Our Family Has Stayed Here 10 Times and We Love IT Our larger family has had our annual family vacation at the Blue Door Cottages since 2009. We normally book 6 - 8 cottages. This year was the best ever! The Blue Door Cottages are now owned and operated locally. The rooms are very clean and constantly being updated. The grounds are beautifully maintained. The manager Brent is be commended. He really goes out of his way to make all guests feel very welcome. He even drove out of his way to a local restaurant where we were having breakfast to say good bye to our familyl after our 3 night stay. Our whole family really loves the Blue Door Cottages and will be back in the summer of 2019. We would highly recommend a stay here if you happen to be in the area. read more

8/13/17 I have been staying at Blue Door for 9 years. This past visit has changed my mind to ever going back. The cottage was filthy dirty. The floor was not clean, and it looked like the place had not been cleaned in weeks. I prayed that the sheets were clean! Cottage #13 - important to note that we stayed strictly in cottage #13, I do not know what the other cottages are like. Location Gravel drive way. Must cross busy street to access water for fishing or if you dock your own boat. Water/Dock access is broken down - bad. Realllllly bad. Cut wires, stairs falling apart, etc. No restaurant or bars in walking distance. 3 miles from lake but not from lake access. Lake access is about a 10 minute drive. The pool is nice on property and a great height for kids. They allow floats and stuff in the pool too. The Cottage Cleanliness - It was dusty. I mean REALLLLLLLY dusty. The comforter isn't changed or washed each time between guests so heads up. I know this because after we checked out, I had to access the cottage and the comforter was the same one - the exact same one with the same stain. Pull out couch - We pulled the couch out that evening for my 9 year old to sleep on and there were wires and metal pieces sticking out.... with about 50 black zip ties holding the entire thing together. If we had one more person in the cabin, we would not have had enough room for everyone to sleep. Refrigerator - Did not cool our food. Let the gentleman know and he blamed us for having too much hot food in the fridge. After I explained that everything we put in there just came from a cooler except for (2) 12 packs of pop, he blamed the pop. He pulled the fridge from being right up against the wall, explaining that that may have something to do with it.... never got cold. Had to keep our cold items in coolers for the entire stay. Freezer worked though.... Pots and Pans - One pan. One pot. Meaning, when we cooked breakfast or dinner, we had to cook bacon... then wash the pan... then cook eggs... then wash the pan.... the cook hash browns. There was a note on the fridge telling us the extra pots, pans, toilet paper, etc were in the laundry room however, there was NOTHING in the laundry room except for laundry items, a plunger, and some pool toys. DVD player/Televisions - in the early evening, we were visited by the same gentleman that works there/owners, asking to put our DVD player in another cottage because theirs didn't work. Yikes. The TV in the living room area is a roku, which was nice to be able to live stream.... but the internet connection is horrible so we rented a movie through our amazon account and weren't able to watch it. Netflix works though so that was nice. The TV in the master bedroom had buttons missing on the actual television. Miscellaneous - No where to hang wet towels and bathing suites outside. Grill is disgusting - bring your own. Website says fire pits but #13 isn't anywhere near any of them on property. No daily cottage service. No extra towels for bathing. Shower is very modern so hot tip - to get the shower to work, you need to pull down under the faucet. Overall - its very worn down. Furniture is falling apart. Service wasn't welcoming and seemed stocked with excuses. The gentleman seemed annoyed by me when I would come to the office. I did take a look at the other cottages in the area and they all seem a little worn so I think if we come back, we are going to try to rent a house through Airbnb or Vrbo. read more

Stayed in the Big Cabana and it was filthy dirty. Floors hadn't been washed in weeks, unit not dusted in months, couch is disgusting, there is a swimsuit hygiene label stuck to the floor, found a dead moth on my pillow and there were a few bugs we killed (not sure what they were and don't want to know). Fire pits were nice and the pool decently maintained, although small. Booked based off great reviews on another travel site and was completely disappointed. read more

