Let me start by saying, I am so happy we chose Dr. Juliana Hsu to perform our son's lip and tongue tie procedure. We were referred to her by our lactation consultant, Mihoko Yacavone, who is also amazing. We had an excellent experience with Dr. Juliana Hsu. We first discovered his ties through meeting with our lactation consultant for difficulties with breast-feeding and poor weight gain. He had a weak latch and wasn't efficient in emptying my breastmilk. Once learning about his tongue and lip ties, I was also concerned about his mouth breathing and quality of sleep, proper palate formation, tongue posture, jaw alignment, future dental issues, speech issues, and difficulties with feeding. Before the consultation, Dr. Juliana Hsu spent time answering all my questions . At the consultation , Dr. Juliana Hsu, was very welcoming and professional. She was very thorough in evaluating our son, explaining what ties are, how they impact the quality of life, and what to expect with the procedure. She also explained the importance of postoperative stretches. She took her time to demonstrate the stretches as well as allowed me to practice. Which I found helpful! I was a bit nervous the day of the procedure and even second guessed our decision as we walked into her office. Of course we went through with the procedure and were super happy with the results. At the time our son was 8 weeks. To our amazement, the procedure was super quick. Everything went well and we were super pleased with the quality of care we received. Immediately after the procedure, our son was handed to me and I nursed him right there in the office. He was able to latch and I felt a noticeable difference which shocked me. I never knew how powerful a muscle the tongue really is! Dr. Juliana Hsu followed up that night and the next day. Her thoroughness, knowledge, expertise, and compassion really made for a smooth and successful experience. The post operative stretches were definitely tough in the beginning but it got easier. Dr. Juliana was easily accessible and could be reached by phone which I loved, and she was very quick in her responses providing lots of positive reassurance. With that, we were much more confident in our decision and ourselves as parents to do the stretching well. She always made us feel comfortable. Fast forward, our son is 5 months and thriving! He is doing so well. His tongue healed perfectly and we are so glad we followed through with our decision to have the procedure done. I had an excellent experience with Dr. Juliana Hsu for my son's lip, tongue, and cheek tie releases. Prior to the procedure, he had strong ties that made breastfeeding very difficult -- he couldn't latch properly, wasn't able to fully empty milk, and took a very long time to feed. I was in excruciating pain at each feeding and often had to pump in addition to nursing. As a dentist myself, I was also concerned about his long-term jaw development, especially since his mouth opening was limited and his chin was retruded. Dr. Hsu spent a lot of time on the phone beforehand explaining the procedure and what to expect, which immediately gave me confidence. At the appointment, she thoroughly evaluated my son and clearly explained the importance of post-operative stretches. She even made sure I could practice and demonstrate the stretches before we left, and she provided gloves for me to use. The procedure itself was very quick -- less than 10 minutes -- and thanks to the soft tissue laser, there was no bleeding. To my amazement, my baby wasn't even crying afterward and latched to breastfeed immediately, with a noticeably improved latch and much less pain for me. Dr. Hsu followed up that night and kindly even offered to meet again the next day to review stretches. I am so grateful for her thoroughness, expertise, and compassion. I wanted to put this review to help parents make an informed decision. I took my 3 month old in with the recommendation of my lactation consultant as she was having bad reflux. Dr. Hsu made an appointment ahead of time for the frenectomy surgery without seeing her, which was strange to me. I think my daughter had a mild tie, but if I were to do it all over again I wouldn't get a frenectomy. After cutting dairy out we found out that my daughters reflux was due to that and not a tongue tie. We felt played as we soon found out our LC, Dr. Hsu and the chiropractor all refer each other and many other families were seeing the same 3 providers. fast forward 3 months and my daughter has struggled with breast feeding and bottle feeding and it's been a nightmare. shes been on a nursing strike for 2 months and has dropped percentiles. (I'm not saying the frenectomy caused it) but I felt like I was rushed into doing it when my daughter was nursing great to start. I wonder what her nursing journey would be like if we just waited. my daughter won't take the dairy free formulas, so I've been having to pump for every feed. she use to nurse great. the process is grueling, rubbing the wound every 4 hours for weeks. (having to wake her up to rub the wound) it's really sad. I totally understand why a frenectomy is important for severe tounge and lip tie, but It felt like there wasn't enough examination on if it was really necessary. I wish we never got it. read more

