To be fair the group hadn't had an entry since early 2008, but still I was intrigued by the active hatred that the workers in this cornershop had seemingly inspired, due to them being quite so 'grumpy' and 'rude'. I have often been standing in M&A in the early hours, whilst everything else has been closed, maybe a little drunk, indecisively hovering aound their shop deciding what to buy for what might seem like an eternity, and they have always been friendly and quite humorous in my experience. So I can only go on that, and assume either the students who made the group are over sensitive, or the workers of M&A had some massive customer service crackdown after the facebook fiasco. Anyway, the best thing about this convenience store, and the only reason why I have been in it, is the fact that it opens til later than other off licences, so affords you the luxury of continuing your drunkery until 3am. This fact is known to most in this area, and sometimes you can find yourself having non-sensical chats to other people who've made the very same pilgrimage as you, and the store can get quite busy for such a time. There is also notably a decent selection of magazines on offer.

First of all, the selection is poor if you want anything but chocolate, crisps, magazines or cigarettes. Secondly, the prices seem comparatively higher, and the staff are a generally belligerent lot. Where Well Done has more of a product mix and Sparkling has a more cooking-ingredient based selection, Bharat's fails to provide anything beyond the pure basics. Situated right next door to the Fishbowls, Bharat's is a frequent stop-off point for a late night drinkers, and as such clearly aims for the market over all others. If you're looking for a selection of snack-treats in a weak moment, all you'll find is chocolate and crisps: not the worst snack out there, but you might want some variance on that theme. This lack of choice is compounded by the seemingly high prices. Everything I buy elsewhere seems to have another 5-10p stuck onto the price at Bharats. Maybe this is to catch out the late-night revellers, meandering home at 3 in the morning from the late night locale that is the Fishbowl, but to the random passer-by, this is a bit of a slap in the face. In short, there are better places very close by for snacks and the like. Bharat's isn't a bad corner-shop, it's just a slight step below what this area has to offer in terms of corner shops. Go to Sparkling, right across the road, or Well Done on North Street.

Selection is generally poor, with a huge amount of space unused: something's gone very wrong with the planning here. Also, for a shop in the middle of pub and party town, there's a shockingly bad selection of cigarettes and booze, and the prices seem to have been jacked up too! Avoid. From the outside, One Step looks like it's doing the right thing: unlike most convenience stores, it looks clean and modern, and the whole shop seems to light up like a Christmas tree from the outside: very inviting. However, upon entering, there is little to buy or return for. The shop sports a huge open space in the middle, with walls lined with products, but no aisles or anything like that. This huge waste of space is strange enough, but added to One Step's rather poor selection of, well, nearly everything, and you start to wonder why this rather large shop floor is empty. Their general selection is bad enough, but One Step also seem to have forgotten their target demographic. One Step is in the middle of West Street, and thus should be selling cigarettes and booze: it's almost a given. Instead, their selection of both the above is pathetic: who are they expecting to walk in? This is all already bad enough, but then the prices are all between 5-10p more than any other convenience store I've ever been in... The problem here seems to be two-tiered. A great location and snazzy look have obviously cost One Step far more than they think they can recoup, leaving stocks low and selection poor. This has then led to greater prices, in the hopes of recouping all of their losses. If they're where they are for long enough, they should have no problem, it's just such a poor example of a convenience store. The only convenience here is walking past.

The newsagents itself is pretty decent by all accounts, even if unspectacular. They sell a few things beyond the standard; pistachio's and various spicy snacks (a personal favourite). Really though, this is a store that just provides the essentials to local residents. One good positive is that Joeies tends to be open later than most local shops, making it easier to get your pint of milk for the that late night cup of tea.

Its also pleasant to see a convenience store so clean, with its windows clear of clutter and laminate flooring positively glowing with freshness. The only possible downside to this pleasant presentation could be splutter inducing-ly high prices, which Blueberrys is thankfully devoid of, instead pricing itself dead centre of the standard corner store. Add a couple of helpful members of staff and you have yourself a 4* corner shop! Shame about the miss spelling of blueberries...
