I can't say enough about this salon. It is my go to for my curly hair. I had Diandra (sorry for spelling) cut my hair. She was kind and courteous. I called on a Tuesday and got in the next day. I took about 2/3 inch of hair off and was feeling a little nervous as you see in the pic I went from long curls to a shorter bob with bangs. For $95 I had my hair washed, cut and styled. It took about an hour and my stylist worked with me to make sure I liked what was happening. I am very pleased and will continue to return when I'm ready for something new! I went to Blown for the first time to get my haircut. The stylist was very thoughtful and ask exactly how I wanted to trim my hair. She gave me long layers and cut 1 inch off my hair, which was a trim and not a significant change to my hair style. I chose not to have my hair blow dried or styled. I was SHOCKED to receive a bill for $95! I've never been charged $95 for just a haircut (trim really) without even a blow dry! The salon environment isn't anything special either. Want to feel and look like a million bucks? Blown Salon works miracles!! I have been wanting to get my hair cut for the longest time and since I was new to the area, I was not sure of which hair salon to go to. I went onto Groupon and came across Blown Salon which was offering a package deal for Full Highlights, Women's Cut, Blow Out and Style, for a really reasonable price and immediately bought it without hesitating. After purchasing the deal, I went on to make an appointment with the salon for the next day!! I was paired with Oscar and Oscar is the sweetest, most caring and amazing hairstylist I have ever had!! Oscar, if you're reading this; You're the best!!! I wanted blonde highlights at first but Oscar was really against it, as he said that my hair was fine hair and if he were to do blonde highlights, my hair would break. I then showed him a picture on my phone of what I wanted, and he said that he could do a similar color to the picture in Ombre style, but not exactly to the picture because my hair would break and be damaged after 2 days. Ombre style was not part of the package deal on Groupon and it cost only $50 more, so I was like, "Why not just give it a try?" He then proceeded to work his magic and he was giving me hair advice along the way. During the entire process, he made sure I was well taken care of. I felt so comfortable with Oscar and that hardly happens, when I go to other hair salons. When he was about to be done with my hair, he turned my chair away from the mirror, when he was cutting and blow drying my hair, so that it would be a surprise. When he finally revealed my hair to me, I was in total shock. I couldn't believe that the person staring right at me in the mirror, was actually me. I looked like a completely different person and my hair was so gorgeous. He gave me that extra boost in confidence, because he made me look so beautiful. Somehow, a higher end salon in Old Town managed to destroy my long hair. I went in on a Groupon deal (yes, Groupon -- I was looking for a new salon close to home, this one seemed legit from the reviews). I was set up with Diondra and asked for a simple long-hair cut with layers (my hair was about mid-back length with V shape and layers). I wanted 2-3" off the ends with some layers for balance. What I received was a 6" haircut with no layers. If I wanted a line across my back with no layers, I would have asked my roommate to take the kitchen shears to my hair and make a straight line; not paid $60 for someone to do the same thing at a salon. In a futile attempt to fix the straight-line hair cut, I called Blown and told them I wanted more layers added. They nicely enough allowed me to come back in on the same day so they could fix the haircut and add some style and balance to my haircut. The stylist was able to add some layers to give it somewhat more of a balanced look. However, the the layers were done pretty badly; one side of my face has framing layers 1" shorter than the other side. Its so noticeable my roommate asked where on earth I got my hair cut so she wouldn't make the same mistake I did. I aptly insulted her short hair and said why would you go anywhere but Supercuts, but alas, that's not the point of this review. One final note, when Diondra added the final layering to my hair, I noticed the other stylist Oscar wince when he looked over at my hair being done while he was blowing-out his clients hair. Never a good sign to see another stylist disrespect someone's work... especially when that work is your own hair. I'm never one to leave bad reviews that aren't warranted, especially when those reviews are aimed directly at one individual and not at an entire establishment. Maybe this place is OK if you have the right stylist, or a more simple haircut than a long-layered look. Either way, based solely on my one experience, this place does not deserve the 4.5 star review it has on Yelp. read more

