I was excited to see Blick was open for in-store shopping. I called ahead of my visit to find out if they had the items in stock and they did. So I was quite excited when I found a park right across the street. The layout was simple and quickly found the correct department. Some of the items were not on the shelf so I requested some help. That's when everything went down hill. As I waited for the employee to get the items from the stockroom, I encountered the locals. I know the neighborhood had changed but having rude school-aged kids and their parents invade my personal space as if the pandemic and I were non-existent was too much. Having a nasty father attempt to verbally attack me for moving back from their rude intrusions in a narrow space without so much as a word, completely disgusted me. By the reaction of the employees behind the counter, you know these kind of guys treat them the same way. I will go all the way to Manhattan to pick up items before I come back to deal with entitled jerks who have invaded the neighborhood. read more

I was excited when this art supply store reopened and have visited a few times in the past months. This store is pretty expansive and well organized with a plethora of different types of paints, canvas, pens, paper, and much more. My first visit I picked out specific colors I needed in acrylic paint: Iridescent White {not realizing this would be shimmery which was quite a cool effect} and Quinacrione Magenta {a lovely hot pink hue}. I selected the Blick Artists brand because it seemed to be the most economical and still ended up being on the expensive side. The white color was around $4 and the magenta shade was $8! I figured that it was worth it because it's my favorite color and difficult to create. I also bought the Aquarelle 18 color water color set, which was nicely priced around $15. The next time I went specifically to get canvas because I was joining a Yelp Elite Virtual Paint & Sip Night. I was going to buy the canvas separately and picked a few different sizes, but when I got to the register, I saw that canvas being sold in bulk for only $20! At first, I couldn't decide which size I wanted. Finally, I went for the 11x14 which contained 7 pieces of canvas. Another time, I picked out a set of Blick Studio acrylic paints {my favorite medium of paint}, which includes 48 different colors. I also got the regular shade in acrylic paint: Titanium White and a hot pink pen. In total, all these purchases were approximately $43. Each time, the cashiers were friendly and efficient. They asked me if I was a teacher and since I am, I received 10% off. Prices are generally reasonable, with a few exceptions depending on the brand. Overall, a great place to shop for art supplies with a decent variety. read more

We stumbled upon this art store after Sunday brunch and was amazed at their large selection. I went around and picked out several art items for my brother's high school graduation gift, since he is interested in fine arts and graphic design. The area was very clean and close to Pratt Institute (hence they even sold school apparel by the cash register). I ended up getting my brother a manga instruction book, a sketch pad notebook, fine point pens with different tip sizes/shapes, colored pencil set and two sarcastic but funny note pads. When I rung everything up at the cash register, the associate even gave me a discount for spending more than $50 (shown on a flyer/poster) and I was thankful for their kind and appealing service. This is a great place for any art student or anyone in general who has a fascination in art; they have a wide array of paints, brushes, portfolio bags, easels, every material you can think of for art projects and even feature desks designed for artists. read more

A great art store that can have great deals if you're lucky. I'm a professional artist working in the field for a living. I've been shopping there since it opened (as a Utrecht) and I am writing this because I want to commend the staff and management. Honestly some of the most helpful art store staff ever! Not to mention they employ many college students, and younger adults. They have a great selection of art materials, and a surprisingly good knowledge of said materials. I really hope Blick pays them deservedly, and by their willingness to help, I'd say they do. The staff always have a great attitude, which helps when I'm stuck trying to deal with clients, specific materials, having a bad day etc. Honestly bravo to all the staff! My only gripes are that if you miss a deal or the product is not their own you can get some items a little overpriced. Spray paint wise they often run out of the staples (black, white etc) They discontinued Spanish Montana (MTN) And just once a staff member kinda mocked me when I just missed a sale and laughed about it blatantly to my face. She was rather unfortunate looking so I'll take it as a grain of salt. But damn never laugh in a customers face when they just miss a half off deal. Two years ago, not sure if she still works there. No biggie. Oh and stock regular ass printer paper. Other than that, great store! As a resident of the neighborhood for 17 years, great job! read more

A well sized Utrecht Art Supplies is one of the latest add-ons on Myrtle. An obvious convenience to the students of Pratt Institute, locals and the artsy-fartsy me. To a commoner's eyes (mine) they seem very well stocked and organized. Prices are reasonable and all is dandy. Personally I'm just surprised that they close at 7pm and open pretty early at 8:30am on weekdays. Someone is forgetting about the all creative night owls! This location is a great one! They have a great assortment of supplies if you are looking for painting supplies, drawing/illustration paper, scrap booking materials, wood carving tools, sculpting tools and supplies, jewelry making, screen printing, all sorts of inks, pens, colored pencils, framing supplies and more! I forget if this location carries spray paints... But they have something for most everyone! Staff is helpful and polite. There are a few well-known art schools in the area, so they are always well stocked and able to special order items for you! I recommend getting the discount card.. it's free and you can use it at blick and Utrecht locations, ever since they merged! read more

