Not one staff greeted me although staff was standing around talking. I went to the perfume display and then over to the lake and sky perfume display. Again no one assisted me. I noticed that when another potential customer came in looking for makeup, a staff member immediately asked if they could help her. I did sense a class discrimination vibe going on. Many years ago I was introduced to Trish McEvoys snowdrops and crystal flowers perfume by the then helpful courteous staff. I purchased it. I associate the wonderful freshness of this perfume with the staff at the time. The store carries a small venue of other perfumes and not the Trish perfumes. *** Visit midweek, January 15 ish 2015. *** I can honestly say I did not experience any of the negativity that was stated in previous reviews. In fact I was a "walk in" and when I inquired I was very professionally scheduled for the next opening that day ,1.5 hours later. There is plenty in Suburban Square to do for that time so I was excited of they accommodating me. When I arrived for my appointment I was nicely greeted. Additionally 2 other staff asked if I was being helped. Services: Eyebrow tinting AND Eyelash tinting. I was extremely happy with how she shaped and tinted my brows. Even happier was I in the eyelash tint which made me discover I still had lashes left and when tinted they seemed longer. Both services which totaled I believe, $60 were a phenomenal value. Not only did they open up my face as bright and more youthful as reported by many people, but they also lasted over 2 months. It was nice to wake up daily and not have to "put on my face" before I had my coffee. I looked that good! And my daily makeup routine was much shorter and easier. Even after implying I most likely would not be purchasing any product that day she wrote me a whole list of what I had tried out and what she would recommend for me. I was out of town for a wedding and came to Ellie for makeup and WOW I am so glad I did. She spent time getting to know me and my style, had me show her a picture of my dress and describe the jewelry. Then she worked her magic. 'Ellie suggested colors that I wouldn't normally try like bronze eyeshadow and if sh didn't nail it - perfect with the camel jumpsuit! She suggests different hues and blush and showed me how best apply it for the structure of my cheekbones and jade shape. The base color simply blends in perfectly but covers every flaw. Now Ellie warned me about a bold lip liner but again she was spot on - looked lovely with the bolder lipstick she applies. Finally eyeliner does not clump. I repeat, eyeliner does not clump and she matched it off my brows - a darker brown completing s natural but elegant look. So thrilled I purchased everything and went back to were we were staying and toast all my old pre-pandemic stuff. I attended a special event they had here Wednesday night. They had tons of new products to test out as well as make-up artists on site to test out the make-up lines they carry in store (Laura mercer, Nars, Bobbi Brown). The women I spoke with were knowledgeable which are why they get 4 stars. However, for women that claim to use all the face creams and whatnot, most of them don't look very young. I hate shopping here. The salespeople hover and don't allow for peaceful shopping. During my visit a saleswoman walked into the store from a break I'm guessing and asked if I needed help, when I politely said no thank you we're fine, she just stood there hovering less than a foot from me until I was so uncomfortable I just left. I don't need to be constantly watched while shopping if people have questions I promise they will ask. If Sephora carried Jo Malone I wouldn't bother even stepping inside. At this point I'll only go in to decide what I'll buy elsewhere. Sephora may be crawling with teenagers but it has a much better atmosphere and friendlier staff and they'll be getting my money instead. read more

I don't know about the negative reviews, but my first experience at Bluemercury was really good. I don't wear makeup on a daily basis, just on special occasions, so I walked past and thought I am looking for a new moisturizer so why not walk in and inquire. The associate that I approached was extremely helpful. I obviously knew nothing about skincare and makeup and it shows by my not wearing any that day and my lack of knowledge of any beauty products, but she didn't treat me negatively at all. She explained about a certain product line, let me try a few of them on my skin, see how they smell, even offered to apply some makeup for me, which I agreed to, so it was pretty cool. I received many samples of products to try out for my moisturizing regimen and I walked out purchasing the one thing I came in for, a moisturizer, without a person pushing me to buy anything else. If this moisturizer works out for me I'm coming back frequently, but even if not I would definitely come back. Since I don't shop for makeup, much less at Sephora and Ulta, I'm not comparing this store to those. I'm reviewing it on it's own merit. If it's a different system than the others, or if they carry only pricey brands, then that's a whole different story that shouldn't affect the review. They're expensive, it's true. If that's the product they carry than that's the product they carry. It's almost like some people are complaining that the Gap sells more expensive clothes than Old Navy. read more

