BEWARE: SAVE YOUR CLOTHES AND YOUR MONEY. I had a dress absolutely ruined. This same thing has happened to many of my friends who have used this service. They charged me a ridiculous amount of money for subpar hemming and rips along the fabric that looks like a 5 year old with scissors hacked away at it. The lady did not do what I asked, instead she destroyed my dress. I had specifically told her not to cut the train of my dress and she cut off all of the fabric. Asked for a refund and she refused to give me one unless she could fix it, which she can't because you can't really add a train back onto a dress? She also rudely hung up on me it was the worst customer service I've ever received. So no refund. Money lost. Expensive dress ruined and can't be fixed. Avoid this place entirely. read more

I wish I'd visited yelp before we brought our things to this cleaner. We brought in tons of shirts and blazers to be dry cleaned, a total of around $130. Let me count the ways I was disappointed: 1) my husband went to pick up our dry cleaning at 3 on Sat. Though their website says they close at 4 they were already closed down and entirely empty. 2) my shirt was stained. New stains it didn't previously have, looked like blood. I just left another dry cleaner who got them out. 3) shirts had staples in them 4) blazer still had stain. I really hate writing bad reviews, and I think this is one of a handful I've ever written, but I want you to save your money, time, and heartache. These people should not be in business. read more

Awful customer service. Do not ask for alterations or sewing unless you want your clothes ruined! Blue Jays sucks. They're also rude.

This place has one great thing going for it: location. It's the easiest place to drop stuff off for any Yale student or anyone living near Broadway. They are also pretty fast in turn around. That said, the price is a lot higher than other dry cleaners in the area. Also, I tried having a button sewed back onto my winter jack and it fell off after a month. I then had them add it again and told them what happened -- but it fell off again in another month. I'd probably use this place for dry cleaning needs out of convenience but not alterations or sewing. read more

I would caution against using this dry cleaner. They shredded the fabric on my graduation robe and hood. I picked it up days before graduation and I was incredibly panicked by this. They gave me a refund but it does not cover the expense of having to buy a whole new cap and gown. read more

I saw earlier reviews from years ago and they don't seem to be applicable to the service I received. Everything went smoothly and I'm happy with my clothes. Maybe management changed, but this business no longer deserves its low rating. read more

Blue Jay Cleaners - They ruined two pairs of my jeans - Sewing & Alterations Near Me - New Haven, Connecticut

It's a wonder anyone even offers alterations anymore. Sewing is difficult work and making imperfect clothes fit better or look better is often a thankless task. That said . . . I tried this place out by having them hem some brand new dress pants. They did a lovely job. They also hemmed some casual pants that had been too long, and I had damaged a bit by wearing them in the dirt and snow. Again, nice work. They always asked to charge my credit card before the work was done, but after the first time around, I trusted them. I was feeling good about Blue Jay dry cleaners and alterations. But then I came in with a big order - clean a sweater, shorten the sleeves of a jacket, fix some buttons on a pair of pants, remove some jacket shoulder pads . . . lots of this and that, and we talked it over carefully, and my receipt listed all the work to be done. But when I picked up the clothes the buttons hadn't been fixed (they dry cleaned the pants instead), while the sweater wasn't any cleaner and had developed a hole!! My receipt showed what I'd originally asked for, so I thought a refund should be easy enough. But when I asked for a refund to my credit card, the proprietor - same person who took the order and did the work - offered me cash instead, and argued about the details. I didn't even mention to her that the shortened sleeves on the jacket were slightly uneven and looked kind of sloppy. I just asked her, "Are you sure this is how you want to resolve this?" She was, and I'll be looking for a new alterations place. Any suggestions? Please know that I'm not an impossible bitch. I had a great alterations lady in my old neighborhood. You never saw anyone in her shop that was any less than totally thrilled with her work. And I certainly never was. Sigh. read more

My experience may be anecdotal, but these cleaners ruined my blouse the first time i went there. I told them that my blouse needed the buttons removed before cleaning or they would be ruined, and despite nodding and saying ok, they did not remove the buttons and I picked up my blouse with now melted and bleached buttons. I haven't gone back since, but they are the only dry cleaners that are conveniently located for students. I also had the issue with paying cash which was very obnoxious. read more

The only good thing about Blue Jay Cleaners is it's location on Broadway. I have only used Blue Jay for dry cleaning. They are overpriced. But more concerning, they are not very careful with clothes (i.e. they've ripped delicate clothing). The woman at the front (Kyung) also really doesn't speak English and so despite me telling her not to pin a silk skirt to hanger, the skirt came back pinned and with holes. When I tried to speak to her about this, she got flustered and rolled her eyes, saying "not a big deal.: I am not sure if she couldn't understand me or just didn't care. When I've asked "does that makes sense?" she just nods. Don't go here! read more

The shopkeeper, an old lady, promised us to separately wash the color clothes and white clothes (already in separate bags) but it turned out that she did not bother and washed them together and messed up my newly bought T shirt and other clothings. Very bad - dont go there! She also does not provide a price list for any of the laundry service. We paid USD41 to wash a small amount of clothes! read more

