Yes...you've guessed it, we were drunk! We found it even funnier when the lighter we purchased had 'well done' printed on it, as if we were being congratulated every time we had a cigarette! In the sober light of day, this is just wrong! Well Done is very much a stumble in when you're drunk and starving, pick up a packet of crisps, or something else equally unsubstantial, and stumble back out kind of a place. You'll find all of the usual newsagent/corner shop stuff...magazines, tobacco, cold drinks, pretty unappetizing sandwiches and a giant selection of crisps, chocolate and biscuits. Everything makes sense except for the name...why oh why is it called 'Well Done'? 'Well done, you've made it this far in life'? Or perhaps its just 'Well done, you've made it through the night'?

It doesn't quite have the range of smokers heaven (which stocks electric grinders) but it sure beats it on its range of magazines. There's about a third of the entire store dedicated to them here! There's a few surprising additions in the form of green and blacks chocolate which come as a surprise, but its not the best layed out I've seen on London Road.

The West Pier is a very sad story in the annals of heritage in the UK…read more Ther UK's only pier to be listed as grade I status was built in 1863-66 to the design of Eugenius Birch, embellished by the Victorians and Edwardians with magnificent concert and entertainment halls. Sectioned off for security reasons in World war II, it nevertheless survived the war to become a victim instead of the general post-War decline of the British seaside resort. Closed as a dangerous structure in 1975, repeated efforts to restore it were thwarted by delays, arguments and red tape. Salvation seemed at hand when, at last, the West Pier Trust had raised sufficient funds and had attracted successful lottery grants. Planning permission for its restoration had only just been secured when it succumbed in 2002 to a violent storm which damaged part of the concert hall deck, followed by two very suspicious and well-organised arson attacks in 2003. Plans are still continuing to restore the Pier, through developing a new tower attraction on the landward side. Best of luck to them. In the meantime, the twisted wreckage is testimony to a national heritage disgrace.

It will be a very sad day indeed when the remains finally collapse and sink into the water. Head down to the seafront with your camera or sketchbook while you still have the chance to enjoy this inspiring, haunting structure.

There's quite a big section of postage material, labels, envelopes, boxes and the like, and a really good variety of cards, magazines too. There's a kind of household section, more than you might think, cleaning materials, candles, the odd fusewire, that sort of thing - the sort of thing that if you've run out, you really need it. There's also a table in the middle filled with gift books and children's books, which could probably do very well for a late present you've forgotten to get. The post office is to one side of the shop, and keeps normal post office hours, more or less. For me, it doesn't have the atmosphere it once did, but I can tell from those around that actually other people still like it just fine.

Half the magazine is dedicated to property - with both rental and sales. Of course, most of the rental places will almost certainly have gone by the time you ring up the agent, but at least it's a good way to get a flavour of what's available. The other half is lifestyle and entertainments, with a useful TV guide in the centre, and articles on various aspects of Brighton life, including reviews and regular columnists. It's normally available at Brighton Station and outside various newsagents and estate agents - it's hardly groundbreaking journalism, but it's a good place to get a feel for the city if you're new here, or check listings if you're not.