I love high end cosmetics as much as anyone and regularly spend thousands. However Blue Mercury's customer service is so astoundingly bad, so consistently rude and obnoxious, that I will not set foot in this salon. Are you 20something and a size 0? Perhaps you'll have no problem. For us "older" ladies (and oddly enough, we're the ones with plenty of money to spend), count on sales staff who exist solely to ignore you. Take my advice and head out to KOP to Sephora (now THERE's customer service!), Neiman's, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom's or even Macy's for some decent customer service. Don't want to overpay? While eBay has taken a huge tumble, there are still awesome cosmetic deals to be found. I've scored $75 foundation for a fraction of the price (try $22), discontinued MAC lipsticks in my favorite shade for a paltry $12. One of my favorite $75 skincare serums for ... $8! I'm also a huge fan of Sephora online which has one of the best shopping sites ever - bar none - and excellent customer service. Yes, Vicki ... I understand the addiction (I've had it since age 14). But I cannot patronize a place where, as Felicia noted, "the rudeness is off the charts." Places like this should be put OUT of business by people like us. My 16 yo daughter and I have gone in there together and separately. Simply out of protest, we have not purchased anything. The staff ignores you and, when you dare to ask a question, they are down right nasty **and** misleading. They will insist that a product does not have ingredients that are clearly list on the label. And they will swear up and down that a lipstick / foundation/ blush color is *perfect* when it's obviously hideous. Dare to disagree? Yikes! Be prepared for an audible sigh and eye roll. When when we pass by--or even view--the store, we shake our heads and wonder why Blue Mercury is still in business. I know this is for the Ardmore store, but the one in the city by Rittenhouse is just as awful. Hooray for Sephora and KoP department store cosmetic counters. I would bet it's hard for them to compete with online stores, and Sephora, but Suburban Square is generally a good shopping area for a quick gift, or a "Well, I'm at Starbucks and might as well pop in" place. I am not a super fan of the place because they do have a very elitest type attitude. I have looked confused, in need of help, and with money to burn, and no ones come up to me. I would think it would be easy to sell there being that there are so many women desperate for guidance with application, make-up trends, skin tone/make-up matching, whatever.......I can imagine they have a lot of missed opportunities. read more

I unfortunately, am giving this location 2 stars. I've been coming to suburban square bluemercury for years. The women who work here, I have no complaints about, however, the last 5 to 6 times I've shopped here, the older gentleman with silver hair has been a bit much. To my knowledge, he is the only male staff member at this location. I prefer to go in when he's not there. He gossips about customers, has used profanity on the sales floor, is a bit overbearing and a pinch rude. I have made management aware of this, so hopefully they will talk to their staff about professionalism and etiquette while customers are in-store. Whether I am making a purchase or even coming in for a sample, so I can make a future purchase, professionalism should always be maintained in front of patrons. I go to Blue Mercury for Jane. Jane does the BEST eyebrow wax I've had ever! I followed her here from her previous home at the Saturn Club on Penn's Campus. My eyebrow wax went from $9 to $25 but I don't even care because she's totally worth it. It's my splurge thing because I have crazy eyebrows. I have frequented this store about half-a-dozen times over the last year, and always leave with the same impression. The staff is rude and condescending, and even though there are always a ton of them milling about in the store (talking to each other), they can only seem to leer at me as I fumble around trying to find what I'm looking for. I just feel like I'm a bother to anyone in the store, and usually spend an awkward couple of minutes standing by the cash register waiting to check out before anyone deems me worthy enough to deal with. I've also called the store a handful of times (to check on product availability, to schedule a wax appointment, etc.) and they treat people the same way on the phone, too. I've had my eyebrows waxed here twice ... BUYER BEWARE ... I assumed since this is a high-end store, I would receive a decent brow wax. The first time was OK. $25 for a run of the mill wax. She kept trying to upsell me on a brow tint for an additional $30. For something that requires literally no skill and would take all of 5 minutes, I'm not paying an additional $30. The second time was NOT OK. I left in pain with almost all of my skin peeled off under my eyebrows - The wax was too hot. The esthetician clearly saw that this happened, but never said anything to me. She was quick to throw on some concealer, BB cream, and powder before showing me the "finished product". Wax temperature is something that should be monitored closely. I wouldn't expect this at a cheap-o waxing place, let alone at an overpriced place on the Main Line like Bluemercury. Spare yourself the agony of going to the store, and just place your order online. I had a bad experience here. The two ladies working were arrogant to start with but they did make an effort to show me lots of products- I was the only client at the time. I would have preferred to browse on my own; I felt pressured, patronized and frankly bullied by these two women. When I decided to leave without making a purchase the one lady said to the other (loudly) "can you BELIVE that!" I looked back snd she was making a nasty face at me (an overly made up plastic looking face) and the other lady turned to give me another ugly look, I think she said "are you kidding me?" but I'm not certain. Was in town visiting my mom, decided to pop in. I usually go to sephora for items I like to buy - but I wanted some Jo Malone, which sephora does not carry but BMercury does. Met a man named Glenn. What a nice man. Was honest and helpful. He helped me pick out a few products and gave me some samples. His recommendations were spot on and he was so kind. That is the kind of stuff I need when I am looking for a few new products to spruce up my routine. I can understand that people prefer places with a club or rewards program - but I really had a nice experience and I like their products. I would suggest giving it a shot. PROS: - Customer service - Parking is easy - Selection is good - Products are not pushed on you - Glenn! CONS: - Not sure the prices are competitive with Sephora - There is a step to go down in the front that is hard to go down if you have a baby, stroller or wheelchair - this isn't super user friendly - Candles are $40 + dollars. I've been putting off writing this review for a few weeks, prior to my last two experiences I would have given the store 5 stars. I'm a frequent shopper and have had many good experiences in the past. Helpful and knowledgeable staff, great product selection and availability. However during my last two trips I encountered a new sales associate. She welcomed me in a friendly tone, the usual. As I shopped she hovered, which made me feel very uncomfortable. I knew actually what I was looking for and where it was and stated that I did not need help and wanted to browse. She continued to pursue me and checked me out before I was done browsing. As she checked me out my husband, son, and mother-in-law left to go to Starbucks. She then proceeded to ask me if I worked for them. I said no and told her who they were. She then said I looked so young and asked my age and what I do for a living. Of course I told her. She also did not give me any samples after I just spent over $200. Every other time I've purchased something in the store I've received samples. The whole situation felt uncomfortable, but I didn't realize how upset I was until later that day. I am mixed race with brown skin. My husband and mother-in-law are white. My son has white skin. So she assumed because my skin tone was darker I must work for them, as in their nanny or something. And how could someone with brown skin and so young afford a Chanel bag, so she had to ask what I do for a living. I've never experienced anything like that before and did not know how to react. My husband, son and I returned to the store to redeem my free birthday gift and we planned on talking to the manager. The store was filled with many female sales associates and the same woman from my previous encounter. Once again she clung to me and asked if I was okay every two minutes making me feel extremely uncomfortable as I browsed. I did not recognize any of the associates from prior shopping trips and did not feel comfortable speaking to a manager in that setting, so we left. I am very hesitant to return to the store because of that sales associate. I hope in the future they choose employees who do not judge their customers. read more

