Blue Heron - if you pass the sign, you've missed the driveway.
Jeff T.

We booked the Pelican Room at the Blue Heron five months in advance, knowing that it was Labor Day weekend and that reservations would disappear if we waited too long. It turned out to be an excellent choice in location and for comfort. The inn was located about 5-10 minutes from our friends' wedding rehearsal and ceremony locations, so we didn't have to rush to get to anywhere else on the island. Our hosts, Bogdan and Carol, made us feel very welcome from the moment we pulled into their parking lot. They were quick to give us a hand with our luggage and check us in to our large room. They even had a play pen ready for J to sleep in, had we not already brought our portable bassinet. The Pelican Room is the largest of the 4 rooms available at the Inn. It has a king bed, a day bed, its own full bathroom, and a nice little porch with a great view of the bay. Breakfast is served at a time that you can specify. Bogdan and Carol are great caretakers and they help give the Blue Heron that cozy feeling that you want in a bed and breakfast inn. Definitely worth staying here if you're ever on Orcas Island. 9/24/09 - it's a shame that the other two 5-Star reviews were removed due to reviewers' lack of reviews.

Kangaroo House B & B - So many beautiful details on the property

We rang the bell, looked around, called their number, but could not locate anyone. My wife and I decided to use the time to explore the island. Charles called, he had been out back doing yard work. When we arrived the second time, we were greeted by Charles with an apology and a tour. The home is tidy, eclectic and quirky. Our room was wonderful. Plenty of space, comfortable bed and charming. Another bonus of staying here was the breakfasts. The food is delicious and unexpected. I did not anticipate seared sushi grade tuna or oat pancakes that rival the best buttermilk pancakes. And the beauty of breakfast times is sitting with other guests along with Jill and Charles discussing everything from how it all began at the Kangaroo B&B to activities to do on the island. I have to say, with the exception of the amazing views from Mount Constitution, the water views from almost everywhere on the island and celebrating my wife, this B&B was a highlight of my trip.

They have a hot tub which is perfect for relaxing in during nice days and a working fireplace that feels cozy on the not-so-nice days. Jill and Charles were attentive to our needs in all the right ways. I was there for a trail running race and have celiac and they took extra steps to make sure I had gluten free options for food. My husband had their normal breakfast and said it was amazing. He hates pancakes but said the ones they made were incredible. Additionally they were very friendly and inviting to an LGBTQ+ couple staying there which made me feel safe and welcome. I look forward to going back in the future!

We loved the hot tub, the breakfasts, the dogs, and the welcoming people. We were celebrating our 10-year anniversary and it was perfect. We were unfortunate to be there when the water pump for the property broke on our second evening. We had been out cycling all day and desperately needed showers. So this meant no showers, no toilet, no hand washing, etc. etc. They gave us a pitcher of water so we could brush our teeth and a bucket of water to do 1 toilet flush. They were super nice and apologetic. They gave us a bottle of wine and a few pieces of nice soap as a consolation. That's the disappointment and why I knocked them down to 2 stars (it would have been a 1 star had the rest of the experience note been so nice). I know this was an unexpected event. And they should have refunded part of the not-inconsequential price for that night or offered a discount on a future stay. A bottle of wine did not change the fact that I went home from my birthday weekend filthy and dying for a bathroom visit. Running water is expected when you've spent $500 a night for a room.

There are so many positives I am sure I missed some. Location: Close to town (5min), also centrally located to head to any part of the island! County Setting (5 acres) with livestock you can feed! Our room had an en-suite bathroom that was clean and had modern fixtures. Wonderful hosts! Claudia, Tyrone & Sveva. Claudia made an amazing breakfast each morning. She even baked chocolate chip cookies daily, there was also coffee, tea, & hot coco available at any time for us to have from the kitchen. We really enjoyed feeding the Alpacas and Pygmy Goats. The animals were so adorable and friendly. My only con was our initial impression of the room as it did not have a TV. But as our stay went on, we thoroughly enjoyed not having a TV in the room, it allowed us to disconnect more and take in the beauty of the island and surroundings. They do have a family/tv room, but we never felt the need to turn it on. If you are looking for a little peace & quiet, with a great breakfast each morning that is included in your stay, you have to come and stay at the Trumpeter Inn Bed & Breakfast!!