We have been visiting the Blue Door for many years now as the destination for our family's annual reunion trip. This review reflects my experience from our most recent visit (July 2016). Pros: -Affordable prices -Several fire pits with firewood for sale -Charcoal grills available for guest use -Charming cottage aesthetic -Quiet Cons: -Manager was very rude and unpleasant when approached with a problem or concern -Lots of strictly enforced rules -Visible black mold in our unit's window A/C -Not located on the water; must cross busy road -Furniture is VERY worn/tired & needs updating -Not accessible (rough gravel and steep entry) -Pool is very small & quickly becomes too crowded We do not plan to return next year. With almost 30 family members gathering, we collectively spend a very substantial amount of money to be together. We will be finding a different location in Monticello to spend our money, which will certainly provide more pleasant service. read more

The Blue Door Cottages are great! They are extremely affordable and high class!! It's nice to have a restaurant and bar on site as well. This is definitely a little hidden gem. The owner is incredibly nice and takes pride in what he does. We will be going back, but we need to book early they fill up!! I would give it 5 stars.... but they need to get more movable firepits. If you dont get there early, your neighbors claim them. Youre either left to leave your cottage to find one or enjoy the company of your neighbor. read more

This is my second time staying at Blue Door Cottages! Once for 3 days in June 2015 and again in July 2016 for 7 days! I can't say enough about this place! It's just awesome, nice and clean place! The Mgr Scott is awesome and is easy going guy! The cottages are clean and very well up kept! The grounds are very well kept clean and easy to find everything you need! Nice pool and you can pretty much swim whenever you want as long as you respect other guest and the resort rules! They also do have a pontoon boat you can rent and it's super nice as well from what I have seen of it. I haven't rented it yet but will def be rented next summer! Blue Door cottages is a nice little place ... but don't expect to stay in your room for any length of time. There is about enough room to turn around and that's it. We had 5 people in one room and it was tight. Kids got a little restless. We had a problem with our room being by a nasty dumpster but the owner was responsive; the dumpster was emptied the next day and moved to a different location on the property. The rooms were clean and well cared for. Pros: Convenient, perfect if you have a boat (free boat slip) and the restaurant right across the street is nice. Convenience store about a block's distance away for those last minute items. Bring your own firewood. Price. Cons: Really small rooms and small pool (but very clean pool area). Grills are small as well. Free Wi-Fi did not work at all. One burner on the stove did not work. DVD player on TV skipped and froze. Fridge was not working well either. Only one sleeping area with a door, little privacy. Might stay there again, not sure at this point. read more

Very Disappointed. Angry for the price we paid and what we got. Manager Brent was very nice ......but...........Came for a family vacation for a 4 day weekend, but could only handle 2 days. So we packed up and left. Not at all what the website claims. Pictures are deceiving. Pool is basically a big hot tub. Lake access is a joke and under a shut down construction job. Grounds are run down and a mess. Cabins were at least cleanish. Basic utensils were ok, but only 1 pan and no serving bowls or Tupperware or platters. , There was a shower in the bathroom that didn't function(so we had one shower for the seven of us). Our cabin on the outside wasn't kept up. .....leaves, dirt, crap everywhere. Not at all worth what we paid for.....seriously 300.00 a night!!!!! That price to me is a 4 or 5 star stay.......Blue Door is a 1 at best and to charge that price is just wrong!!! Ps.....the best restaurant on the lake which is directly across from this place(which was a big draw on choosing this place) is either out of business or shut down. read more

The cottages were clean, bug free, & super cute. Thre grounds were well maintained, contained communal fire pits & picnic tables, & also had a very well maintained pool area & wooden swingset. The manager was very friendly & helpful, had plenty of suggestions, and stocked dvd's & games in the lobby to lend out. The property was about 4 minutes to indiana beach and places to eat, but it is a great drive. There is a drive in theater about 5 mins away too, it is great for kids!! Im so glad I chose these cottages, I will be back again & again. read more

We stayed at Blue Door Cottages this summer and will definitely return next year! The website was great in helping us pick out a cabin that fit our family. The cottages are cute, clean and well appointed- providing all of the things we needed for our stay. We loved the interiors and the convenient location, not to mention the beautiful trees which surround the cottages. The pool is great! We have two children and they LOVED playing in the pool for hours. The grounds are well-kept and the fire pits are perfect for making s'mores. Thank you Blue Door for such a great stay! THE rooms are clean. That's it! The manager makes sure you shower if you use the pool... But you can't get new towels unless you stay here 4 nights. They want you to pay to wash your own. The pool is only 3 foot and very small. They act like its a 5 star resort. If you are a boater then don't bother. The lake is 2-3 feet in most areas and it's across the street and down 3 stories. They also say plenty of room for your trailer but there really is not!!!! I would not stay here ever again. read more

