We are a military family so we have experienced quite a few dentists in many locations, but we will be devastated when the time comes that we have to move away from Dr. Uchida because he is absolutely the best! My three children all look forward to their visits (I've never been able to say that before). The experience is so different from any other office we've visited; every visit is peaceful and the rapport Dr. Uchida establishes with all his little patients is a delight to watch. One of my sons is autistic and has always dreaded going to the dentist before but he doesn't mind his visits here in the least because Dr. Uchida is so gentle and it's much easier for my son to relax when he can't hear other children fussing or tools making loud noises in other rooms. I can't say enough positive things about Dr. Uchida and this office. I'm very particular and have high standards about dental methods used, how my kids are handled, cleanliness, professionalism, etc., being a healthcare professional as well. Having had experiences with different dental offices on the island, this by far has been the best experience. I wish he could be my dentist, as well! The office is small and clean and organized. They are not a huge patient pumping establishment that wants to push lots of unnecessary services for max reimbursement. Dr. Uchida speaks to my kids as individuals that are involved and responsible for their dental care, which I appreciate. He also explains to me, the parent, honest assessment and also options. Not like some other dentists that will only give you what they think and no other patient factors considered. The appointments are limited; however, understandable and appreciated, given Dr. Uchida's credentials and work in rural communities. Dr. Uchida's office is very clean, welcoming, and well maintained. His Kaimuki office is located on the second floor inside the Waialae Building. They provide validated parking in the secure parking lot under the building. I appreciate the fact that he doesn't pack his schedule with patients (even before Covid-19) so you never feel rushed and are able to receive the attention and care you need. I noticed that his office does not have any TVs. I feel that this allows you to have a more personal experience and helps you develop a trusting patient-dentist relationship. It also lets you maintain clear communication with Dr. Uchida without distractions during your visit. Another awesome thing I noticed was that he offers bamboo toothbrushes instead of plastic! An environmentally conscious dental office is a big plus for me. While often times dental visits can be associated with feelings of anxiety, fear, and stress, a visit with Dr. Uchida is everything but that. He is very patient and will thoroughly answer any questions or concerns you might have. He is a big believer in preventative oral health care. He is very involved in the dental community in Hawai'i and also finds time to volunteer in non-profit and federal government humanitarian dental missions in rural locations overseas. I suggest taking the time to read through their website before your first visit. There is a useful section where he discusses the role of parents in various dental appointments. Dr. Uchida also discusses his thoughts and approach on certain procedures such as the usage of fluoride and nitrous oxide. Hallelujah I finally found the perfect dentist for my kids! I had a great general dentist who worked on a lot of children back in Cali but was sad when I found out there was nobody like him on Oahu, let alone all of Hawaii. But now my search is officially over because Dr. Gavin Uchida is the perfect and best children's dentist in Honolulu, no he's actually the best pediatric dentist in all of Hawaii! First, he offers a free meet and greet meeting where we all had a chance to meet him and check out the office. His office is super clean and is filled with lots of fun things for kids to play with. He answered all my questions and did not freak out when I told him I prefer no fluoride for my kids. All pediatric dentists I've met in the past would try to lecture me when I mentioned that but not Dr. Gavin. He has options for those who avoid fluoride for whatever reasons and will happily support you and your wishes. My kids had a blast with him. He spoke at my son's elementary school and the kids had such a great time he couldn't wait to see Dr. Gavin. He really knows how to interact with children and even has a child psychologist available to help kids who may need additional help to overcome fears to get dental treatment. I've never ever heard of this option before, it's an incredible service. I'm a tough parent for a kid's dentist to work with because I also prefer minimally invasive techniques for my kids. Again, a perfect match here. Dr. Gavin always tries to minimize tooth removal and does not use amalgams. He's a mercury free dentist which is a must when working with little children. I'm glad to know that he can do ceramic fillings for my kids if they need them. And he also went over some great homecare tips and education on healthy diets. We love Doctor Gavin and