M & A Convenience Store

M & A Convenience Store

I have tried to call this number and I can't get throug? my daughter lost her phone in your shopread more

Whilst Googling M&A, to find out there phone number to add to my review for them, I was quite…read moresurprised to see that the first entry that I could find was a an anti-M&A Facebook group. To be fair the group hadn't had an entry since early 2008, but still I was intrigued by the active hatred that the workers in this cornershop had seemingly inspired, due to them being quite so 'grumpy' and 'rude'. I have often been standing in M&A in the early hours, whilst everything else has been closed, maybe a little drunk, indecisively hovering aound their shop deciding what to buy for what might seem like an eternity, and they have always been friendly and quite humorous in my experience. So I can only go on that, and assume either the students who made the group are over sensitive, or the workers of M&A had some massive customer service crackdown after the facebook fiasco. Anyway, the best thing about this convenience store, and the only reason why I have been in it, is the fact that it opens til later than other off licences, so affords you the luxury of continuing your drunkery until 3am. This fact is known to most in this area, and sometimes you can find yourself having non-sensical chats to other people who've made the very same pilgrimage as you, and the store can get quite busy for such a time. There is also notably a decent selection of magazines on offer.

All Sorts

All Sorts

What with all the corner stores around here, its quite hard to be the best, and while I wouldn't…read moreargue that All Sorts is, I would say it has the most originality. Like the name suggests, its more about having a broad variety than stocking traditional things (like crisps and beer) to a high standard. There's a good lot of candles and stationary items - maybe to be used together for late night writing in the wilderness - and other what nots that make it a useful place to step in if your caught out by the more commercial places shutting early (as I was late one Sunday). It also boasts an internet café (or so the huge signs suggest) but seeing as I have it at home and on my mobile, I've not needed to test it out...

All Sorts is okay, and the staff are usually friendly. The main plus is the fairly large internet…read moreroom upstairs, which is £1 an hour I think. Rather oddly they have a love tester outside - you put your hand on it and it reveals your inner passions or something - I think this is probably somewhat revealing about what they're going for with their stock selection here... As Ross M. complained, there's really not much in terms of food (although I found an okay tomato pasta pot there once when I was in a similarly desperate situation!), and the vast amount of snacks and soft drinks suggest they're catering more for passing tourists and shoppers rather than workers or locals! All Sorts doesn't really sell all sorts, and neighbouring late night newsagents Well Done is better for that. But on the other hand if you need some tobacco, or a chocolate bar - you're all sorted!

Bharat's

Bharat's, another of the many corner-shops in the southern Lanes area, loses out to the competition…read moreon many grounds. First of all, the selection is poor if you want anything but chocolate, crisps, magazines or cigarettes. Secondly, the prices seem comparatively higher, and the staff are a generally belligerent lot. Where Well Done has more of a product mix and Sparkling has a more cooking-ingredient based selection, Bharat's fails to provide anything beyond the pure basics. Situated right next door to the Fishbowls, Bharat's is a frequent stop-off point for a late night drinkers, and as such clearly aims for the market over all others. If you're looking for a selection of snack-treats in a weak moment, all you'll find is chocolate and crisps: not the worst snack out there, but you might want some variance on that theme. This lack of choice is compounded by the seemingly high prices. Everything I buy elsewhere seems to have another 5-10p stuck onto the price at Bharats. Maybe this is to catch out the late-night revellers, meandering home at 3 in the morning from the late night locale that is the Fishbowl, but to the random passer-by, this is a bit of a slap in the face. In short, there are better places very close by for snacks and the like. Bharat's isn't a bad corner-shop, it's just a slight step below what this area has to offer in terms of corner shops. Go to Sparkling, right across the road, or Well Done on North Street.

Bharat's is a rather nicely sized corner shop sitting (conveniently) just alongside the Fish Bowl,…read moreand is perfect to stop off at if you're winding your way back from many of the seafront clubs, looking for somewhere to get a snack or some beverages for the walk home. There's not as many random bits and pieces here as some newsagents, and there aren't that many good meal making ingredients, but there's more space given over to savoury and sweet snacks and alcohol, which works well.