Please Note the surgery I'm talking about is commonly performed on babies, please know this review is for my surgery which was performed on me as an adult in February 2025. I was referred to Dr Julie for my tongue tie. Before surgery I did the required myofunctional physical therapy first with Lisa Forbes. Lisa was amazing and answered all of my questions and concerns as we went through the exercises and follow ups. I do not think I could find a better myofunctional therapist if I interviewed 100 of them. Lisa is easy to talk to, professional, patient, kind, very knowledgeable and informative. She makes it very obvious that she has a true and genuine passion for her work! Thank you so much Lisa! Once the myofunctional therapy was completed, Dr Julie did my tongue tie surgery. Dr Julie and her staff were very communicative, friendly, and knowledgeable. Dr Julie personally checked in with me after my surgery. I completed my post-surgery myofunctional exercises and finished the PT associated with post-surgery care. It has been almost four months since my surgery and my results have been incredible! My lifelong neck, shoulder, upper and lower back pain have resolved. I have also noticed the entire length of my legs have a decrease in fatigue and aches at the end of the day. My feet also hurt less when the day is over. I have fewer headaches and the ringing in my ears, which I have had since childhood, has resolved itself. The biggest improvement has been my quality of sleep. I was shocked to discover the reason why I was tired even after a full night sleep was because I was not breathing properly during the night. Before surgery I used to wake up every few hours throughout the night. Since my surgery I have been sleeping throughout the night. For the first time in my life I feel truly rested and not groggy in the morning. Dr Julie also provided me with the best and most detailed driving and parking instructions I have ever received from a medical office. THANK YOU! I have driving anxiety and get very anxious if I have to find somewhere to park when I have to go to new places or areas that are very busy. The feeding journey of my little one has been very challenging. Born prematurely at 34 weeks because I had severe preeclampsia, my son has had a hard start to life. He was born with congenital pneumonia and had to be intubated, on antibiotics and had a 6 week stay in the NICU. When his lungs finally healed from the pneumonia, the last hurdle he had was getting full feeds in. We struggled for 3 weeks, he would only take a little by bottle or by breast and they would have to gavage (feeding tube) the rest. Feeding seemed like such an issue for him and would tire him out so severely. We attributed this a lot to 1) his prematurity and 2) his body recovering from the pneumonia and needing to build up that endurance. We struggled to feed coming home - where a lot of kids eventually get into the groove of feeding every 2-3 hours, my son would feed every hour, sometimes 30 mins, sometimes we could get to every hour and a half. I moved to trying to breastfeed him exclusively from week 2 at home and it was horrible. He would latch and unlatch and he wouldn't last more than a few minutes on each side. He would scream incessantly during and after each feed. First time and unknowing parents, we attributed that to his reflux. Two weeks went by of this occurring every feed, every hour, when I happened across Dr. Julie after having been referred by both a friend and eventually a lactation consultant. We discovered he was struggling to transfer only a small portion of his usual feeding amount. He also struggled by bottle to build endurance on feeding and coordinating his suck-swallow. He was diagnosed with a posterior tongue tie, lip tie and cheek ties. There are three medical studies I found about these mouth ties since they are not widely recognized by the medical community if you are not dealing with mouth/airway development on a regular basis and most only recognize the anterior tongue tie where the whole tongue is restricted (review Kotlow if you're interested). Dr. Julie was great working with us to schedule us in - we had been conservative in our decision and had waited a few weeks from our first diagnosis to finally make the leap. The parking lot that the office validates for has no elevator so just know you have to walk down the ramps and carry the stroller down one short flight of stairs. Dr. Julie is great at doing her education about what isn't working when your baby has mouth ties and what has to happen after the release. She also thoroughly explains to you what ramifications mouth ties can have as the child ages up and eventually becomes an adult. My husband has a tongue tie (that we've discovered from this experience) and as a child dealt with an underdeveloped jaw and needed a palate expander, a stutter, ADD, now has to deal with sleep apnea that a CPAP does nothing for (he basically tapes his mouth shut now to achieve better sleep) and we wanted to avoid that for our son. She also prepares you before the procedure to do the stretches you'll have to do in your little one's mouth post-procedure to make sure the wounds heal correctly (and not back thicker and tighter in an incorrect manner). The procedure took 10 mins and we just went next door to grab a snack while we waited. After coming back I was able to breastfeed him in the mins post procedure and it felt so completely normal. Usually I have pain where I can feel my son's gumline chomping on me but I didn't have any of that and you could tell he was able to get a deeper latch. Dr. Julie called us that night to check up on us (which was unexpected and nice) and has been checking up on us by text as my son heals. The journey in feeding post-procedure has his ups and downs. Apparently he had the worst posterior tongue tie she's ever seen (you never want to be the worst of something, haha.) But you can tell he's recalibrating how to eat so some feeds have been amazing, for example he took 100mls from the bottle yesterday, finished and was a happy clam after burping (whereas he used to abjectly scream just trying to eat 30 mls). And some feeds are still rough where he takes 20mls and screams his head off. This week we've seen it taking off where we're getting more better feeds than not. He's back to breastfeeding and I still can tell the difference in the depth of latch and his tongue is getting stronger. After paying for my month long stay in the hospital and my son's NICU stay, this was an added out of pocket cost that we did not take on lightly but I have to say we're 100% happy we did it. He's eating better and getting better at doing it and he's a much more happier baby, being able to sleep longer between feeds and sleep more calmly on his back. In the end, we look at it as setting him up for the rest of his life. So if you're on the fence about it, I highly recommend it and recommend Dr. Julie - she's super personable and excellent at what she does. read more

We were referred to Dr Julie through our Lactation consultant after we were told our daughter and a tongue tie AND a lip tie. Dr Julie & Kelly were both SO sweet. They made us feel welcomed. I had to bring along my 3 year old, and just the way they would speak and interact with him, made me feel comfortable. We came to see Dr. Julie after our lactation consultant told us our baby's issues could be from her tongue and lip tie. I didn't plan to have the procedure done at the consult but after talking with Dr Julie and understanding the benefits we decided to proceed with the tongue and lip release. It has helped significantly with our baby's colic, eating, and sleeping habits. The post procedure stretches are tough but I believe well worth it to prevent reattachment. My baby was having issues with latching and acid reflux, so my lactation consultant suggested I reach out to Dr. Julie. After the consultation, I found out my 2-month-old baby had both a tongue- and lip-tie. My husband and I were a little overwhelmed and hesitant at first to have the ties revised, but Dr. Julie explained everything to us and answered all our questions regarding the procedure. She and Tori helped us feel more at ease about everything. We decided to go through with it and we don't regret it at all. After the surgery, which only lasted several minutes, I was able to nurse right away and saw a huge difference in latching. I'm so glad we went to Dr. Julie to treat our baby's tongue and lip ties. After working with our lactation consultant we were referred to Dr Julie for a consultation. Dr Julie is very knowledgeable in tongue/lip ties and it shows. She spoke to us about the various effects (besides nursing) tongue and lip ties can have on feeding, breathing and sleeping. We decided to have our son's tongue and lip ties released. Before the procedure Dr Julie showed us how to do the post procedure stretching exercises and had us do them in front of her to make sure we did them properly. The procedure itself was very quick and we felt comfortable that our baby was in good hands with Dr Julie and her assistant Tori. Once it was done they gave me time and privacy to nurse in the room. I felt an immediate difference in my baby's latch! The hardest part of doing the release is the 4 weeks of aftercare which includes tongue/lip stretches every 4 hours, but it is worth it. Dr Julie provided great support during this time. She called the night of the release to check in and answer our questions and concerns. She was also available by text in the following days which was very convenient for us. We also had a 2 week follow up so Dr Julie could ensure everything was healing properly. We have seen improvements in nursing, less reflux, longer stretches of sleep and less mouth breathing. I only wish we did it sooner! I only wish Yelp gave 10 star reviews because that is what Dr. Hsu truly deserves for the service and care that she has provided us as a family. I came to Dr. Hsu after our lactation consultant helped us exhaust all our options in breastfeeding. Exhausted, physically and mentally drained, I waddled over to Dr. Hsu's office where I sat outside, holding my tiny 6-week-old in my arms, and cried while my husband checked us into our appointment. From the start, we were greeted by one of the pediatric dentist assistants, who knelt down to see the tears in my eyes, and comforted me in knowing how far of a journey we had already gone through to get to where we were that day. Her calm and reassuring demeanor was just the start of such a wonderful experience that my husband and I witnessed for our tiny baby. Once we were inside and met Dr. Hsu, she listened intently to what our concerns were and first walked us through what she could do that day if she were to find a tongue and lip tie. She gave us many different scenarios of what we could or didn't have to do that day which included us deciding not to do it even if she did see a tongue and/or lip tie. She noted that we were the ultimate deciders of the scenario and that she could help in any way that she'd like us to. After Dr. Hsu checked our baby's mouth and concluded that there was some tightness in her tongue and lip tie and that she believed it would help benefit our breastfeeding, we then both decided that it was the best option. We then handed our crying baby off to Dr. Hsu, who then cradled her gently and made (I'll never forget this) her whole body rock up and down, tipping up on her toes and then back down again, while making soothing shooshing noises, as she made her way into the next room to perform the procedure. It was the most beautiful and gentle thing I witnessed a complete stranger do for our little one (other than our OB!) AND to top it off, our baby girl stopped crying. After the very