Not uncommon to be able to get close to deer on horseback!

This is my third time coming back here and I will continue to come here every year! This time I managed to get the entire family here (husband and 2 boys) and had an amazing riding experience as always. My husband and I are larger people but we still love to ride. They currently have 3 horses that can accommodate us. We travel almost 3.5 hours from Pittsburgh to come here. This is a riding experience for more adventurous riders as the terrain is rough and you need to be an active participant. The trails are gorgeous and the horses are top of the line as is the riding equipment. You just cannot beat the price for what you get. Becky also offers a discount if you come early to groom. We always take this opportunity, not so much for the discount, but for the bonding experience you will have with your trail horse. My husband rode Stroker, a percheron who is as sweet as he is big! I rode my favorite sassy girl, Mysti'k. You have to be an "involved" rider with her as she is "old enough to know better, but young enough not to care." Personally, I enjoy riding a horse that is not on auto-pilot. My youngest rode "his gal" Lucy. Also a little sassy (Mysti'ks mama), but a solid trail horse. My older son has the least experience. Instead of choosing a horse for him, Becky suggested he spend time with both Black Jack and Hot Shot to see which one he bonded with. Black Jack was it! Even though you could pretty much shoot a cannon off this horse's back, Becky spent time with my son making sure he was comfortable and would have a great ride. Which he did! My younger son and I are planning on returning in the spring so we can do an even longer and more active trail ride.

My mom grew up riding and training horses and while it's been years, I thought it would be a great 60th birthday gift to go riding in Hocking Hills. After a few searches online, I found this place. The booking was easy and the owner, Jackie, was very attentive and communicative throughout the process. The weather was absolutely perfect on the day we arrived and we were part of a small group including two others, making it 4 total, which was honestly ideal. We were greeted with a warm welcome and Jackie got straight to introducing us to our paired horses. She was great at putting us each with a horse that would go well with our riding experience. I got Duke, who was a sweetheart from start to finish. He did a fabulous job and I had no problems at all. He was just as Jackie explained he would be. After getting our mini riding lesson, away we went. We rode through beautiful meadows and even through the forest with high trees, downed logs, and a ton of brush. Every single one of the horses did great. They loved to stop to eat and Jackie knew all the good spots for "cheesecake." That's what they called the horse's favorite snack. Funny, because that's my favorite too! We rode around for just over an hour after getting our lessons and it was wonderful. Everyone had a blast and I would totally go again, only for a longer ride next time. I highly recommend it!

I checked beginner, and told them I had no experience riding a horse I HIGHLY recommend beginners stay away from this location. This type of negligence could cause serious harm. I was told that my horse "June" had ADHD and got distracted very easily. This was a complete understatement. The gentleman who was giving the "safety " talk seemed bothered and completely put out that he had to be there. If I would have known I needed to be an equestrian to ride here, I would have went somewhere else. But we didnt know, I let them know I was inexperienced and they ignored that fact even after the waiver we filled out and not once, but twice I asked to get down and that I was not in contol of this 900-2,200 lbs beast. I stressed to the handlers this. They told me I'd be fine and reshowed me how to "control" June. See, I was with June for about an hour and I realized real quick that she needs a more experienced and firmer handler than what they put on her. (Me) The problems started early, pretty much as soon as I got on. During our beginner two hour ride my horse June, decided to show me how much she truly did not give and ounce of care that I was doing all the things they showed me to control her. She was in charge and I was just there for the ride. Which was the most frightening experience of my life, and I served in the army. I am also a registered nurse and have been in some really frightening situations. The trails we were on were poorly kept. It wasn't her fault, the trails were just so unsafe. If this had been a young child i worry the day would have ended much worse. The trails were very very poorly kept, entire trees were down on the trail. There were ditches of mud which we were warned about but this definitely was not a trail for a bunch of beginners. June would not stay on the trail no matter what I did and the trail guide just kept yelling to kick her or pull the reins (WHICH I WAS DOING). very aggressively I might add. Then I was seriously worried she would just get spooked and bolt. I didnt trust myself, june or the ranch hands not one bit. This caused a lot of small injuries, at one point my horse decided to freak out and started to scramble backwards on a steep slope, by doing this, she pushed my sister who was behind me on the horse named Elsa into a tree which subsequently pinned her knee between the very large horse and a very unforgiving tree. I was struggling to "force" June back on the trail and not get taken out by trees as she forged their own path due to her "adhd" I just held close to her and tried to avoid the worst of the branches and tree trunks. I'm very surprised by the large amount of positive reviews here, I'm never one to complain about a service but I feel obligated because I really do feel like this is an unsafe environment. I dont want a refund, I am not asking for anything, I just want to know how a business is ran this unsafely and are still able to operate without any governance. I also want people to be warned. Our group unfortunately didnt do their due diligence and scour the reviews, but again not our fault completely, this place should not have been able to have 10+years of tormenting unsuspecting novice riders with their incompetence. This place has a waiver, I appreciate this, but when a customer explicitly says they are not good at something as dangerous as this could be, it is the businesses responsibility to be transparent about what said customer are getting themselves into. Like I said, I hate to complain, I really never make posts like this. However, if I help avoid one serious injury caused by this locations negligence then it is worth it in this case. Don't risk injury at this location, go somewhere else.

Off the main road was a sign that let us know we were in the right place. There was plenty of parking next to their big barn. We were told to check in at the office and then go back to the stables. We were offered helmets if we wanted but it was not a requirement. I opted to wear one while my husband did not. We were part of a group with 4 other people. Our lead was very nice and funny, and she quickly gave instructions. She had us sit on the horses and she adjusted our feet into the stirrups. My horse snacked a lot and it was difficult to move them away from various plants. However, overall all of the horses were well behaved and listened. We did the trail that was 2 hours. I've ridden horses before, but 2 hours was a lot. If you are not experienced or used to sitting in a horse I would suggest the 1 hour trail ride. We saw a cool tunnel but we essentially went through it and then turned around and went back. We had a good time and my husband loved it. I would just be warned on which trail ride you use based on your experience

The camp is smaller than you would imagine from the website but the majority of sites on the grounds give you the amenities you would need, there is potable water sites sprinkled through the grounds as well as outhouses for men and women across the sites. The main part i enjoyed was how few other campers i saw i have heard that the main state park campground can get crowded but palmerosa does not have that problem at all, when i arrived i was even given the opportunity to swap to a more preferred site upon seeing the options in person (although i cant say this is a ground rule). Speaking to that the staff was wonderful we met one nice gentleman who accommodated us with our questions and equipment and was all around helpful and friendly. Palmerosa also allows horses which i cant speak much to as i didnt do that but we saw one group with two horses and those horses looked happy and the people taking care of them looked satisfied. In my opinion palmerosa is the perfect spot for someone who wants tread the line on primitive camping while its out of the way and secluded but close enough to attractions and town for you to not be far from fun. Thanks for an amazing trip