I have super curly hair that was straightened and the humidity killed. She flat ironed and curled it (while under pressure bc she knew how late I was). I was in and out in 30, hair looked flawless, and she never once made me feel like she was rushing or that I was an inconvenience. Also tezie at the front desk was so friendly and accommodating. Today is my 4th visit and they really went above and beyond as a team. I called last minute this morning, hoping for a cut and color, but could only book a cut by that time. I got my hair cut here almost as joke. I have lived or worked in Old Town for seven years now and learned one painful sometimes brutal lesson: Old town is not cool, hip, trendy, or youthful. If Old Town was a rock star, it would be Dave Mathews. Even when measured by DC's already infamously low hipness-bar, it doesn't measure up. So coming to Old Town for an interesting hair cut would seem about as logical as going to Montana for sushi. Anyway... ...the signs outside of Blown caught my attention on more than one occasion. I finally had to come in and check it out when they advertised something about "edgy" hair cuts. I signed up, with the total expectation that I was going to pay too much for an office drone hair cut issued by some hot girl with tattoos. Being that I was a walk-in, they weren't able to serve me right away. I was asked to come back in 45. They were super friendly and seemed fun, so I didn't mind. I went for a walk and texted the girlfriend that I'd be home late. CUE STORM OF HAIR PICS FROM GIRLFRIEND. The pics flood in. Apparently she wanted me to look like "a cross between a 1930s british lord and a male milanese runway model, present day." 45 minutes later, armed with this line and a few examples, Mason went to work on my hair. He was quite friendly and excited when I let him know that he could actually follow the instructions issued. A short while later I ended up with a cut that I could wear to work or dash up. Completely asymmetrical, long in parts, short elsewhere, even an off-center taper in the back. It was the kind of haircut that I'd describe as "cool, but can be toned down for work" rather than "plain, but you can add texture with molding paste for date night." It was a surprise win. ...and way less expensive than I was used to paying. I'll be coming back to Blown for as long as they're around. If you're a guy who wants an interesting hair cut, Mason's definitely the man to look for. read more

In case, perchance, you hadn't noticed yet, my hair is currently purple. And pink. And a little bit of blue. And this magical weaving of colors that make me feel like the prettiest pony of them all is all thanks to Sarah at Blown Salon. Now, those of you who know me (or even who have simply seen some pictures of me) know that coloring my hair is nothing new. My hair changes almost as often as my mood, everything from black to red to highlights to blonde (I really did have more fun) to a huge chunk of pink in my bangs (and I did that last one at home). But when I made the decision to go all out and do multiple colors, I decided to spare my clothing, towels, skin, and bathroom from the inevitable mess that would ensue and go to the professionals. I've actually been seeing Sarah for several years now -- the first time in my life I can actually say I have a real hairdresser. I found her at Bubbles in Tyson's Corner eons ago, and followed her all the way to Old Town, where she crafts her coiffeur wizardry at Blown. She's helped me go blonde, she's helped me go back, and she's given me many a haircuts in between, so I knew she'd be up to the task of purple-fying my 'do. Plus, she's no stranger to having streaks of pink and purple in her own hair! She and I obviously have a very good rapport, but I would honestly recommend her to pretty much anyone since she's so friendly and warm, and she does a great job. The process was a two-stepper for me, since my natural color is very dark. My ends were bleached all to hell, and then I got pink'd, purple'd, and just a teensy bit o' blue was added too. The end result? Why, I love it, of course! I get tons of compliments, the color is vibrant and incredibly fun. Absolutely worth the 4 hours it took to get there, hahaha. So now for some of the things that will be a little bit more useful to those of you who aren't going for the electric unicorn look. The whole salon has a very homey, arty feel, and the owner, Mason, is very cool. It's a fairly small operation -- there are 4 hairdressing chairs, I believe, but that just means you feel a lot more attended to -- plus, it's more intimate, which I like (except when there are a lot of people with appts at the same time, at which point, granted, it does start to feel a bit crowded.) The salon is located right on King St in Old Town Alexandria -- it's right upstairs next to Bellacara, in case you ever miss it while driving down. As with everything in Old Town, parking is a righteous pain in