the staff at Blue Whale! So happy that we decided to come here. It's conveniently located on Waialae Ave (3660 building) We always go on Saturdays, when he's BOOKED with tons of little patients. The waiting room is stocked full of fun toys, crayons and markers, blocks, and books. This is also one of the nicest & cleanest dentist offices I've ever set foot in, by the way. There's cute whale pillows on the chairs, calming fish tank and relaxing music playing, and cute mobiles hanging from the ceiling. Note: there is no TV with cartoons on -- sadly, I almost expected that as a default distraction at a children's care provider, so I really appreciate the fact that this office does NOT choose to have one. Doctor Gavin is THE BEST! Appointments are quick and to-the-point (a must for a squirmy toddler), and my son always gets to pick a cool toy before leaving! He likes Hotwheels, which Doctor seems to always stock up on. Highly recommend!!!!! read more

I'm just baffled right now. I emailed Gavin a question and he emailed me back "...your appointment has been cancelled". Cancelled for asking a question?? I have yet to hear back from him since inquiring about exactly why he decided to cancel our appointment and basically shun us as patients. Long story- my 1 and 3 year old have major teeth problems that have caused our family so much stress over the past few years, not to mention the financial stress of dental bills even with insurance!!! We do NO processed sugar, no snacks, all organic everything, brush twice daily, etc, and still :( our other dentist is good but their appointments are booked so far out and I felt like I was watching my sons teeth rot away by the day so I wanted to try something new and booked at Blue Whale as I saw online that he had the better quality white caps we might need for my babies front teeth. So I booked an appointment, drove across the island from where we live, sat in on a quick "let me see your teeth" appointment, paid $70 out of pocket, and then booked the next appointment a few days out because he could see the urgency needed to get the work done ASAP. All good so far, besides that I didn't like the way he was talking to my older son at that appointment, seemed like he must not have kids or no skills talking to a toddler, I could also tell that he just wanted me the mom to shush and let him decide what's best for my baby, kinda strange. Anyway so I go home, a couple days later he sends the estimate to get the work done, I'm at home as a full time mom plus full time work, so I'm busy but reviewing the estimate and calling the other dentist to send their estimate which turns out to be $650 less. For me and most people that's a significant amount for the same exact work to be done. I email Gavin back, this is about 36 hours before our next appointment, and basically say "hey this is on my mind it seems like a better option, but we can discuss it at the appointment tomorrow... your thoughts?" I was expecting a "yes we could do that" or "no we shouldn't do that because" response, if any response since I was going to see him tomorrow anyway. Instead I got an email at 7pm the night before our appointment saying our appointment was cancelled. Cancelled because I asked a question?! And shunned as patients because even after I responded he never gave me the option to rebook, saying that appointment spot had been filled immediately and hasn't responded to me since. I guess I've just never been rejected that bluntly before. But it made my blood boil because he KNOWS how urgent it is to get the dental work done before my sons teeth completely fall out before my eyes:( so now I don't know what to do I really feel helpless but I need to get my baby to the dentist asap and not waste time going to a dentist who is eventually just going to shun us for asking a question. Amazing! After reading all the glowing reviews, I went in with high expectations and he exceeded my expectations! First of all, I left a message (his recording is very informative in terms of when to expect a call back) and Dr. Gavin called me back in a few hours personally, to answer my questions and schedule an appointment. He was very detailed in telling me my co-pay, approximately how long the whole appointment would take and their cancellation policy. Our appointment was at 8:40 and there was ample parking in the building. The waiting room is so calming! Perfect amount of lighting, soft music, cute decorations. I filled out their form and my daughter enjoyed watching "Nemo" in their fish tank. We were taken in promptly and as I held my daughter, he discussed cavity cause and prevention. He is so thorough in explaining everything, even what was going to happen next. My daughter just turned two and this was her first dental visit. I put it off as long as I could since she refuses to open her mouth for anyone, myself included. BUT, she opened her mouth for Dr. Gavin! And without any screaming or tears! I couldn't believe it. He showed me how to brush her teeth and, again, explained in detail where she had plaque and how her teeth were. I wish I knew about him when my son was little. This is