Came to try a small organic skincare brand not carried elsewhere. The person greeting me didn't know the brand and someone else stepped in. She was friendly but her knowledge was about the same as mine after reading the brand's site. She was better at advising on makeup colors. Initially she kept looking past me like she was eager to move on to other sales, though there were more salespeople than customers in the store. It was only after I kept saying yes to items that she seemed to commit to spending time with me. I left with no samples despite spending almost $500. Salesperson must have typed my email wrong as receipt never arrived. When trying (and failing) to resolve this online, I noticed they had a 20-piece sample offer on purchases of $400 or more that day. read more

I frequent this Bluemercury for eyebrow waxes, and my most recent experience (a repeat of how I have been treated in the past) has prompted me to write this review. I will begin by saying that the woman who actually works on my brows, Mehri, is lovely and does a nice job. My appointments are always scheduled with her, and she has not disappointed me. The rest of the staff, on the other hand, has left me with such a bad taste in my mouth that I will not walk in there again. During each visit over the past year, I have encountered several staff members whose rudeness is something to behold. For a position that is based, in theory, upon customer service, this staff rarely makes eye contact, and seems to always have something better to do than to help. Most recently, I was at the counter to pay for my eyebrow wax, and when I asked the woman for the correct spelling of Mehri's name (so I could write it on the tip envelope), she said to me "oh, it doesn't matter how you spell it. She'll figure it out." Pardon me, but this is her NAME. Further, as I signed my credit slip, the woman was already walking away from this transaction without a "thank you", and left my signed slip in the middle of the counter. And this is not the first time this has happened. Perhaps they will not miss my patronage once a month. Perhaps they profile me as someone who will not buy their outrageously priced cosmetics because I look a little less "Main Line" than those who do shop there (true story, I won't buy their products). Perhaps I am being sensitive because I think a "hello" and a "thank you" and a "have a nice day" with a bit of eye contact is a pleasant thing to encounter. But I prefer to treat people the way I wish to be treated, and on this front, they have failed miserably. read more

