Sumikawa D.D.S Lauren Jenni Imai, D.D.S I remember my small kid days, my dentist was Dr. David Sumikawa's Father, located on Young St. This was also Dr.David Sumikawa's dental office before moving to Kapiolani. It sure brought back memories when I first took my kids to the Young St. location. I miss the treasure chest, where you can pick toys after your dental visit. Now Dr. David has them in his drawer. This is really a great thing for the kids, I fell for it, this is what I look forward to when I was a kid going to the dentist, I'm pretty sure the kids look forward to the prizes after dental procedure. The not so great part of seeing Dr. David Sumikawa, He is a very popular/busy dentist so his appointment fills up fast!! Dr. David Sumikawa also travels to Kauai for his practice there.If you need to see the dentist sooner, the office staff does/try their best to get you an appointment, only if there is a cancellation. They will also call you the day before your appointment for reminder. The office staff are super friendly!! ( Nicky, Erma, Jaime- sorry, I may spell your name wrong) My kids are big now ( teens & late teens) but I don't recall that they ever grumble about going to the dentist. They really enjoy every visit. All my visit to the Dentist, I have to take off from work. & my kids will either miss 1-2 hour of school day. Since I have to take the first available appointment ( date/time) Tips: so your child doesn't miss part or all of school day/ get an 8:15 time slot or after school time. After your child see Dr. David Sumikawa, he will call you in to go over the visit. Cavities, no cavities, need to floss, brush more, if you have any questions, etc. This is awesome!! You will also get a form with information of day's visit. There is also a no cavity prize, if you have no cavity during your visit, you get to enter your name in a drawing for gift. I really like that you get called right after checking in/your appointment time, no wait!! No wait @ all!! The office is located on Kapiolani , on the 10th floor, with validated parking. The office is very clean & the waiting area is kid & adult friendly. There are lots of magazines to read while you wait, a playing area for the kids, & also a television. They are amazing and make sure to keep the place Covid-19 safe. The Doctor did both of my daughters teeth. Him and the assistants made them feel safe and comfortable. And they had Happy Gas available when they had to get their fillings done. Which was very important to me. Would totally recommend this place. I have to be honest I hate the dentist. I don't know why but every since I was a little kid I had this fear. I wish I had been taken here when I was little. I am so grateful to my dentist Dr. Ronald Mau for recommending me to Pediatric Dental Group for my children. We have been coming here for about 6 years now and they are consistently great! The whole staff are extremely friendly and caring. In the beginning I had such a hard time with my daughter wanting to come to the dentist. She had such a fear that she would get anxiety and cry every time she knew we had an appointment. They have been so wonderful and supportive with her that now she has no problems and no more anxiety. Dr. Mark Sumikawa is such a stud!!! My son has been going to Dr. Sumikawa for as long as I can remember but last night I saw a commitment to his craft rarely seen these days. My son chipped his tooth playing in a basketball game and not only did Dr. Sumikawa take my wife's call but he met us at his office at 8:00 pm to take care of him. I just realized that I didn't leave a review for this AWESOME practice. How rude of me! Pediatric Dental Group (PDG) is located on the 10th floor of 1221 Kapiolani Blvd. across from Inspiration. The practice has 4 doctors: Bert, David, and Mark Sumikawa and Lauren Imai. The place is HUGE! When you walk in, you see the immaculate fish tank and coffee table. There are lots of magazine racks for parents, two televisions for the kiddos, and an activity table for the babies. There is a small counter for coloring and a wrap around cushioned bench for seating. The staff here are ALWAYS friendly and smiling. (I guess you have to be to wok in a pediatric dentist office.) The place smells VERY sterile. The Munchkin pointed that out today. I think it's comforting, for her it sets off warning bells. There are many exam rooms, more than 5, I think. I've never been back there. Parents are kind of discouraged after your child is a certain age. I am only familiar with the small,closet like room where the dentist tells me the status of my child's teeth. There are also prizes that they let the kids have after the cleaning. That always gets the kids in a good mood & ready to leave:) The doctors and staff here are the best. I have never had any issues with them. They go above & beyond to make sure the kids are comfortable, but get the job done. If my Munchkin is happy with this place, that's good enough for me! 56 read more

