Marina 2 days after the surgery
Sona K.

I am reposting my review as it somehow posted separately from my Yelp account, and I would like my network to know of this clinic. THANK YOU, Dr. Alderman and her staff. My fur baby, Marina (12years old), had bad teeth: loose and partially chipped ones. We first went to the primary doc who assessed that Marina would need a cardiology exam to determine the dental procedure. Due to her stage 2 heart murmur, we were asked to see a vetenarian dentist. Not only did the doc we found were not AVDC certified dentists, but her estimate was huge. Consulting with a friend who is a retired vetenarian, she insisted that I must see a certified animal dentist as there is a great difference between specialist dentist vs. AVDC certified dentist. Since I am familiar with UT, I checked the Salt Lake area and found Dr. Alterman at Bluepearl in Midvale. I made the appointment:first visit and surgery date since the treatment was a must. The reservation process was easy as we made it a month ahead. What I also loved abt the clinic, they were so reasonable and did not insist on doing repetitive exams like the other clinic did. Dr. Alterman reviewed all the reports from my primary vet as well as cardiologyvreport. We all agreed that the extraction was a must but agreed that there would be unknown findings and additional treatment may be needed. Today, I dropped off Marina close to 9 am. Later in the morning, I got a call from the doc, and the x ray result showed worse condition of Marina's teeth than we expected. Marina was diagnosed with periodontal disease, tooth restoration, nonvital tooth, and uncomplicated crown-root fracture. She ended up with 18 teeth removal. Each step of the procedure, Dr. Alterman explained it to me, and I am so grateful. The discharge process was very well explained. Her assistant went over all in detail. I am so grateful and thankful to the doc and her staff. Thank you. The clinic itself is very clean, spacious, and quiet. The front desk staff were were friendly and professional. I can't say enough! I highly recommend BluePearl clinic for anyone that needs excellent service and competent docs. Sending my big THANks again.

My senior kitty had stopped eating, was vomiting and overall not himself. I thought he had a blockage, but turns out his kidney disease progressed to kidney/renal failure within a matter of days. The vet went through all the options and in the end we agreed letting him go peacefully was the best thing to do. It's never an easy decision to make and one I wasn't expecting to make then. The staff was wonderful. Friendly, caring and compassionate.

I woke up the other morning with a really sick cat. The closest emergency vet office is the Blue Pearl in Midvale. From the moment I walked in their door my cat and I were treated with kindness and empathy. Even though I had to go home with an empty pet carrier. I really appreciated their sensitivity to my situation. I will never forget how the staff helped me get through a really difficult decision.

Sormy got nipped on his year and they were able to remove the fluid buildup!! Quick helpful service!

Results did not necessarily say cancer but the vet did not want to rule it out and let me worry. They were ready for surgery and to send the mass out for testing. I called around, and set an appointment with Canyons because the front desk workers. They just seemed real and very personable. Even though it was a couple days out I felt this place maybe worth the wait. They kept their appointment, and I did not have to wait. I love this aspect because my dog hated vets. The vet looked over and saw the bump. She asked if I just got vaccinated. "Yes, a couple of weeks ago." She didn't want to go any further than that until a couple months if bump did not resolve. She felt confident and knew exactly what it was given the location of a rabies vax. I explained to the doctor at canyons what my other vet said. And ask for the pricing for comparison. Canyons came in cheaper in everything. I was in and out and back home within a half hour with just a simple small office visit. My old fired vet was over an hour and 200 dollars for testing. And wanted to book surgery. Said she was giving me the "gold standard" . It turned out to be the worst advice. Dog's lump is now gone. And Canyons saved me over 1000 dollars. I can now spend this money to get his teeth cleaned. Instead of wasting money on getting a vaccine bump removed.

Horrible experience!!…read more Been taking all of our animals there for years. Dog woke up this morning and couldn't walk. Called clinic and was told they were booked every day for 2 weeks and couldn't see my dog. Suggested I take her to urgent care. Was told they don't take walk-ins. They see my dog almost monthly so how is that a walk-in?? It was explained to me that the doctors are booked out so far and can't see any animals for 2 weeks in part because they are training graduates...seriously? You are prioritizing training graduates over your clients and their animals. Even if that is the case who would verbalize that to a loyal client. What a terrible practice. If you are a client of this clinic, I would strongly encourage you to find a new vet!

While their pricing does tend to be a bit higher than other vets I've looked at, the fact that they don't treat my dogs like they're just inconveniences makes a huge difference for me and makes it worth paying a little more. They have always been so understanding and never make me feel guilty that my dogs sometimes require a little extra patience. While working through reactivity I've brought my Australian shepherd in multiple times without an appointment to do some training in the lobby and the front desk staff have always been so nice about offering to take him into the back to help with his training! We've seen a couple different vets over the years, and while we still miss Dr. Maloof, all the other vets have been great.

