Monthly Special - firecracker pressed roll
Alexis T.

Located in the historical Exchange District of the city, this cozy gem found it's way into my heart. I never really considered myself to be a sushi connoisseur, but I do know what I like, and when it comes to Blufish.... I LOVE! Upon opening the main doors of the building, you are given an option to climb stairs to a hair salon or turn right and reach the landing welcomed by a BluFish "This Month's Special" board. Another door opens to reveal the restaurant's character by the feature brick wall which leads to a wall of windows that looks onto the Bannatyne Ave. The decor, dimmed lighting with tea-lights placed on your table, creates a nice, warm, comfortable dining atmosphere. There is a small bar with seating and tables that sit two to four people but can be moved to accommodate a larger party. :) At the back you will find fresh seafood sprawled out behind a glass window with the Itamae (aka Sushi Chef) busy at work making the next masterpiece. NOW...Trying not to salivate all over the menu, we came to a decision to share a few appetizers as we sipped our green tea (Steeped in individual teapots, I might add): - Tuna Gomae (Large cubed maguro and avocado tossed in an aromatic goma-ae dressing sprinkled with black sesame seeds) The best I have ever had! - Agedashi Tofu (Golden fried tofu topped with finely sliced green onion served with a sweet tempura sauce) Oishii!! - Pink Tuna and Salmon Sashimi (My choice, as I have a dedicated relationship with Sashimi). Thick and succulent slices of fish with a side of stringed diakon adorned on a decorative plate) Once we had finished with our first food-gasm we decided on our main rolls. Being here many times before, I can account that every roll I have tried has always made me leaving a happy woman caring for her new food baby. But there is always my favorites that I order: - Green roll (Crispy warm shrimp tempura, kanpyo, avocado, cucumber, tamago, and plum mayo wrapped in a soy crepe) The soy crepe is thin and melts in your mouth allowing for all the other flavors to unite deliciously on your tongue, with the lingering sweetness from the plum mayo drizzle. - Rainbow Roll (Colorful California roll topped with tuna, salmon, squid, shrimp, surf clam, and avocado) When it comes to me and sushi, the more raw fish the better! This fits the bill. Both having undone our belts and busting at the seams, we declined desert THIS TIME. But when there is a slight vacancy, I like to end my wonderous experience here with the Chocolate Molten Lava Cake with a scoop of Green Tea or Red Bean ice cream! Now, the price is a little on the expensive side than other places in the city, but the with the prompt, friendly service, quality of the fish, the presentation and size of the rolls, it's worth it! It's also wise to make reservations for evenings and weekends as it tends to get busy... but not crowded. :) I highly recommend BluFish Japanese Restaurant for your next Sushi experience where they don't just make sushi, they make art!

Yam Tempura at Blufish, Winnipeg

I have been to a number of sushi restaurants in the city. Blufish is by far one of my favourite ones of all! Blufish is known for their specialty rolls. It's also known to be the most expensive Japanese restaurant in the City for years. At my visit, we ordered 12 different rolls, two appetizers, a Bento box and two different types of desserts so we got to try a bit of everything. Blufish did an excellent job with the presentation. They used high quality ingredients for the sushi, which we were very pleased with. The sushi was very good. Some of my favourite rolls were the Bannatyne Roll, Dragon Roll and Lobster Roll. For the Teriyaki Beef dinner, the flavour of the beef was alright so I probably wouldn't get that again. For dessert, we had the chocolate lava cake and tempura banana with mango and green tea ice cream. I really enjoyed the banana tempura dessert. The batter was light and crispy and it wasn't greasy at all even though it was deep fried. Overall, we had a positive experience at Blufish and we would highly recommend it for special occasions! If you go there for your birthday, you'll get a free chocolate lava cake!

Very tasty sushi!

I think that Blufish is the best sushi you can get in Winnipeg. Everything is fresh and delicious. I'll definitely return to Blufish.