My children and I go to a general/family dentist and my children only come to Pediatric Dental Group when referred by our dentist for a procedure. I've recently had a horror story with another pediatric dental office which gave me a hard time when setting up an appointment for my daughter because I moved her from that particular office to their current family dentist. I guess their former pediatric dentists were butthurt, so they only would schedule her an appointment if she was returning to their office. With that being said, I'm glad we opted to stick with referrals to Pediatric Dental Group only and will never ask to be referred to "the other pediatric dentist office." The staff here is very welcoming and accommodating. My children never have to wait long to be seen and there's always activities in the waiting room for the short period of time before they're called in to see Dr. Sumikawa. read more

I decided to leave a one-star review for the following reason: this practice was strongly recommended to me by colleagues at UH-Manoa when I moved here with my 2 young children but, when I called to schedule an appointment, I was told that new patients can only be seen on weekday mornings. When I explained that, as a single mother without any relatives here, I could not afford to take a day off work, I was told that no exception could be made. You know those places where it seems like everyone is happy to work at?... no? ... well come here at 730 in the morning and experience the overwhelming sunshine that every employee exudes! Super friendly, super sweet staff and friendly pediatric dentist, Dr. Mark, just awesome! The first few years were rough on my kiddos... but any kid I know feared the dentist. This particular visit, all the fears vanished, kind of like magic! They really know what they are doing here. Each room has a tv that moves right above of the child as they lay down for their exam... Disney Jr. serves as a great distraction! They get to wear rad sunglasses to protect their eyes from the examination lights too. The cleaning takes the standard length of time (no magic will make scraping go any faster... except better flossing and brushing), the dental exam is quick, and the parental review at the end going over any findings is thorough - it's also where the kids pick out their toys. Honestly, everything here is like a smooth kid-friendly toothy-smiling operation, with extra sunshine... like these people should be Disney Castmembers or something. My son is now 2.5 and has been to the dentist a few times now. I hear horror stories of parents who dread the dentist because their kids struggle to sit or have to be held down. We've had wonderful experiences with Dr. David and my son even received a certificate in the mail and a crisp $20 bill for winning the "no cavity club" award for the month. Rooms are well decorated and tv shows that are age appropriate like Sesame Street was playing to allow for the dentist to clean my son's teeth. I would highly recommend! read more

My son's pediatrician referred us to Pediatric Dental Group and I couldn't be happier. We all have issues with going to the dentist and I was sure my son would absolutely dislike it. The first visit was a challenge...it took about 4 hygienists to hold him down. Yikes! But they did it with no complaints and were very gentle and caring towards him. Now, he doesn't mind going. Especially since all the rooms have different themes and they each have a little tv that comes inches from your face so your child can watch a cartoon while getting their teeth checked out. My son's dentist, Dr. David, is outstanding and his staff is kind and very easy to talk with. I would definitely recommend PDG...in fact I have already referred a few of my friends to them. read more

Our children have been seeing Dr. David for years. And through the years, they've had just about everything done...cleanings, tooth pulling, cavity filling. But the key here is that my children have had that done without complaint and without any irrational fears of the dentist forming. Each dental room is painted in a fun theme and last I checked, the kids can lay back and watch a tv that's above them while the dentist works on their teeth. PDG does ask that parents stay in the waiting room while kids are having their cleanings. If there's anything that needs to be discussed, they'll call you back. Otherwise, you'll wait until your child is done and then meet with the dentist afterwards to see how they did (and let the little ones pick a prize). read more