This is a lovely property where seemingly every guest gets a water view. In the mornings I would raise the shades and watch geese and dear roam around the field that runs to the waterfront. As the day wore on, the resident goats, chickens, and pony took their turn in the yard and the tide moved in and out, constantly changing the scene and providing something new to see, hear, and photograph obsessively (a handful of pics capturing my willing subjects are uploaded here). The hosts are extremely friendly and, in my opinion, quite special in that they leave the degree of guest interaction entirely up to you. You receive directions to your accommodations with your email confirmation and can let yourself in without assistance. However, they are eager to make themselves available any time you have questions, want recommendations, need something, etc. To me, this makes PCF great for everyone from a family looking for guidance on an activity-filled vacation to a couple seeking privacy during a romantic getaway weekend. As described in other posts, the attention to detail here is phenomenal. The setting may be rustic, but the rooms are very nicely appointed and extremely clean. My suite had beautiful wood flooring throughout, a tremendously comfortable bed, and any amenity you could possibly need. Hair dryer? Check. Rainy day books and DVDs? Check. Complete set of kitchenware? Check. This last point was a nice selling point for me in particular. As a frequent solo traveler, I don't care a lot about dining out (it's a bit awkward on your own and it's a quick drain on the cash flow!). It was fantastic that the suite came with everything I needed to prepare my own food and the eggs from the hens and fresh veggies from the garden meant I had to buy very few supplemental items to complete my meals (check out the Eastsound Farmer's Market or ferry landing grocery store). I could go on and on, but I should leave some things for you to discover during your own stay. Needless to say, highly recommend Pebble Cove Farm!

We enjoyed the hot tub, bonfire, the garden, beachfront, and the use of the rowboats to and around the smaller island. We saw jellyfish, starfish, deer, eagles on the property not to mention the chickens, horse, and goats on the property. They provide a glass jar of milk and orange juice and are able to pick from the vegetables in the garden. The kitchen is not a full kitchen, but provides all the necessities needed to make a decent meal. The rooms were very nice, however, they use organic cleaning products. These products did not thoroughly clean the suite and would prefer stronger chemicals. The towels were stiff and rough on the body. We were here for my birthday and had 3 rooms reserved, but unfortunately 1 friend was unable to make it and tried to notify the staff via telephone but did not get ahold of anyone. My other friends were promised a room at 2pm, but was not ready until after 4pm. Needless to say the check-in wasn't smooth. The property is a great place and would come back, just a few hiccups along the way.

Check-in was done at the lobby. At the lobby one will also find a store and a coffee shop. Complimentary movies and games can also be checked out at the lobby to enjoy back at your lodging. The store offers a little bit of everything, from clothing to snacks. Complimentary ice machines are available. Bagged ice can be purchased though. Lower-level parking is limited and was completely full in the evenings. We were lucky enough to get a parking spot every time we returned from playing. Wheel barrel type carts located at the gate make transporting luggage effortless to rooms. Adirondack chairs are scattered about the edge of the property to enjoy sipping a beverage, reading or admiring the view. A fire-pit, community BBQ, picnic area and kids play area help pass the time while on-site. The paly area is at the lobby end for those who do not wish to have quarters near noise. The cabin we were given was number 10, a handicap unit. The very first cabin upon entrance and the furthest from the lobby and play area. Our cabin was clean and well equipped. Snug Harbor provided us the peace that we were seeking at the time. My one suggestion would be to offer fresh baked chocolate chip cookies in the lobby to establish a more personal touch.

The place is gorgeous! 57 acres of forest, a few trails including one up to a nice sunset bluff, and right on the beach (but an enviro-friendly 200 feet back, and nice preservation of the trees). This review is for the kayaking experience. We took a Saturday 9am paddle with Sandy (one-half of the owners). It was marvelous. They have the best-priced guided kayak tour on the island, and an excellent location to depart from. Sandy and Carl (her husband, the other owner), were friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable. They answered all kinds of questions about Island life, environmental policy, wildlife, kayaking, etc. The gear was in great shape and they even had long boats (for the 2 tall men in the group) and gloves and boots for all. 8 of us went out in 4 boats and Sandy expertly assessed the group's interests and skills and kept us all herded and engaged. We saw bald eagles, seals, and plenty of intertidal stuff. After hearing that none of us had pressing engagements, Sandy stayed out with us an extra half hour, at least (hard to tell time on the water). Overall, a fabulous experience. Well worth the money (oh, and they take credit cards).