2012 - We wanted to spend a few days relaxing with the kids before they went back to school this summer. After searching online for places to stay near Indiana Beech, we decided on the Blue Door Cottages. The cabins themselves were very nice, they were exactly like the website shows. The cottages were very clean and freshly painted. They supply you with just about everything you could want. The one person staff on the other hand could have been a bit friendlier. Every time we talked to the caretaker, who lives on the property, he was grumpy and standoffish. I know its outdoors and that bugs are part of nature, but they should try to find a way to help with the nuisance they cause. There were wasp/hornets all over the place and after we mentioned it to him he replies "your outside, what do you expect". All in all it was a decent experience and we enjoyed ourselves. Great cottages, pool, location, and price. A friendlier staff would have made it a great experience. read more

This is a great place to stay if you want to visit indiana beach but don't want to hear the constant noise from the park. It is clean, simple, fun. The cottages are in a horse shoe around the playground and pool so it is easy to see what the kids are up to, and the cottages were pretty clean. My family and I stayed here this past weekend (Thurs-Sun)...the trip was planned so we could go to Indiana Beach Theme Park Saturday. I would highly recommend this place for SLEEPING only and cooking (to avoid high food prices at the amusement park). If you have kids, do not expect this to be a fun hang out place. Next year, I'm thinking maybe driving up to Indy Beach early in the morning, staying at the amusement park all day and just sleeping at BDC. See pros and cons below: PROS: -VERY affordable. I rented a bungalow (king size, queen size, twin? sleeper sofa), kitchen (fridge, microwave, stove), TV, A/C, grill, patio--all of this for about $430.00 Thurs check in at 3PM, checked out at 11 on Sunday. -Very quiet and peaceful area. Coming from a noisy city, the quietness was VERY nice, however, a little unnerving at times because we are not used to it. -Friendly owners..Scott and I believe her name was Laurie were extremely helpful and nice. -Unit is very modern, however, I can't speak for all the units. I believe Scott mentioned one of the units still has a tube TV. That is fine for me, but I know a lot of people aren't into those anymore. -You are ten minutes from Indiana Beach!! -Very nice people that were staying in the cottages neighboring us! CONS: There are quite a few cons, however, with the price you pay and what you get for your buck, if you are just staying here a night or two, this place cannot be beat! -Water is horrid! Bring along a gallon of drinking water. The water tastes like feces in the washroom. Well water? -Although the cottage is more spacious than a hotel room, it is pretty tiny. My group was two adults and two children (3 and 8). To sleep, everyone was comfortable, but during the day, I felt that we were on top of each other. It didn't help that the weather was so crappy though. -Due to the weather, we didn't swim, however, the pool is pretty small. Like someone said, the whole thing is 3 feet. -The playground is pretty tiny as well. -Like someone said above, there is no way you are getting access to the lake across the road. Yes, you can look at the water, but there is a HUGE STEEP drop to go down there. Definitely not accessible. -When we were there, the bar/restaurant was closed for renovations I believe. -Comcast wasn't working (no service) -Area is pretty boring. If you are just going for a day or just using your cottage for sleeping and eating...this is the place. Even if it is just you or you and another adult just relaxing in the middle of nowhere...this place may be OK to JUST hang out at. If you have children with you, nuh-uh. -Convenience store down the street may have good chicken, but otherwise it is pricey (almost $4 for a 2Liter of Coke). -This is not cottage related, but this area has THE WORST cell phone service I've ever experienced. It was damn near impossible to get directions anywhere. In a nutshell, would I go back? Yes! Would I recommend this place to people? Yes! I would just make my stay shorter :) read more

This is literally the worst place I have ever stayed at before. I would rate this as a zero if possible. The owners were terrible, they charge you fees for the most petty stuff (my friends had pretzels outside by their front door ... that constitutes a fee!?), they talked negatively about their "cleaning lady" the moment I checked in (red flag!), they make up rules as they go (butting into our conversation about wanting to do water balloons, banning us from doing so? ... unprofessional, creepy and rude!), their pontoon boat was broken and the dock was completely broken down and unsafe and the place was dirty - I had no towels in my room and there were bugs everywhere!!! read more