She's not a fan of having her teeth cleaned but Dr. Mark and the dental assistants always comfort her. They're so kind. The office is clean and we're always seen promptly. My review is strictly for the front desk!! I was helped by Nikki and even though I decided against the appointment I'm so happy with the customer service I received. My regular pediatric dentist is on vacation and my son has a baby tooth with silver cap that refuses to fall. Nikki squeezed me in and I left my info with her. Within 15 min of making the emergency appointment she called me back to let me know that my insurance wasn't accepted and to give me a run down of cost. Since the tooth is loose we are going to try and wiggle it around a little more before we cave and get a dentist's assistance. Nikki kindly asked me when our regular dentist was returning and let me know she would keep our info Incase it didn't fall out over the weekend and we needed help come Monday! If you have the proper insurance I would seriously recommend bringing your children here. Best customer service I've received in a long time! Scheduled my son's 1st Dental Appointment with Dr. Mark a month before and so glad I waited until then. Seriously I think this place is the epitome of children dentists. As soon as I walked into this place my eyes popped like a little kid that just got some candy. But yes I was immediately greeted by the staff and knew my sons name and the customer service was great. I filled out some paper work and let me son play with that huge puzzle activity toy. It was probably taller than he was. There was also a separate area for coloring, they had crayons and pictures on this long table which was just a smart idea! Waited less than 10 minutes before we got called in to see Dr. Mark. A dental assistant called us into Drs. office and he asked me a few questions about my sons brushing habits, bottle feeding and etc. He has really good bedside manners and very patient because my son wanted to get out of that room. Once we finished our chit chats he than took us into a dental room to do his exam. The room was very nice so kid friendly, don't remember much of it though. the most important thing though was there was a TV in there. It moved to however my son was sitting. It didn't work though, but I'm sure it works on the older kids. Drs. exam was quite fast and painless, I had my son sit on my lap and have his head lay on Drs. lap instead of the chair. Dr. looked at his teeth, how many he had and started flossing out his leftover lunch. My son of course cried but not screaming crying (I think, it may have sounded worse) but I could be wrong. And that was all to it. Then we went back into Dr. office where my son was awarded with a toy. I could elaborate more on this place but I know you busy moms don't have time to read paragraphs! All four of my children have been coming here since they were toddlers, as the dentists and office staff are awesome! I took one of my older children to another dentist (before going to PDG), that was a "traumatic" experience for both of us. He was terrified and crying and I was told to hold him down and then was "scolded" by the staff for not being able to "handle" my child. Of course I never went back after that ordeal and found the Pediatric Dental Group. The experience was totally different, the children go in there to see the dentist, no crying and screaming is heard, and they come out with a smile! I think my children, who are all in high school and college now, have been seen by all of the Sumikawa's at one time or another. I highly recommend them. read more

Our 5 year old had a cracked molar, so we took her in for an emergency appointment to Dr. Mark. He cleaned her teeth and helped us figure out a plan of action for what turned out to be a mouth full of cavities. So, a month and a half later, we took our daughter in for her first truly major dental appointment. She was seen on time and was finished in about 45 minutes, despite having 2 crowns, a tooth extraction and a filling. And, like most people who fear the dentist, she had gone to a dark place in her mind in anticipation of both her dental visits. However, I think Dr. Mark has built quite a bit of trust because she came home feeling braver for the experience and more confident about future visits. She will have to go back in to have the other half of her mouth worked on, but I think she's a lot more at ease mentally about it all. The office must be popular with their patients because our first visit was on August 29th and when I tried to book the second appt, The earliest I could get was mid Oct. The earliest for an after school appt was December! The building is easy to find, but parking spaces are small. It is nice that they fully validate your parking though. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because we had some administrative issues with the insurance. We provided our insurance info and a copy of what our policy covers, but when they submitted our first claim, PDG showed me as the primary insurance policyholder. Since it is under my husband, the claim was denied. We were sent the bill about a month later. So, after spending time making phone calls to HR and to the dental insurance company, we figured out it was not an issue with coverage. We figured it out when we called PDG to confirm that our daughter is on the policy and that she is indeed covered for the services. That is when we learned they submitted the claim incorrectly. They were able to resubmit it though, so it was just a little of our time to get it sorted out. Not a big deal in the long run, but definitely nerve wrecking to get a $160 bill for a consultation and tooth cleaning when you are expecting a ton of work to be done a few weeks later. So glad it worked out though because the actual dental work was done well and our daughter feels great! read more

LOVE this place although it is far from home the workers are amazing. My 2year old is scared of the dentist but they are awesome. I feel bad for the ladies cause my daughter is a fighter. Fantastic peds dentist! Received a recc from a friend to take our 2yo son here for his visit dental visit and we could not have been happier. All the staff is very friendly and perfect with kids and the the office itself is amazing for kids-fish and movies and toys and galore and the exam rooms are super fun! I have been to this dentist when they we're located by McKinley high school. I use to be a patient of the father... Now my daughter goes to them, the sons of Dr.Sumikawa. wish I couldve continued my dental care with this office. Thats how awesome they are. They are the best pediatric dentist. When my baby had quest she as able to get in as a new patient. But if I'm not mistaken, they aren't excepting new patients with quest... so if you have other insurance, high recommend them.They take their time in doing work,very gentle with my daughter and very concern do when there are problems that needs to be addressed. My daughter being at 5 years old coming into this office, never gave them a hard time due to the doctor and staff being so gentle and awesome... office setting is the best for a child.