the butt, but there's a small pay-to-park lot down the street from Blown. Unfortunately, as with the street parking as well, there's a 2-hour time limit on parking, which means if you're in it for the long haul, as I was, you're going to need to refresh your paystub or risk getting a parking ticket. (Guess which one I did? Hahahaha.) I definitely recommend Sarah at Blown if you're looking to do something fun, funky, or experimental with your hair, and even if you're not! One thing to bear in mind is that this is not Bubbles, it's a boutique hair salon, so the prices are going to be a little heftier. It's no PR @ Partners or anything like that, though, so as long as you're not used to paying for your $16 Hair Cuttery cuts, you'll probably be able to stomach the price. ;) read more

I was feeling impulsive regarding my hair yesterday and called Blown Salon only to find out that they were booked for the rest of the day. No more than 2 minutes later, Dominique calls me back and tells me that she'll squeeze me in and that she didn't mind staying late in order to cut my hair. I'd never been to this salon but that kind of customer service is more than enough to earn my loyalty! The staff is fantastic and while they keep you entertained, they are highly professional and very good at what they do. Dominique took the time to discuss my hair and provide suggestions. She talked me out of cutting most of my hair off and to excellent results. I've had so many compliments on my hair cut already! Seeing that they were as busy as they were for a Tuesday evening an hour before closing, appointments are recommended. Awesome part: bangs trims are free, all you have to do is call the day you plan on coming in to get them trimmed. Awesome part 2: since I was a new customer, I was given 10% off. I've continued to follow Dominique from Old Town to Maryland to Del Ray and back to Old Town. And yes, I still live in Honolulu, 11 hours and two-overpriced-airline-snackboxes away. She is still 5-star, working with me through all my hair moods and still remembering the locations of my multitude of cowlicks. She will also make sure to cut my hair in a way that it will grow out well, important since I only get back to DC once a quarter. These days, I'm terrified of getting a hair cut that will age me (entirely too easy with short hair), which keeps me coming back to Dominique instead of finding a salon in Honolulu (though I went out on a limb and got color done here with great success!). The salon itself is in one of those weird old Alexandria buildings that probably used to be a house with an odd layout so you walk around a lot from room to room for reception, washing and the actual cut. Aside from that, the heating system seemed to be very effective, which may not seem important to you, but is incredibly important to me when I'm visiting in winter... read more

Came in with a Groupon for moisture treatment + haircut. 1 star for haircut, 3 stars for moisture treatment. My hair definitely needed the moisture treatment and felt a lot smoother after, but the downside was that my scalp and roots felt uncomfortably greasy. In addition, my neck ached after the stylist (Suzy) and her assistant were pulling hard on my hair while they applied the treatment. I asked for long layers for the cut - usually an easy haircut, I brought pictures and I wanted essentially my existing cut but a few inches shorter. Things started to go wrong quickly once she started on the front. Instead of blended, sleek layers, she cut uneven chunks in the front. Once I noticed, I asked her to fix it and reminded her what I wanted. It kept getting shorter and shorter, so I asked her to stop. She called over another stylist to help, but that didn't help. I finally just asked them to clean up the back, and I left. I wanted long, sleek layers (which I have received at all different kinds of salons)... and walked out with uneven hair that is reminiscent of an emo-girl mullet. My hair looks like I tried to cut it myself, and I'm embarrassed to wear it down. The worst part is that the front parts are so short that I have to wait a couple months before going somewhere to get them to fix the shape to what I want. I don't get my hair cut often. My hair is a mess. I was never really taught how to manage it, nor how to style it. I've essentially been left to my own devices. I'm also from a humble background, and my income isn't that great. After reading the reviews, Blown gave me the impression that they can do edgy (and yes, this salon is edgy), but they are also cool with simple, conservative styling. I have been to 4 other places in the DC Metro area. Some are nice, but are lacking on style. In my profession, I need to have some kind of style. Since my hair has multiple cow licks, is voluminous, and thick...well let's just say the poor victims who style my hair have their work cut out for them. So I called shortly after they opened and I was able to book an