was tasty, seasoned and cooked properly but it needed that extra something to make this place really memorable. Here is what I had the opportunity to taste: - Filet steak with mashed potatoes, white asparagus and hollandaise sauce. Let's start with the sauce, because that really was a 5 star excellent hollandaise sauce. The steak (especially for a filet, which has the lowest fat content of all steaks) was overcooked, on an extremely small side and at times, I questioned if it was a filet at all (probably an end piece). The mashed potatoes were good. All things considered, a 3 star dish. - Ham, cream and wild garlic pasta squares (Schinkenfleckerl) - 4 stars. Very good, creamy, just what you'd expect this dish to taste. A good comfort food dish. - Asparagus soup - well done, 4 stars. A little on the runnier and less creamy side, which I thought was a good thing since it made the soup a perfect, light spring time dish. - Schnitzel (both pork and chicken) - nothing to write home about. There are so many places that do the traditional Wienerschnitzel better. - Asparagus risotto - 5 stars. The only truly memorable dish. Creamy, not too heavy and al dente. - Salads - overall 4 stars, well seasoned and properly dressed. If you live in Vienna (or are here for a long visit) you should give Schutzhaus a try, otherwise, there are a lot of restaurants with nice outdoor seating all over this town.

Because let's see, both husband and I love the whole flair, and will go there happily anytime someone mentions the word Schutzhaus. The casual approach of their quite pretty staff, who all look as a group of friends playing waiters and barkeepers as a side job because they had time that evening, is as refreshing as those lovely seasonal Prosecco creations involving fruits from own garden they always offer as aperitif. The white "Landhaus" furnishing with cute details, and the fire place - all incredibly cosy. Sitting outside in the summer in the thick shade of trees, wow, one of the nicest places to do so in Vienna. And then I came to a conclusion it is the menu. It changes seasonally which is great. However, there is always the same pattern. It is the menu that doesn't reflect the rest of the flair of this place, mainly determined by its lovely staff: young, international, relaxed, informal. It is a menu which you can find in a cook book you bought once because it was written by a well-known cook and it was on sale in Thalia, so it seemed very legitimate... but you will never ever try to make any of the recipes at home. It will collect dust because it will not inspire you. There is no fusion. It is just what it is, well-prepared, at times excellent, straightforward food made by a very good professional chef. And that is when I usually have troubles selecting a light, and above all exciting dinner. It is probably meant to suit the traditional taste of the surrounding neighbourhoods, and it is just me who is having false expectations based on the vibes of this place. Good news: you can fill as many lists as you want, and order over and over again! (except for the fresh fruit juice: it's only one per person). There's a smoking room which meant we could enjoy our meal without being bothered by smoke. Our waitress was really friendly and helpful and the second she realised we were English she produced English menus and began talking us through all the options. I went for Wiener Schnitzel, Sparky went for Goulash which - on her recommendation - came "Viennese style" with the dumplings cut into slices and with a side of sausage and a fried egg. It's in the attractive Pötzleinsdorf neighborhood of Vienna at the end of the Pötzleinsdorfer Schloss Park. This rustic culinary institution (founded in 1917) is fairly easy to find and well worth it. In winter it is a warm outpost when the world around it is clothed in white. In summer it can be a welcome stop on a hike in the Vienna Woods. And that is important to know. Though the food is quite good here and nicely highlights the cuisine of the Steirmark, it is also definitely not cheap to eat here. But you can also just enjoy some great Styrian wine in their outdoor garden before completing your hike and returning to the city. Anyway, if you're living in Vienna, learn where the Steirerstöckl is as there is not really another eating & drinking establishment that close to it. You never know when you might be in the Pötzleinsdorf neighborhood or surrounding Vienna Woods!