Zero stars if I could. Rude, way overpriced, awful job. Took one cotton polo shirt there, showed them a stain I couldn't get out, and they charged me $7.75. I went back, and the stain was still there. I showed them the stain again, and they told me they hadn't seen it earlier but that they'd take care of it. Of course, at my second trip there, the stain was still as visible as before. They first tried to tell me it was gone--as if I couldn't see the stain. When I pointed at it (for the third time in 48 hours), they had to acknowledge that, yes, the stain was still there, but they told me they couldn't do anything about it. I asked for a refund, which was promptly and rudely refused. If you want to spend $7.75 and get your shirt back as dirty as it was when you dropped it off, then by all means go here. Oh, and l almost forgot: the second-to-last time I came here and used my brand new credit card, it got cloned. read more

What a B*TCH! I went in with a bag full of clothes to be cleaned in my hand and asked how much they charged to clean a shirt. The older woman working there who seemed like the owner told me $2.50. I thought that was too expensive and so I said thank you and began to walk out. She called out to ask me how much I thought it should cost. I said "about $1.75." She scowled at me and swiped her hand at me. I left and went to Ted's cleaners on Grove street and paid $1.85 per shirt. I guess it's good to see a business that thinks it's doing so well, that it can piss off a customer who walks in with a bag of dirty clothes and a handful of money, and make him take his money somewhere else. read more

Came here before reading scary reviews. Glad I did. Great, prompt service. Some of my shirts had some pretty gnarly stains which had set in the dryer. Pointed them out to the person running the register, was astonished to get the shirts back today--as good as new. Couldn't be more pleasantly surprised. read more

I can only review Blue Jay for dry cleaning and laundering, but I've had enough experience there to be satisfied with the job they do. They never charge extra for little bonus services on shirts and pants like buttons and easy spot treatment. Also, they are very timely and willing to get you the goods when you need them. Be warned: they just raised prices (again) on the standard laundered shirt. I'm nervous about finding out what else costs more next time. Like many other local small businesses, the credit card minimum is annoyingly high. That said, my clothes have never been damaged nor late in three years. Who can argue with that? Until there's a place as close to campus with the same reliability and better prices, I certainly can't! read more

The only good part about Blue Jay is the location, which is to say that there aren't many other options downtown. The woman who is always behind the counter is less than friendly--I attempted to pay with a credit card for my shirts, and all she said was "no. cash." This is despite the fact that they feature Visa/MC stickers. Apparently, they have a $20 minimum for credit card purchases, even though any limit at all goes against the Visa merchant agreement. I had a horrible experience with Blue Jay Cleaners. I brought them a very nice shirt with a small stain, and asked them to please try removing it. They didn't even try to remove it! They simply washed and dried it, ensuring that the stain became permanent. Truly terrible. read more

I had some drapes hemmed here. The Chinese woman who works there is mean, cranky, and rude to customers. I had to go back 3 times to get the hemming done right. I took two sets of drapes, each cost me $40, and when I came back with the second set and asked to have the 5% discount applied (which they offer to orders of $50 or more) she refused, since I didn't bring them both in on the same day. They are overpriced and rude - go somewhere else. read more

They over charge and incredibly unfriendly. I have also never been pleased with how they press my cloths after washing them. I try never to use this place and instead go to Ted's. My only problem is that there is no place that is a convenient walking distance for students. Even so I have walked more than a couple miles before just to get a jacket cleaned instead of going to Blue Jay which is literally next door. They suck. read more

Blue Jay Cleaners has ruined two of my favorite dresses by SHRINKING them. I don't understand how fabric can be shrunk when no water is involved. They seem to be unable to handle delicate materials like chiffon and synthetics that are also beaded. read more

My husband left his wallet in the pocket of his suit jacket and I brought his suit to Blue Jay Cleaners to be dry cleaned without realizing. He noticed his wallet was missing 2 days later- on Sunday- when Blue Jay Cleaners was closed. We were so worried that the wallet would be missing and that he wouldn't ever find it and were already calling our credit card companies to make sure no charges were made and to dispute any charges that were made- lucky for us, no charges had been made. I called Blue Jay first thing on Monday morning and the man who answered the phone was SO kind and said they were waiting for us to call, and that he wanted to call me but that I hadn't left my cell phone number on file. When I walked in to pick up the wallet and suit, the man was waiting there for me with a big smile on his face, happy to return the wallet. Nothing was missing in the wallet (and the suit was very well cleaned!). Yes, this place is a bit overpriced, but the location and honesty of the team can not be beat! I will definitely use them again and recommend them to anyone in the Yale/ Downtown New Haven area. read more

They are extremely overpriced and not kind to clothes. I had a suit dry cleaned there and it cost $22! They also didn't do a good job, and I really didn't like how they safety-pinned my skirt to the hanger, putting holes in the fabric. Don't go here. read more

if you value your clothes: don't go there. I had to pay 42$ for dry-cleaning a coat and a dress, not the cheapest of a price but I thought it might be worth it. but it wasn't. the coat is pretty nice and fine, nothing wrong with that; but the dress got ruined. it had dots on them and now it doesn't have any dots anymore. the service person just said "i don't know" repeatedly and didn't offer me anything; in the end she was mad that I did not wanted to pay for anything. ultimately, I didn't have to, but I guess that's the least thing she could do. read more