quick procedure was over, she came back and handed her off to me, helped to recline the dentist chair, dimmed the lights, and allowed us to have the room to ourselves to instantly breastfeed our baby. After we left, and received detailed and important instructions on the "stretches" of her lip and tongue for the next month, my husband and I followed through and worked hard on the instructions provided (to keep the tissue from growing back firmer). That was the hardest part of the whole procedure but completely worth it as I was able to breastfeed my baby successfully for her entire first year! Though the stretches were the most difficult part, we had Dr. Hsu checking up on us and comforting us throughout our journey. I saw Dr. Julie as a second opinion after being dismissed by a lactation consultant regarding my concerns. Dr Julie and Her assistant Tori are so amazing! They were so good with my son during his tongue tie release, which was actually a very quick treatment that has helped his entire development! They are also amazing at educating parents at what a tongue tie is and how it affects the body and a baby's over all development. Hands Down... Dr. Hsu is a gift from the heavens! After my wife exhausted almost all options that were provided from our lactation counselor. We were desperate, concerned and running low on morale. The option to receive consultation from a Frenectomy Specialist has changed my families lives forever. Not only was the procedure a success, but the most important/memorable experience from the entire ordeal, was Dr. Hsu's dedication to ensure that she gave the best after care. She would call and check up to get a status and this was all between our follow up appts. Breastfeeding was horrible in the beginning. Needless to say, I was in pain, bleeding, and depressed that this supposed blissful time you should be bonding with your baby was instead a complete nightmare. Lo and behold, my daughter was diagnosed with a tounge & lip-tie which affected her ability to latch properly. I was thankfully referred to Dr. Juliana Hsu, who recommended she undergo a frenectomy in order to improve her latch and also decrease her risk of having speech and airway issues. Fast-forward, the procedure was quick and painless, under 10 minutes. The most difficult part of the whole process was definitely the recovery bc you're expected to do stretching and sucking exercises of the tounge and lip every 6hrs for 4 WEEKS! It was incredibly difficult to do these exercises, especially bc my baby cried every single time. And if you decide to quit, the tounge tie can reattach! There was NO way I was going to quit and start from the beginning! BUT after all is said and done, she latched like a champ! You can't put a price on the beautiful breastfeeding journey I had from then on. Dr. Hsu was a godsend for me and so supportive throughout this difficult time. Last year, we met with Dr. Hsu for our 4-year-old's routine cleaning. Our son had a deep cavity on one side. Dr. Hsu explained that she also noticed he had a tongue tie. We explained to her that our son would always pocket his food on the same side where he had a deep cavity. She explained that the function of the tongue has when chewing and moving food around the mouth and that with a tongue tie that becomes difficult leaving food left on one side of the mouth. He was also very picky with different textures, usually opposing meat products. Our son also struggled with articulation and Dr. Hsu explained how a frenectomy would be beneficial. After some inquiries and research, we decided to schedule the surgery. Dr. Hsu and Shriners were exceptional on the day of surgery. We were sent home the same day. We were given a reasonable amount of time for him to sleep and eat a little something at the hospital (not the case with our past experiences in other hospitals). We were given thorough instructions on recommended tongue exercises. If you can, order bite blocks and tongue depressors from Amazon ahead of time. His healing was quick and didnt complain of any pain. His surgery was on Friday and he had no problem going back to school on Monday. At our follow-up, Dr. Hsu didnt hesitate to write a recommendation for speech therapy. With his pediatrician on board, and two letters of recommendation we were able to get added speech therapy to what he was currently receiving. This time around we were able to get more services for articulation. Within a few weeks, we notice an improvement in his eating and speech articulation. Dr. Juliana Hsu diagnosed my son with a lip tie and a tongue tie. But wanted us to go for a lactation consultation first as she mentioned they are the experts to diagnose a tongue tie and said a lot good things about Mahinaona pediatric so we went to Mahinaona where they mentioned my son do not have a tongue tie . After going back to Dr.Juliana Hsu , she said that my son definitely has a tongue tie , said - not sure why Mahinaona (very famous and reputed lactation consultation clinic in Hawaii ) said that he does not have it . When we asked if we cure at least the lip tie , she mentioned I DO NOT DO ONLY LIP TIE , not sure what kind of statement was that as a person with only a lip tie will not be cured here . After that she mentioned that she will send us another lactation consultant contact but it's been a month , no one has contacted us . Really not sure why didn't she went with the procedure if she was so sure about the tie. We also took our elder daughter 4 year old , she diagnose her as well with a tongue tie . VERY VERY UNPROFESSIONAL AND PATHETIC experience , definitely not coming back here at first smiles . Wasted my time and money here . read more