early afternoon appointment with Susy. The website says that they can do walk-ins, but it's better to call ahead, so that's what I did. Susy is nice and down-to-earth. She loves her work and she is quite knowledgeable. I came in there ready to be assertive about talking about how difficult my hair is, and profess my otherwise total lack of knowledge. Susy and I had a back and forth about what to do, what I liked, and what she could do for me. Shortly after she began her manager - who looks a little like Metallica's James Hetfield (circa 1990s) - came in to check on her. Susy was talking him - and me - through what she was working with (did I mention my hair is difficult?) and what she was doing. Manager approved and went back to what he was doing. I think I was out in 45 minutes between getting started, talking, getting shampooed, finishing and paying. It would have been much shorter, but it had been awhile since my last cut. So it's been 3 days since it was cut, and it is settling better than I've ever seen it before. I was recommended a product that I'm using and I'm seeing great results. I will mention that the chairs were comfortable - nothing really more to that. The music was not my style, but my taste is rather eclectic. I will happily return to Blown Salon again. read more

I came in wanting to try a new place with a Groupon for a cut and highlights. I must admit that lately I have not been 100% satisfied with what I have received so I keep trying. I definitely was due for a coloring because my roots were not looking like I could still possible be a blond when my hair was pulled back. I called the same day and I was given an appointment with Suzy. When I arrived (almost late because parking is on the street and v, I was taken aback by the appearance of the place. I read a review that said it was similar to a "college dorm or apartment" and they are correct. There is nothing fancy here except the shampoo chairs are actually comfortable. Suzy was kind and took her time analyzing my hair. I was shocked when she began to actually discuss my hair color and shared her thoughts about what we could do that would fit me better. What she told me was straight forward and true. She asked me a great deal of questions such as "How long could I go without colorings?" "What was my budget?" "Would I be willing to go darker to look more natural but stay blond? She showed me several color samples but I left it up to her because the final vision she had was difficult for me to see. She showed me from some magazines what her final viison was and I liked it but she won me over by reassuring me that she knows how to do blonds because she becomes a blond as she wishes but color correcting is her thing. I have never really believed in looking at pictures so I often just trust the hairdresser but after talking with Suzy I felt like she was right- my hair was "Barbie" and different colors throughout the lengths Suzy is not too chatty, which is great because I often do work when getting my hair done. However, when I was willing to talk, we had a great conversation. Anyway, my hair took a longer time than normal because she didn't do the highlights at the same time as the roots. Her explanation for why she did not do that made perfect sense. In the end, I really liked the results. She told me that this would be a process and for me to wait as long as I could before getting my next hair coloring with her. She did cut my hair but she did exactly as I asked so I cannot speak of her ability to cut more difficult hairstyles or different cuts. Personally, I feel like her strong point is coloring; however, I just asked for trim so perhaps I am wrong. Went to work the next day and had tons of compliments. My hair was definitely super shiny, less brassy, and the colors from top to bottom were starting to inter-blend. I did not have any more of the white blond streaks from over-coloring and I liked the low lights, which brought a subtle, more natural look. Overall, I will be coming back for Step 2 because Step 1 went very well and was on the reasonable side if I had not had a Groupon. read more

I told Mason that I wanted some dimensional color and was just thinking of some darker lowlights. He suggested a darker violet which was beautiful but I was a bit hesitant about. After flipping through the swatch book we settled on two dark browns and the violet brown. Mason was super personable and I shouldn't have hesitated at all because the colors were beautiful and look incredibly natural. Shelby then cut my hair exactly like I described it, "texturized, fun and flirty' without really taking off too much of the length. This is my new salon, without a shadow of a doubt. I was recommended to this salon by my pole dance instructor, and her hair is always bold, edgy, cool, and still classy. I made an appointment with Sarah and I couldn't be happier. I was early, so the receptionist and I ended up chatting and having a grand