GaiJin Izakaya - Cross-section of my gyoza

Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse was the most popular Japanese restaurant then. It didn't and continues to not have ramen on its menu. Sushi restaurants were starting to bud in the city back then. On my first day in Winnipeg earlier this month, I wanted to grab dinner before driving to Steinbach. Since I had never had ramen at a restaurant in Winnipeg, I did a search and found GaiJin Izakaya. I said yes and drove over to this eatery. This restaurant is located in a plaza. There was plenty of parking when I had arrived. I parked and walked in. I was immediately greeted by a woman. I asked if I could get a table. She led me to a booth. I'm glad that I beat the dinner rush, as she asked other customers after me whether they had a reservation. There was a QR code on the table. You scan it to access the menu. The drink menu was there on the table. It was also online. I got these items: - Diet Coke - Gyoza - Miso ramen (bamboo shoots held) - Black sesame ice cream I added gyoza for $5 to make my miso ramen a combo. I recommend it, as gyoza as an appetizer on its own is $14.50. My miso ramen came with miso broth that contained both pork and chicken flavours. This dish featured chashu, wakame, bamboo shoots, green onions, and a marinated egg. I asked if I could get the bamboo shoots held. Done! My Diet Coke came out first. I got a glass with ice. I appreciated that gesture. I poured my beverage into the glass, which made my drink nicely cold and refreshing on a hot summer day. My gyoza came out next. The filling was pork and it was delicious. Each gyoza was flavourful and perfectly fried. They were crispy and yummy. My bowl of miso ramen came out next. I was excited. The best move that this eatery does is to separate the roasted seaweed from the broth. Most eateries dunk the sheets of seaweed in the ramen and you end up eating soggy, flabby seaweed sheets. I appreciated this detail. I had a bit of roasted seaweed left and put it off to the side on a plate so it wouldn't get soggy. My server was super effective clearing items off my table. She was about to clear my plate with the seaweed on it. I asked her to hold off, so I could grab my seaweed. I can't let that go to waste. I loved it. I was also paying for good roasted seaweed. The miso ramen here is exceptional. You can tell if the broth doesn't excite me if I don't consume the entire thing. I did here. The combination of pork and chicken broth with miso was tasty and brilliant. It was wonderful. I'm drooling. The ramen was bouncy and had the perfect chew. The slices of chashu were thick and tender. It had good flavour and I enjoyed the balance between the fat and the protein. I normally get corn, but completely forgot to order some. Oops! I was content with the green onions, wakame, and jammy, marinated egg. They pulled everything together to make this miso ramen so special and comforting. I was ready for dessert. I asked what ice cream flavours were available. There was matcha and black sesame. I chose the latter. I don't have black sesame ice cream often. It was so creamy and had a delightful nutty flavour to it. It was the perfect ending to this meal. My server was attentive. She got me the bill. I let her know that everything was fabulous. She was delighted. I paid with a credit card and tipped. I tapped and I was done. I used the washroom before I made the brief trip eastbound to Steinbach. It was clean. No complaints. I got melon candy as a parting gift. I loved it. It's always a favourite of mine. This eatery is a gem for delicious, authentic ramen and gyoza. Come here! This place also offers sushi rolls, baos, and more. I'd love to return and try other items on the menu. However, I feel that I'll be back for more ramen. Priorities! (250)

Their ramen is excellent -- rich, flavourful broth and thick, tender cuts of char siu that melt in your mouth. The menu is huge, offering tons of variety beyond just ramen, so there's something for everyone no matter what you're craving. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes you get, and the service is fast, friendly, and efficient. The interior is clean and modern, with tidy tables and a welcoming vibe that makes you want to stay awhile. It's rare to find a spot that nails both quality and value, but GaiJin Izakaya does exactly that. Easily one of Winnipeg's best-kept secrets -- this place deserves way more recognition.

Despite the lack of a business sign, there was crazy fanfare while dining here for lunch today. I had to wait about 30 minutes for a table, and unfortunately with the demand here you may have to wait outside. They don't have a system yet where they could call/text you to know when your table's ready. There was a bit of a fantasy theme with the menus here, as some of the items make you think of role playing games like Runescape or League of Legends. Even their website screams fairy tale/fantasy/video game themed. I had The Oak Ramen, which consisted of pork and chicken based kale milk soup, pork katsu, egg, dill, corn, wood ear mushroom, leek, onion flakes, black garlic oil, and sesame. This is one of the most unique bowls of ramen I've had, it's a diversion from your traditional chashu ramen. Their bowl is gigantic, though their portion sizes are only average to above average. You have a choice between their traditional ramen or thinner-style ramen, but I suggest traditional here. I can say in terms of the noodles, this is the best in the city. However I found the pork katsu didn't really fit in with the ramen; I would've preferred chashu for sure. I also had a Sylph matcha milkshake. I liked it, though $10 is slightly steep in my opinion. Service was a bit disorganized, and they need a numbering system if the demand they have for this place holds, because there were way too many people crowding the entrance. Hopefully they'll solve that eventually. Isekai is definitely now the best ramen place in the city. I'm sure they'll solve their teething issues with service and organization.
