Most of the winery restaurants in the Mudgee region are only open for lunch on weekends or Fridays, or otherwise offer tasting and cheese platters for those who'd like some food at the winery. Blue Wren has a' la carte options available from Wednesdays.
Our visit was on a cold Friday afternoon, and we sat in the smaller room between the tasting are and the larger function room, warmed by a wood fire at one end. My beef burger was chunky and flavoursome, while my partner's fish and chips were rated "Fantastic!" - large pieces of succulent fillet with just the right amount of light batter to give a bit of crunch. At $40 for the two dishes, pretty good value.
What ought to be considered though, is the level of markup on the wines. Our two glasses of the winery's own product cost about the same as a full BOTTLE from the Cellar Door not 10 metres away; and the glassware was nicer at the tasting table! And bottles at the restaurant cost around double the price of getting one from the Cellar and walking it in. It's obviously so much more money than any regular dining venue would charge for corkage, one wonders what the rationale is of doing so. read more