time. She brought me a glass of water and we talked about our dogs, laughing and talking the whole time. When Sarah came to get me she was friendly, listened to what I said, input her opinion and molded her ideas with mine. Throughout the entire cut she was extremely friendly and conversational, I felt like she and I had been friends forever and were about to go out and get drinks after this appointment, it was that relaxing. I hadn't had a cut in months due to personal things, but she managed to get rid of my dead ends while giving me some great shape and keeping the length that I'd been treasuring for months. I even made my next appointment, which I NEVER do. I'll be going in to get some great lowlights with Sarah in December. Long story short: this salon is great. 5 Stars for my Consultation with Susy (stylist) I have very curly hair and have been dying for ombre but I've been hesitant (there aren't too many convincing photo's of naturally curly ombre). I sat with Susy and we first talked about my cut. We went over how I usually style it and the overall shape I wanted from the cut. She nailed it and completely understood what I wanted and where I was coming from. Judging by what she was saying, she understands the craziness/sporadic-ness of curly hair which made me very comfortable talking with her about color... I initially wanted an all over ombre but she recommended a softer sombre because of my hesitation for something extreme (im very reserved when it comes to style - boring, i know!) We ended up coming to a happy medium that I feel much more comfortable with. I feel like she kept me grounded and helped me avoid a huge mistake. Next we spoke about the color. She was very knowledgeable about the process (ombre and the framing that should be done with it to make it softer, natural, and more flattering), which colors would suit me best as well as keep my hair healthy since bleach is extremely damaging (especially for us curlys) We wen't over swatches and variations of colors. I especially appreciated this because I was able to point out exactly what I wanted instead of describing a color that I have in my head. I took a picture of the colors we selected and now I plan to sleep on it to make sure i'm ready (did i mention i'm reserved). I set up the appointments for my cut and a separate for my color after my consult (the receptionist was very friendly and helpful with this process and my schedule) This was because she recommended I wear my new cut for at least two washes to make sure I like how it looks and settles in before going in and adding color - which i thought was brilliant and a very sound decision. I can't wait for this to be complete and Ill update with before and after pictures! p.s. susy was very pleasant the entire time and didn't make me feel wrong about my color choices or style, she simply offered her suggestions with reasons as to why it might work best. Not once did I feel pressured or feel belittled for knowing so little about hair and color. Lastly, she was honest! It was my first time here and I got a cut from Oscar. I told him I wanted a trim and that I like to wear my hair big and wavy. He is such a talented and amazing hair artist. I came into Blown Salon with their Living Social deal for a haircut and moisture treatment. I was told I did not need the moisture treatment because I was chopping off most of my hair. While I understand that, I do wish that something else had been offered in its place since it was something I had already paid for with the deal. That's the only reason my review isn't five stars. Anita took great care of me. She really understood what style would work best with my hair. The style I came in wanting was better suited for straight hair. My hair is wavy. She talked me through it and gave me a cut that matched what I was going for but would work well for when I want to wear my hair curly or straighten it. I highly recommend Blown Salon. If you want amazing blonde highlights, get yourself an appointment with Anita. She did my cut and highlights recently and the color turned out amazing. Naturally pretty, not thick and streaky, and she was super careful the entire time to ensure no color bleeding etc. Also she is just a very nice lady to chat with! I have a lot (ALOT) of long thick blonde hair and it takes a long time to put foils in, and I'm a bad client in that I get antsy in the salon chair after 45 minutes. This appointment did take a very long time, but that's really just due to how much hair I have, and it was absolutely worth the 3 hours in the salon to come out with perfect highlights and a cut. While she worked on my hair she was able to save the woman next to me from some bad highlights she has gotten at another salon, and fixed her hair color really well. Definitely recommend Anita! They also add a nice little touch with the keurig machine in the reception area, and offer you coffee in cute mugs while you wait. read more