a special office. It is REALLY not like any other doctor or dentist office I have ever been to. Its a very personal experience, and I know my kids are in good hands. The office itself is calm. I asked Dr Gavin about it, and he said that he only sees around 15-20 kids a day, which is why everyone receives such personal service. He doesn't pack the waiting room with tons of people, and I get the clear feeling he cares more about quality and teaching families, rather than just making money. Related to that, Dr Gavin cares about kids. You can feel how he respects and listens and understands kids and families. He personally focused nearly 20 minuets teaching me and my kids about how we can have a lifetime without new cavities, and can have a healthier lifestyle. Gentle x-rays and cleaning, which Dr Gavin did himself, not an assistant. Digital xrays (low radiation) after he discussed why and asked my permission (which i really appreciate). No pressure from him. No scare tactics. Just simple and honest conversation. After 2 checkups like this, I feel empowered with how to prevent cavities in my kids, and our results are showing it. When 2 of my daughters old mercury fillings from our old dentist needed to be redone, Dr Gavin replaced them with white fillings. The process took around 20 minutes, and was painfree for a 6 year old. No laughing gas or sedation. Perfect! There was clear explanation of office policies and financial costs in advance. The only downside is that my checkup copay is a little higher (copay $35 each child) because this office is not "in network" with my insurance, but imo good healthcare for my kids is worth it. This office is pleasant, and it delivers. And of that's not enough, it turns out my kids' dentist is the government Dental Director for the whole state of Hawaii! My confidence is reinforced. I just want to start off by saying thank you so much to Dr. Gavin Uchida & his staff members. From the start from when I first called, he answered as much as I had to ask; And he was out of office! I couldn't believe this unbelievably genuine care he had for my daughter and I. As a new Mommy it was everything I could have asked for from a children's dentistry. He had asked me questions that I haven't even thought about and guided my daughter and I to the best and most affordable route to healthier teeth for her. One thing I do want to mention is that he does not take quest. But the amount we paid was made affordable and was well worth it! For my daughter to always be in the best of hands is all I ask for and he really out did himself. My daughter screams easily when I brush her teeth and throws a tantrum. But with Dr. Gavin and his beautiful assistants sweet words and kindness it did not go as bad as when I have her. Their calming words to hear calmed her down and he even showed me better ways to brush her teeth effectively! I appreciate all the effort they put in to make sure that my daughter was always okay and the fact that they always made sure that my other half and I were also comfortable in the room checking up almost every 10 seconds to see if we were okay. After two previous unsuccessful visits with other dentists, I was feeling frustrated finding a suitable dentist for my three year old. His office is so clean and kid-friendly. I have been looking for a new pediatric dentist for my daughters for the past few months. Our pediatrician spoke highly of Blue Whale, so we decided to try. Our experience with Blue Whale was great from the beginning. Making an appointment never has been this easy. Then before we when into the appointment, Dr Gavin called and asked about my kids past experience with dentists. i couldn't believe he did that. Just like the phone call, the office visit was very personal too. At other dentists office, I felt like my kids and I were just numbers. But Blue Whale is different. The office was clean and inviting with plenty to do for the kiddos, and he himself was very personable and professional. What i liked and trusted most is that he was able to take care of all sorts of pediatric needs. The entire experience was stress free but most importantly very informative! Dr. Gavin is magic with kids. Our family was only a few minutes late for our last appointment because of a horrible traffic accident. While standing in the pay parking lot, attempting to stuff dollar bills in a slot way too small, the dentist calls me to cancel all services with our kids. Shockingly rude, unprofessional and uncompassionate. We'd never missed an appt. before or been late. Of course after I'd already driven 40 minutes in bad traffic from my home to get there. Parking is very inconvenient at this location and the lot charges $6, no matter how long you're there. (Flat rate fee only, not a prorated lift gate). My husband kept telling me to find a better dentist but I kept wanting to give them the benefit of the doubt. Now I know why. My husband was right, so happy he was too. We've found an amazing new dentist that understands Honolulu traffic issues and with free parking on the first floor. There were also several times I'd drop by and no one was there. I'd visited or came by at different times, on weekdays during AM and PM, no one around and with a locked door and lights off. There was no note they were at lunch or otherwise. I've also called many times during their listed 8-6 business hours and no answer. Why doesn't he have a receptionist? Very unprofessional in my opinion. read more