I came to this VCA after having brought my dogs to various VCA locations in different states throughout the past several decades. VCA used to be known for caring front desk service and compassionate veterinarians. However, this location in the middle of the SL valley is so busy that it seems that most of the people who work at this location have forgotten how to be kind and communicative to pet parents during vet visits. At my first experience here, my dogs and I sat in an exam room for over an hour. I asked multiple times during the hour when we would be seen or if we should make another appointment. Instead of realizing that communication would be helpful, I was treated rudely when I asked how much longer we would be waiting, or if I should make another appointment. While I can understand that some exams might take more time, and emergencies can happen, communication from the staff could go a long way. Instead, I was made to feel as though waiting should be expected and my schedule is not as important as any of the people working here. I should have taken my first experience as a sign of things to come. However, I gave this location multiple opportunities. One of my dogs is about 10 and has arthritis in his spine and hips. At his most recent appointment in June, I asked if we needed bloodwork to be done due to the meds we were trying for him. The vet said no, and we received an email that my dog would not have to be seen for another year. A few weeks after our June appointment, the vet we had been seeing left. When I contacted him to renew the prescriptions he said he would renew, he told me he heard I was going to stay at this location, even though this is not what I had decided. At this location, Dr. Neville would not help my dog unless I had a $500 blood test. The only other bloodwork available was $280. After a month of back and forth as well as being ignored for weeks at a time from both veterinarians, I have decided to bring both of my dogs elsewhere. VCA is the most expensive place to take your pets for many routine tests. They do not appreciate you having things done outside of their practice, or ordering medicine elsewhere. This location and Dr. Neville were dismissive and unwilling to work with me to help my dog despite me suggesting I bring him in to be seen again after his June appointment. While I understand the importance of bloodwork for my dogs if on medication daily, this practice was unwilling to realize that we had just had our yearly exam and were told we did not need bloodwork done. I had asked Neville if we could possibly wait a month or two for bloodwork since I had just paid for graduate school tuition at the U, and this was not acceptable to him. Having never asked for understanding at the vet, this was even more upsetting. I am always willing to pay for what my dogs need at the vet. I was not interested in looking for a new vet at this time in my dog's life, but I refuse to continue going to this VCA when their lack of communication and understanding results in my dog's needs not being taken care of appropriately. This experience has shown me that first impressions really make all the difference, and communication is key to any relationship in health care for humans and pets!

I brought my German Shepherd to this clinic earlier this week because I was concerned that he had a…read morereoccurring UTI. My dog is extremely sweet, well-trained, and has never hurt anyone. He loves people and has always done well around staff, at the vet, and at the groomer. In fact, just two weeks prior to this visit, he was taken to an urgent-care veterinary clinic for the same UTI issue. He was completely calm and sweet with the staff there. He also regularly goes to a different location for grooming and vaccinations, and he goes in happy and comes out happy. This is why I was particularly concerned by what happened during this visit. I want to be fair and acknowledge that the front-desk staff and the two technicians who initially helped us were very kind and welcoming. My dog allowed them to perform his initial heart and lung exam and weigh him without any issues. Unfortunately, my experience changed when Dr. Simmons and another technician came in. They attempted to restrain him by putting him in a headlock, trying to muzzle him, and pinning him down. Given his size and the way he was being handled, he became understandably frightened and started resisting but not once growled or snarled. From what I personally witnessed, the approach felt unnecessarily aggressive and seemed to escalate the situation rather than calm him down. He was then taken to the back for an ultrasound. Approximately 5 minutes later, I was told that he had become so anxious that he urinated on the floor. This has never happened with him before. I was also told that they were unable to flip him onto his back and restrain him sufficiently to perform the ultrasound. He was then prescribed trazodone for anxiety... What concerned me even more was what happened afterward. Later that week, I received a call informing me that my dog had allegedly bitten someone during the visit and that the incident had been reported to animal services. I was not informed of the alleged bite at the time of the visit, and no one told me that anyone had been bitten before I received that later call. I completely understand that a 90-pound German Shepherd requires careful handling and that veterinary staff have to prioritize everyone's safety. However, based on my experience, I believe the way he was approached and restrained contributed significantly to his anxiety. His behavior at the urgent-care vet just two weeks earlier, as well as his consistently positive behavior during grooming and vaccinations at another location, makes this experience especially concerning to me. My dog had already shown that he could calmly cooperate with veterinary staff when approached appropriately. I cannot help but feel that his size and breed influenced how he was perceived and handled, rather than his actual behavior. Based on my experience with Dr. Simmons and the way my dog was handled, I would not personally return to this clinic or recommend Dr.Simmons to anyone. As a vet it's your job to know how to approach animals & in this situation I feel Dr.Simmons truly lacked that knowledge.