Dropped in last summer & asked about a few products recently mentioned in theWall Street Journal style section - was treated to gratuitous political comments by salesperson as to why she didn't read that paper. (No interest at all that it could be a source of customers searching out their recommendations.) Today I went in with a long list of items I needed. I was greeted, to my shock, by one of the salespeople, and I said I would get back to her after a couple of minutes to browse. I found her a few minutes later & named two of the items on my list & said I had a couple of questions. She told me she would get the items, then disappeared. After a few minutes, I looked for her & she was on the phone taking appointments. I stood waiting for about 10 minutes (by one of the products I had questions about). Other salespeople were there, chatting, no one offering to step in to help me. She continued on the phone, so I decided she was wasting my time & left. As I passed by the door I said "See you!" to the two salespeople standing there discussing vacations. They looked at me, so I said "I thought I was being helped but I've been waiting & waiting,so I'm done." No offers to help, just looks. Drove to King of Prussia to Sephora. I was browsing around for a good ten minutes before I had to ask someone to get a particular product from the back, and this was after an expensively-dressed lady walked in and was promptly fawned over by the other sales reps. I visited this store this past weekend since I was in the area and needed a particular product. I had originally looked up the product online and according to the website it was a brand they carried. When I got to the store I showed the people exactly what I was looking for since I had my old product with me but the sales people quickly told me they didn't have what I was looking for which was a clay treatment mask. So I asked if they had something similar from a different brand, rather than showing me other treatment masks they brought me to a lovely display of cleansers. I asked the gentleman helping me if they were masks and he dodged the question and insisted I get the facial cleanser and cleansing pads. To appease him I said fine i'll just get the cleanser but no he wouldn't drop the cleansing pads so I left with them as well. But I will be returning everything I purchased to the Blue Mercury in Center City. The staff is extremely pushy and try's to sell you products you don't want, I regret not walking out rather than wasting my time with returns. read more

Ok, I'm officially boycotting this store. After recently being treated like a felon for wanting to return an item, along with several other problems I've had with this place over the years, I've decided to never set foot in here again. Blue Mercury no longer corners the market on cosmetic brands that I like, so there's no reason to have to endure yet another unpleasant shopping experience here. I go elsewhere for my salon services, so this review is strictly for the store itself. Little B. nicely summed up some of the issues I have: 1. Competitive, aggressive salespeople who pounce on you before you're completely in the door (they practically yell across the store--like going into Vitamin Shoppe). 2. Only issues store credits, even with unused merchandise. 3. Elitist, arrogant attitude permeates the place. I would add to this list the fact that no one has ever gotten back to me when I requested a product that was out of stock. This has happened to me on several occasions. They just seem to go through the motions of taking my name and phone number. I live very close to this store and it would be nice to be able to just pick up an item or two when I run out, but I'm at the point where I don't want to spend any of my hard-earned money in this place. When considering the excellent customer service I get at Sephora and Nordstrom, I'll go a little bit out of my way to be treated in a civilized, professional manner. read more

My relationship with bluemercury is similar to that of a recovering crack addict and some coke. I know its not good for me to go in there, but I do anyway and end up spending way to much money on cosmetics I don't really need. That being said, I love bluemercury for 4 reasons: 1) They carry brands that Sephora does not like Bobbi Brown, Dermalogica, Mario Badescu etc. 2) The stores are less cramped and crowded then a Sephora and better organized. 3) The sales associates do not stalk you like you are a kleptomaniac. 4) There is a spa attached (so handy). Unfortunately I had to dock a star because usually I am treated very well, however the last time I was in I was looking for a new moisturizer and I have very tricky skin so I asked a sales rep for advice and she was downright mean! Honestly, once I told her what I was looking for and what I used to use she said to me "well then I don't know what to tell you" (in a very irritated voice) and walked away from me and then proceeded to ignore me. So I just stood there sad, confused and offended, purchased something on a whim that ended up not working and I had to bring it back. I have been frequenting this Bluemercury for several years for brow waxes, bikini waxes and general makeup purchases. I am only knocking off one star because the wait for a wax is sometimes a little bit too much when they're very busy. I have never had anything except a positive experience at this store. I'm a regular, and they have always been very friendly and helpful. Every time I go, I've always gotten hooked up with large amounts of free samples, even men's products when I mention my husband. I recently had my makeup done (gratis) for a Trish McEvoy event and although the rep didn't represent the store, she was sweet as could be and the staff were great as well. The prices are high, but it seems in alignment with the higher-end brands they're selling. I will never go anywhere else for a brow wax as they're consistently the best and never irritate my super sensitive skin unlike prior waxing experiences elsewhere. read more

I agree with the other reviewers who said the customer service was horrible. I received a gift certificate and went in to use it. The salesperson told me she couldn't tell what color my skin was. She insulted the products I used and generally made me feel uncomfortable. I, too, wonder how they stay in business. Management needs to train the salespeople in some common courtesy. This past Thursday I had a Brazilian waxing and the esthetician was lovely; unlike most of my experiences with the staff who work on the front end of this location. Overall the waxing itself was not that bad; with exception that the bed is placed under am AC vent which hardens the wax and makes her unable to remove it. This she explained to me as she had to apply 2&3 layers of a softer hot wax to my very sensitive area to remove to hardened original wax. It is 4 days later and I now have layers of skin that have been removed and are healing, bumps and some brusing. This is not acceptable. Get your shit together blue mercury!! Do not place the hot wax bed under the AC vent. I would post a pic but I doubt any of you want to look at my vag! read more