So far, I have been very satisfied with Dr. Gavin Uchida in the numerous visits we have had in the past few months. He has been courteous, professional, patient to explain on our level, flexible with scheduling on urgent matters and is very personable - which makes my children more at ease. His office is clean and comfortable but also just very kid friendly with blocks, books, figurines and crayons. He is good with kids. I was seeking a more holistic dentist after being very frustrated with the advice I was getting from a couple other children's dentist in regards to cavities and fillings. Specifically, I was told my sons two front teeth would have to be capped and could not filled with anything beside metal options as white fillings "would not hold" or else to let them rot out or extract them. I was already devastated that my son had cavities Inbetween the two front teeth (they had been in the little overlap behind them hard to catch) and ever more-so, as well as shocked to hear many children's dentist would not do white caps here in OAHU. I finally found him through Yelp, saw great reviews, and even checked with a acquaintance who is in the dental industry here and all confirmed that he was a great dentist, very honest and caring and well trained. He DOES WHITE HIGH GRADE PORCELAIN FILLINGS ON CHILDREN! No Mercury, no metal, and if you do need caps, yes he has white options. We did a checkup just to get the kids acquainted and he was so comfortable and easy to trust. My kids indeed had cavities to fill but unlike other dentists, he first took very visibly clear, low-ray exrays WITH US THE PARENTS IN THE ROOM TO WITNESS IT ALL, (instead of just going in to the cavity at time of filling to make the decision then.) he also was able to avoid caps (that others said were a must!) and instead full with white ! The teeth look beautiful but also, WE THE PARENTS WERE ABLE TO GO IN THE ROOM DURING THE FILLINGS INSTEAD IF HAVING TO WAIT ELSEWHERE - and therefore, we became more educated on the process, and how to deal with our children. Of course the children cry, but it's much more reassuring to know all that is happening - plus, Dr. Gavin does not give drugs unless really needed, we had minimal numbing and laughing gas and he took a lot of time to talk things over with us BEFORE AND AFTER which goes to show he understands that you need to establish trust. He has done that for us. If that's not enough, he just fixed my sons tooth when my son somehow chipped his front tooth at preschool. I called in the morning and he accommodated that day on his day off, without any help from staff like he normally has on procedures. My son's teeth look great, my son even tells everyone proudly that he went to the dentist and fixed his tooth. He took time to ask what we are doing at home as a family in brushing habits, in eating habits and our Family beliefs! He didn't push fluoride nor bash it, but explained that until decay bacteria is cleared completely, he suggests use of flouride in addition to change in health habits. My daughter was completely delighted by "Eel-alizabeth" and the rest of the residents of their fish tank and walked out after her appointment with a little stuffed animal which she hasn't let go of for days. She was completely comfortable with Dr. Uchida and also said that he was gentler than her last dentist - a huge plus for a great experience. Parents will be impressed by Dr. Uchinda's education and work experience - check out his profile on the Blue Whale site (or in the "From the Business" profile at the bottom of this page) - and you'll appreciate the validated parking in the basement of the building. Also note that this Dr. Gavin Uchida DDS is not in the same office as Clyde Uchida in Kahala Mall; I'm guessing this could be confusing. What a great overall experience!!!!! I can't speak enough about how good this new dental office is. Dr. Uchida and his staff are so kind and gentle, and the office is spotless/brand new!! I have never seen a dental office this beautiful! They have books, toys and an aquarium to keep children busy. My kids LOVED it- they did not scream like they usually do during these kinds of exams :). They also gave us welcome gifts- can you believe it?! I wanted to find a good dentist for my kids. We have HDS insurance. I got an appointment with blue whale & feel the quality of the work was good but was in sticker shock when the copays were announced. We visited 2 times for cleaning, X-rays and have 2 cavities treated on baby teeth that were not causing any discomfort. Between our 2 kids, we paid $460 dollars in copays!! Yikes!!! I like that we were able to stay with our Our kids during the process & they did well. I thought The work done on my child's baby teeth that will be falling out soon was excessive & overpriced.
