Blueberrys, another of Brighton's too-numerous corner shops, is on the very fringe of the London Road corner shop area, an area overflowing with off-licenses and other grotty little shops. Despite the slightly more upmarket nature of Trafalgar Street, Blueberry's doesn't make any effort to offer more than a traditional corner shop: cheap food, booze and sundries.
The more corner shops I visit, the more I start to see their presence as a necessary evil. There are cheaper and better places to buy all of their stock, but their convenience makes up for their card charges and poor selection. As well as this convenience, corner shops encourage simple shopping: you don't worry about what you can't get, you just buy the tasteless, cheap sausage roll and forget about it.
I cannot be that positive about corner shops: in the end, they're a painful business to visit, and yet you will always come back, because it is only around the corner, or on the way to where you're going. In this particular case, as corner shops go, Blueberrys didn't seem to have a very good selection of chocolates and cigarettes, my main reason for corner shop living, and it all looked a bit bleak and spartan. Not a pleasant experience at all.
I can't say more than: it's a corner shop. If you're popping in to grab something, Blueberrys has a lot of somethings. If you're looking for something in particular, you'll know if Blueberrys has what you like. If you want a slightly more wholesome shopping experience, Go Local is not far into the North Laine, and has a greater selection, as well as some fresh fruit. I'm just suggesting ;) read more
