Yes...you've guessed it, we were drunk! We found it even funnier when the lighter we purchased had 'well done' printed on it, as if we were being congratulated every time we had a cigarette! In the sober light of day, this is just wrong! Well Done is very much a stumble in when you're drunk and starving, pick up a packet of crisps, or something else equally unsubstantial, and stumble back out kind of a place. You'll find all of the usual newsagent/corner shop stuff...magazines, tobacco, cold drinks, pretty unappetizing sandwiches and a giant selection of crisps, chocolate and biscuits. Everything makes sense except for the name...why oh why is it called 'Well Done'? 'Well done, you've made it this far in life'? Or perhaps its just 'Well done, you've made it through the night'?

Mace (as well as having a memorable name) also fits the St. James style of stores by having a slightly more clean and concise layout than most corner stores in the rest of the nation, let alone Brighton, but other than that remains fairly unremarkable.

It doesn't quite have the range of smokers heaven (which stocks electric grinders) but it sure beats it on its range of magazines. There's about a third of the entire store dedicated to them here! There's a few surprising additions in the form of green and blacks chocolate which come as a surprise, but its not the best layed out I've seen on London Road.

It's worth going to to look at the sign outside in disbelief, but don't go in. Yes, it is called Shiv News. I'm sure it means something else in another language, but to see a newsie called Shiv News selling papers about stabbings really appeals to my love of black humour. I think most Brits have some kind of funny-bone for this kind of bizarre humour: it is strangely funny every time I walk past. Beyond musing about this shop's name, there is little I can say that is positive. The service is atrocious: I've been sworn at, treated poorly, charged absolutely excessive card rates... Just rubbish. Add that to the already super-inflated prices, and the one star review is already more than justified. Mercifully, the selection is quite poor: there's little reason to have to be faced with prices or the service. In my mind, this is Brighton's worst corner-shop. Badly staffed and run, with a bizarre name that just shrieks bad humour, my only advice is stay away.

Yet another Brighton convenience store/corner shop, North Street Food and Wine is a little more…read moreconvenient than most corner shops for me, being directly on my way back home from the North Laine area. I often seem to end up here on my way home, if money's tight, picking up some cheap grub, and for that this store is absolutely fine. Just don't expect anything too fancy: it is just a convenience store. Run by the same people that run All Sorts across the road, North Street Food and Wine is definitely the better of the two shops. They have more on offer, not just booze and magazines, and it can legitimately replace a cheap food shop if you're just looking for microwave pizzas and crisps. I have to admit the occasional horrible food binge: every now and again, food like that is all I really want, making this the right place to go. As stated above, this is a convenience store: don't expect the world from the stock. If you're looking for anything beyond cheap, tasteless snacky bits and pieces, you should be shopping elsewhere. Also, offering lots of cheap food but smacking on a huge card handling fee is not my idea of a fair deal. Especially when it seems to change depending on who's serving... In the end, North Street Food and Wine is convenient and has a larger stock than most convenience stores, so it is a lot better than many of the convenience stores that dot Brighton's shopping landscape. Just don't expect healthy food, or anything out of the ordinary.

If so, then this store is the better of the two (although lacking an internet cafe, but then why would you need another one 30 seconds away?!). Here you'll find your usual array of cheap snack foods, as well as a few basic grocery/household items. They also sell individual fresh fruit pieces, displayed outside, which can be quite handy if you're on the go.

The shop itself is tiny, one of those box-room newsagents crammed to breaking point of daily essentials. The little man who runs it is very friendly, until you try to pay on your card when there isn't enough on it. He also told me I didn't need to buy butter one evening on the way back from the gym because I was fat enough. I was not amused. I did have my massive bulky parker on though, and he was very apologetic when he saw the red in my eyes. Curiously, he's been overly friendly ever since!

Unless there has been a massive accident on the road between you and the much larger and better stocked agent across the road, your better off heading there instead. You'll find nuts, chocolate, some basic grocery items, cigarettes, magazines, newspapers etc. I know when I went in there to get a paper on Sunday afternoon it was out of stock, but then it probably was in most places after the morning. All in all this place is okay, but does face competition from the bigger and bolder 'Well Done' across the road.

To my delight, they not only had pen and paper, but in a good deal of variety too, with a mix of pencils and large notebooks sitting alongside ball points and 100% recycled jotters. Fantastic! And the range of bits and pieces isn't limited to stationary either, with plenty of random goods on offer. They also have the standard array of soft drinks and snacks too, and a well stocked set of alcohol shelves. There's a good selection of corner shops on North Street, but this is the one for me, seeing as they saved me so royally that evening.
