Sometimes despite its best effort and massively diverse selection of shops, restaurants and places to eat, chill and take it all in, Brighton just can't deliver the goods. This is as they say "not for the want of trying" but simply due to the fact that it's a city. For those of us more mobile the Weald holds many wonderful secrets and Wiston Post Office is one of the finest. For despite the name it really is so much more. Wiston itself is so small at hardly exists but as you pass along the tiny back road that heads through this truly beautiful hamlet you come across a little pre- Victorian building with a post office sign on it. Pull into the little gravel car park next to it and its true identity will be revealed.
For behind the facade of a quaint little rural shop is one of the finest tea rooms in West Sussex. There is a little brook which runs apparently through and under the place and the roughly terraced outdoor eating area come garden is framed by trees and a field with goats, ducks and often a couple of sheepdogs in. To place your order you pass through a tunnel-esque corridor with the indoor cafe area to your left and a little service hatch to your right where supper friendly middle-aged women are ready to jot down your order and take your money. I've been here on quite a few hung over summer Sunday mornings now, and can definitely recommend ordering a cream tea and heading to the garden to wait for your order in a blissful utopian 1950s time capsule, while comely girls go back and forth with trays of utter delight.
