This place is a tourist trap, but for good reason. This huge restaurant spans 3 floors with the basement operating as a buffet option ($8.99 per child and $20+ for adults). I took a look, but was more impressed with the freshness, value and experience on the main floor with menu order options. The restaurant style reminded me of a re-imagined Amish version of Cracker Barrel with handmade oddities for sale. It was surprisingly busy with it being 4:30pm, and slightly annoying to learn the kids could not have the buffet if we were ordering from the menu because there are separate seating arrangements. We chose the restaurant side. Our waitress was bubbly and energetic... extremely thorough while maintaining a friendly neighborly vibe. She commanded the restaurant like it was her vocation and truly seemed pleased to serve her hungry patrons. Once she took our order and brought out our drinks we were delighted with a small homemade loaf of seed bread with real butter, apple butter, or Amish peanut butter (peanuts, honey, and marshmallow fluff mixed together) to top it with. As we enjoyed snacking, the two kids meals, and two adult dinners with soft drinks (they do not serve alcohol) came in around $75 total. The kids meal came with homemade fried (2) drumsticks, fries, drink and a cookie reserved for the end of the meal. Everything is homemade and my picky eater's gobbled it all up! Hubby ordered the fried chicken dinner and was happy enough, but both of us noted that our breast was slightly over cooked by a minute or so (slim margins, but made for a slightly dry and tough tasting breast). He loved his corn accompaniment, noting that it tasted like it was freshly cut from the cob. I opted for the Amish sampler plate and enjoyed the meatloaf, the breading of the fried chicken, the texture of the roast beef (though the seasoning could've improved), and the chicken stuffing with fresh carrots with a slight crunchy texture mixed in. The green bean side was good enough with the bacon, but lacking a crispy texture. The mashed potatoes and beef gravy were just okay. This gargantuan portion also came with a small side salad of leafy greens, a cucumber slice and grape tomato with dressing of your choice. Everything was good... so much food! I felt like I should've toiled on the farm all day to earn such a filling meal. For dessert we bought a homemade strawberry rhubarb pie to take home. Perfectly cooked (no soggy bottom) and wonderful texture and married flavors. The pie was worth it for $18 and if you stop by the visitor center you can get a $1 coupon. Just make sure to bring it in so they can staple it to the receipt for accounting. If we ever come back I may need to try the lemon meringue pie. The peaks were gorgeous and so tall! Pros: good home cooking. Homemade pies. Value prices for what you get. Cons: potential long waits, separate buffet from restaurant and some food lacking seasoning. read more

The food quality was quite disappointing here. Everything looked so good on the menu and I was so very hungry, I ordered the sampler platter because I couldn't decide. Kudos to the restaurant for having that option , otherwise I would have had to order multiple meals. Besides the fresh bread and butter - which was amazing- nothing tasted good. The fried chicken was soggy, the meatloaf was mostly bread, the beef had no flavor at all it tasted like it's been rinsed in water. The stuffing was basically just mushy bread with seasoning. The green beens were mushy frozen green beans, the baked apple was overly sugary and the flavor was just strange. The food was 2 stars at best. However, the service was 5 star, excellent. Our waitress was exceptionally attentive and generous with the free bread and helping us with the menu items. It's a very large restaurant and there were only a few us us dining there right after the holidays. There is a large interesting gift shop inside the restaurant and an entire bakery. Welp, I wasn't anticipating to be blown away by an Amish buffet, but here I am, writing about how I was blown away by an Amish buffet. Our party of six was brave and came on a Saturday at 5 PM. Our wait time was about 30 minutes. We spent that time salivating at the bakery and wondering what items would also be available at the buffet (spoiler alert: it's mainly pies). When we received our text that it was time to eat, we headed downstairs and found a clean table quickly. At each end of the room was a hot, savory buffet and in between were the salad bar and a dessert bar. I headed straight to the dessert bar and started with a creamy, dreamy peanut butter pie. YUM. From there, I headed to one of the savory buffets and could hear some grumbling from patrons. Much of the food was gone and hadn't been replaced yet. Sharing in their disappointment, I made do with what was available. My disappointment faded pretty quickly once I started digging in to my meal. Rice pilaf, fried apples, mashed potatoes, cheesy corn, sweet potato casserole...it was all tasty. After my first savory round, I headed to the other hot buffet, which appeared to not only have more food but also other options that weren't at the other buffet. I spooned more tastes onto my plate and headed back to my table. I was very surprised at how everything I ate was really good. There wasn't one "meh" offering! Food quality-wise, Amish buffet FTW. And no, I didn't stop there. I ended my gut-busting meal with a slice of German chocolate pie, a spoonful of Oreo pudding, some vanilla soft serve, and zero regrets. After this experience, Blue Gate gets four stars from me. Had the kitchen been able to keep up with the demand at the buffet, I'd deem it five stars. If I was to repeat this visit, I'd come either during lunch or non-peak hours; I would definitely come at Christmastime with the outdoor decor. It's merry and bright! read more