Cute little place. Our cabin was pretty much exactly as the pictures on the web site. Could have used a couple more shelf's and hooks in the kitchen and bathroom. When they say utensils are a bare minimum they mean it. Brought plastic utensils and basic grilling things along but thought it would have at least ONE decent knife for food prep. Nope bring your own. Fairly clean after all it is a cabin with a pretty big turn around so you can't expect it to be as clean as your house but it fairly clean. TV is very small, although your not watching a lot of tv it would be nice if it was at least a 27" for when the kids are watching at night. Would have also liked an outdoor table but only the bigger cabins have them. The restaurant across the street was closed for construction which wasn't mentioned on the web. Due to open in a couple weeks. Pool seemed smaller to me than what is shown in the pics. Could have used a just a little bit of lighting at night as we couldn't find the light switch to turn on the porch light so it's quite dark. I debated between a 3-4 rating. Went with 4 since I really didn't have any major issues. read more

This was our second year hosting my husbands family reunion at this location. Upon arriving last year, the owner seemed a bit bothered that we were a little early at check in....ok, understandable. After checking in, we went to our cottage. Looks very similar to the pics on their website, however, doesn't look like they've mopped in a very long time. For the most part, very accommodating. Bathrooms do not have a bath mat so in order to risk a slip and fall we put a towel on the floor. Upon checking out, we were told our "bathmat/ towel" was too dirty so we would be charged for one towel. During our stay, the owner always walked around with a grumpy attitude. We figured he was having a bad day but his mood never changed. Given the benefit of the doubt, we decided to give him a second shot and book this years reunion. The owners attitude hasn't changed one bit. He is a complete GRUMP!!! He claims a neighbor complained about our music which is odd since the neighbors were actually enjoying the music with us. He yelled at the kids In the pool for playing with certain floaties that were there for everyone's use. He told them, "go play with the other s***!" I can go I and on but you can be the judge if you decide to visit. My last comment I would warn you that besides maybe changing the bed sheets and putting clean towels I firmly believe they don't clean much. The shower floor looks like it's never been cleaned along with the floors ever being mopped. The let out couch is very dirty as well. If it was for "Mr Grumpy" I would give them at least 4 stars along with doing a better job cleaning. read more

We stayed here this fall with our family and some friends. It was exactly what we wanted with a huge open area to gather, play set for the littles and grass for older kiddos to play football. Two fire pits were great for the group we had and the accommodations were clean and warming. I can't wait to come back in the summer for the lake and pool. Our family reunion was spent at these cottages this past weekend. I looked on line for pricing, looks, accessibility to lake, stores, restaurants, etc. After looking at the cottages on line, they looked so nice, clean, and comfortable, but seeing them in person was so different. The cottages are small, old, run down, with old furniture, and appliances. it does not sleep 6 due to too small but we managed. The sofa bed mattress was filthy and had an odor to it. I had been speaking to Scott, the manager by phone for months and this was the first time I met him in person. Scott proceeded to tell me the rules of the property, including that they have a curfew of 11pm. I told Scott this was a family reunion and it may be loud and he should have told me this before when I spoke to him by phone for months.. plus other cottages we stayed before never h ad a curfew. I felt like we were kids and time to go to bed... Scott said their should not be a problem as long as others don't complain., in which we rented half of the cottages. Scott was very nice to me, but as the rest of my family arrived That Friday, I received complaints from them on how rude he was to them on answering simple questions.. I spoke with Scott again, and he said he was frustrated due to having to fire 2 cleaners and trying to get the rest of cottages ready for my family before check in at 3pm, and he did not mean to be mad at anyone. As the weekend went on, I, and others in my family noticed Scott kept coming around the property before/and after his working hours of 10am to 4pm as he quoted me.. We all felt like we were being watched which made us think he is prejudice.. I had a meeting with the family and told them not to say anything else to Scott but to let me know if they needed anything and I would speak with him. We managed to get threw the weekend with leaking windows, lights and ac going out, dusty surfaces, etc. I did get a call from Scott after I arrived home on Sunday thanking me and my family for leaving the cottages clean and putting all the chairs picnic tables back where they belong. I told Scott we always clean up after ourselves no matter where we stay. Scott said he just wanted to thank us and hope to see us again next year. I said ok and bye..