I had forgotten I reviewed this place in 2020. Not much has changed in terms of food quality since then. I had the Sampler Platter with Roast Beef, Chicken ( you have to request all white) and Meatloaf. The chicken was served hot and FANTASTIC! The roast beef was tender and the meatloaf didn't seem to mix well. The garden salad was nice, I always enjoy the sweet and sour dressing. The bread was what it always is, bread but soft. Where I begin to lose attraction to Blue Gate was the fake mashed potatoes. I would bet they are not real, I get it the volume they serve real potatoes likely are not fiscally responsible. The gravy I am certain is canned and the stuffing was good but I am also certain not home made. The ice tea was great, I didn't even need sugar! The pies. The bakery is relatively small in comparison with Das Essence Haus (spelling). I had the chocolate cream pie, which was gone by the time I got back into Michigan from IN. I was a bit disappointed the chocolate crinkles were not being produced on this day. I am not sure if this is a permenant change or a seasonal change. I saw the whoopie pies with moisture in the container on the shelves, maybe let them cool a bit longer. I get it want to sell. The pie refriderator was not very stockeed and I knew to ask for specific pies but some people may not know that. I will say another reason for lower stars was the absolute displeasurable older women (Saturday 11/15/25 approx 1430) who was working as a cashier for the menu side. I am not sure why she was so absolutely unpleasent but I hope management sees this discusses her awful attitude. All in all I belive the days of home made authentic amish food may be gone. It was my first time here and probably 15 years since my mom was here. The restaurant was beautifully decorated for fall and gave me Stars Hollow vibes. We got in just before the lunch rush. You can choose the lunch buffet located downstairs or to order off their menu which was on the main floor. We went with ordering off the menu. I got the pulled ham special. Everything about it was delicious, the ham, mashed potatoes and cinnamon apples so good. My mom got the chicken salad plate which is definitely a good bang for your buck. After lunch we stopped in the bakery and picked up several tasty items: Amish peanut butter, cinnamon roll, apple bread, fudge, cashew crunch and pumpkin donut. I love the Blue Gate Theater and I finally tried the buffet-ticket combo. While the theater never disappoints the buffet was a letdown. The meats and desserts were good, especially the cobbler. The side dishes however had no seasoning. We were also made to stand and wait in a long line and as someone who has chronic pain I really could have used a seat. Tried the banana cream pie but I wasn't a fan. Recommend getting the lemon cookies, and chocolate candy bags (I think it was $12/lb?) Parking is a breeze. Just across from the Craft Barn. Located In the heart of Shipshewana, this adorable restaurant and music hall has very friendly staff and is quite popular. Prices were reasonable, includes unlimited beverages, soup, salad, entree items and dessert. Compared to the other location visited, was disappointed with the options of the buffet, not much of a variety as compared to the other and could have been better seasoned and a bit more flavorful, in comparison. This time, I decided to go to the dining room rather than the buffet because that was the only thing I wanted. First, the service was excellent. The servers were very friendly. I liked that they gave me a whole loaf of bread & let me take home what was left over. It was nice that they have both apple butter and peanut butter on the table for the bread. I ordered the chicken & noodles as planned, although I was almost swayed by fried chicken. But I decided that I should get what I came for -- especially since I can get fried chicken anywhere. I got a garden salad for my side. It was good, but very small. And I was kind of befuddled by the fact that they find that mashed potatoes and gravy is the appropriate accompaniment to chicken and noodles. There really wasn't much chicken in it; what was there was tiny diced pieces. And it was VERY salty; I almost couldn't eat it. The mashed potatoes were pretty good, though. I don't usually like gravy on them, but this gravy was pretty good. I did bring the leftovers home, as I didn't eat much at the time. I cut up some turkey and put that in with the noodles (along with some fresh parsley), so I hope that that will soak up and redisperse some of the salt. I was really excited to try an Amish buffet as I've never been to Amish country before. We put our names down on the list and only had a short wait for a table despite the bustling venue. It seems like this is really a hotspot for entertainment in the area. The food was just okay though. Nothing special. The fried chicken and mashed potatoes were the best items. The pies were good but they were not labeled, which made selecting them an interesting gamble. I would have preferred a banana pie but I ended up with a slice of coconut and chocolate. It has been over nine years since my review of Blue Gate Restaurant & Bakery, an Amish-themed restaurant/bakery/theater complex located in the small LaGrange County town of Shipshewana. The establishment is owned by the Riegsecker family along with Blue Gate Theater, Blue Gate Garden Inn, Shipshewana Furniture Company, and Riegsecker Cabinet Company. The entire complex is known as Riegsecker Marketplace and all the businesses fall under the Blue Gate Hospitality Company umbrella. I said it previously and it's still true. There are times that Blue Gate reminds me of a cross between the somewhat nearby Das Essenhaus (same county, different city) and a Cracker Barrel. There's a bit of a kitschy feeling here that is so earnest it makes me smile. The most popular option for dining tends to be the family style buffet. For the most part, Blue Gate emphasizes traditional Amish/family fare. However, you can also get more mainstream fare. It's all quite delicious and for the most part prepared with local ingredients. Blue Gate has a variety of dietary options including sugar free, gluten free, MSG free, vegetarian, wheat free, and dairy free. They have an awesome dessert menu, a kid's menu, and much more. The prices for a buffet range are surprisingly affordable with a bit of an elevation on Fridays and Saturdays. I didn't see any indication of a regular show like was there at my first review (Josiah for President was awesome), though it is worth noting that the Blue Gate Theatre has grown massively and now hosts a lot of national acts mostly in the country and/or faith-based areas. The bakery is also in the restaurant. They can handle events/groups (this place is huge) and carry-out is also available. The fried chicken continues to be great along with the pot roast. This time around, I tried meatloaf. It was amazing. The desserts are phenomenal including my always desired chocolate pie. Oh yeah, they have a lot of vegetables. Not that I care. There's still a lot of hyper-organization here. And, of course, there are aspects of operation that will be surprising for an Amish-themed restaurant. That said, it's a nice weaving together of traditional with contemporary touches. As has always been true for me here, I appreciated all the employees. They're friendly, helpful, and seem to have a good instinct for helping. As a wheelchair user, I had no real issues getting around even when it was crowded. The current owners bought this restaurant in the 1980's when it was known as Der Strudel Haus. If you go to Shipshewana, stopping at Blue Gate is kind of a no-brainer. It's hard to imagine you won't end up at one of the Riegsecker's businesses here and they're all really a delight. read more

I tried this restaurant for the first time today. I was very disappointed! I had heard the Blue Gate was very good. I had gotten the buffet and didn't eat half the food that looked good. The mashed potatoes had no tastes, the roast beef was dry, the green beans were bland and needed cooked longer, the lettuce from the salad bar looked old. The buffet here was a bit underwhelming for me. I was hoping for a buffet of home-style foods, but it felt more like a better version of Old Country Buffet than Amish Paradise. For the price, I would have expected higher quality. The bright spot of the buffet is definitely the deserts. The desert selection is the same size area as the main food. I went on Monday, 9/8/25, well after lunch time. The restaurant was not the least bit busy, and it appeared that each server only had a couple of tables. I was seated by the hostess and then waited 15 minutes before my server even came to my table to take my drink order. I ordered my meal at the same time. I got their famous fried chicken, all white meat, with mac and cheese and corn as my sides. The food did come quickly, but at best, it was lukewarm. Even the chicken, which should have been steaming hot, was barely warm. The outer crust which should have been really crispy, was oily and soggy. Did they just go pick it off the buffet table? I cannot recommend Blue Gate to anyone. It certainly wasn't worth $20 . I didn't get the buffet because I wanted to be able to take my leftovers home. read more

This review is specifically for the breakfast buffet. Our server was excellent - zero complaints. She was on top of refills and didn't interrupt unnecessarily. We arrived in a large party and they had no issues seating us promptly. This time they sat us downstairs in what appeared to be an auxiliary room. The buffet included pre-scrambled eggs that smelled of sulfur and tasted like a cost saving mixture of powdered fake eggs and a couple rotten real eggs tossed in for 'texture.' The sausage was boiled. The ham was soaking in a water bath as well. Donuts were out along with muffins that looked store bought and tiny, some bread and a toaster, cream cheese and Amish peanut butter, and the watermelon "salad" with bananas and Maraschino cherries frozen all together and dumped into a plastic container. It's sad when bacon is the highlight of your meal. The literal cherry on top was when my father in law asked for a toothpick and was informed that it would be an additional charge. We have been here many times in the past. My husband was born and raised in the area and never once had a complaint about the restaurant. They seem to be sacrificing quality for a money grab. After spending the morning at the flea market, it was a short walk to Blue Gate. They had a 30 minute for the dinner room or immediate seating for the buffet. We chose to wait for the restaurant. They took our cell phone number and would text, we would spend our time visiting more Amish shops. While walking about there were many horse powered carriages and bicycles, tricycles and e-bikes used either by the Amish of Mennonites. I got our test, returned to the restaurant and were quickly seated. The menu had an extensive selection, I chose the chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables and a freshly baked loaf of bread. My wife ordered an Amish sampler that included mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, salad along with meatloaf, pot roast shredded beef and chicken. Both meals were excellent. This place offers a dining service upstairs and a buffet downstairs. We did the buffet downstairs and it was pretty large. They had a full salad buffet, a full hot plate buffet with several options of meat and sides, and a full dessert buffet. The buffet had some good options and some not so good options... but that's buffets for ya! It was fun to sample some new things (like meatloaf shepherds pie) and have some things I haven't eaten in a while (like butterscotch pudding). read more