This place is a sort of "if one must" situation. Its in the nabe and convenient enough location-wise, but the staff aren't knowledgable (they don't event know where things are in their own store) and the whole place has the giant corporate entity assholery about it. This place is huge! Filled with mislabeled sections, that will induce heart shattering sticker shock at the counter. There are tons of options here! But hopefully you know what you are looking for, because the staff wasn't really helpful. Polite and quick at the checkout, but nobody is going to stop and help you if your looking confused. Do some research and come prepared. This location is more modern and filled with variety than any of the locations in the city. Def worth a visit. Whatever they don't have you can also find at the Pratt Art store down the block. Prices are pretty low between the two stores, but if you have the Utrecht card it helps a little. And I'm like okay maybe I want to provide an easier way to look me up in the system when I forget my card at home. She goes ughhh fine... Utrecht sure is a reliable standby, but they won't have the personality or in depth specificity of a place like New York Central or Pearl Paint. I came for an architectural/blueprint tube and you can be almost guaranteed there will be no variations in size or color. This is a franchise, cookie cutter style store. They'll have the essential supplies and are always very sweet, but for those looking for more specific materials (printmaking for instance is limited to mostly silkscreen starter packs) than you better search elsewhere. Employees are hard to find help around here. Once i got to the register to ring up the drawing pads on sale the employee refused to give me the discount and tried to tell me it was the "yellow one" - the discount literally said what this pad was and am still waiting to see a manager . The combination of location, selection, and price is what won me over. Of course there are much less expensive options in and around this city, but Utrecht is a 5 minute walk away, I figure I'm paying the extra dollar or two for convenience. And every few months, I use the sale coupons they send people who are on the mailing list/hold the discount card. The staff is very courteous, and although they aren't all seasoned experts, it's likely because some of them are students-and there's nothing wrong with that! They're learning. They've always done their best in answering my questions, or referred me to another person on staff that had more specialized knowledge if necessary, and they never try to oversell. Unbelievable! I've never been to an art store that can't even carry basic supplies. Their prices are a joke "75% Off".... LIST PRICE. There's no savings, List price is an imaginary price they make up. Thier staff is all students, not that there's anything wrong with that, but there's nobody there that knows anything about the materials... not to mention the managers. I've been a customer here since they opened, and as a student at Pratt, I can say at first, I was very dissatisfied with their customer service and their product selection. But... that was when they first opened, and were still figuring stuff out. A year later, I can say that both the employees at Utrecht have gotten better, as well as their inventory. I have been helped numerous times upon entering the store, and I can almost always find what I am looking for. If they are out of stock on something I need or want, they will ensure that I will get it within the week, and do what they can to make sure the item gets on the shelf- whether it means ordering the item from another store, or ordering it from the warehouse to get it on their next shipment day. I am always greeted with a big smile when I get up to the registers, and have never had a really bad experience with any of the employees. They all seem to do what they can do to help. read more

I walked here for a mile and change from my job to get new brush pens; not bad of a walk but I wouldn't when its dark outside. Weird store hours 830am - 7pm - open early and closes early! Who wakes up that early? Pratt students, I guess... They have good collections of brush pens... I like Tombows... I wish I can really roam around their aisles more (tight as it seems especially some people uses carts) but I had to walk back to walk and only on my lunch break. For a hobbyist like me and wants instant gratification this is good store. Will be back for more artsy stuff. read more

False Advertising!! I went there for a 12/12/2012 special 36% discount advertised on all Utrecht brand supplies. The first student employee wanted to be helpful but did not know about any discounts. Cashier admitted that communication about these things is really bad. Then the student manager said all the sale prices were automatically applied in the check-out. When it didn't show up she said Utrecht stretcher bars were not part of the sale. Advertisement does not say anything like this. I left feeling like they had tricked me into going to their store. read more

I work for an established artist as my job, and often need stuff on the fly. We recently relocated the work studio to Clinton Hill and I came in here to get a roll of glassine. I buy stuff in bulk often online when I can, as it's cheaper and I don't have to lug it back to the studio myself. But when I do need something last minute like glassine, I expect to be able to buy it from an art supply store in the size I require in 100 yard rolls, especially one near Pratt for fuck sakes. Not a big request, but their staff didn't really care to help me when I suggested that they carry glassine in the larger lengths and widths instead of 10 yard rolls, which doesn't help me at all. The guy shrugged and told me to check back in the future instead of adding it to the store inventory of stuff to order. I went back to the studio and ordered several rolls online so that I wouldn't have to inconvenience them again. read more

Utrecht on Myrtle Ave. has bad customer service. This store is lacking experienced sales associates on the floor. As I entered, I noticed many people in the store who did not have their bags checked in. After being in the store for about 2 minutes, an associate walked passed numerous customers with large bags and did not ask to check their large bags. Instead, she came straight towards me. First, she did not greet me at all. Second, she did not ask if I needed help finding my item. Third, being the last customer in, she did kindly ask to check my bags. I told her that there are many people walking around who were in the store longer than I was, yet she never even bothered to check their belongings. Still, she did not ask me if I needed help, she just took my belongings and walked away from me. Finally after following her around to get her to help me find my item, she noticed and walked past two people with bags to ask a gentleman for his belongings (I had seen him in the window before I entered, so he had clearly been inside long before I had). Having been a manager myself, I can say that good customer service is not only the foundation of a business, but also the key to loss prevention. Customer service does not exist merely at the cash registers, but on the sales floor and during ever aspect on the customers experience there. Utrecht, you're wasting yours and your customers' money on employees who do not value your customers. They get paid to pace the floor and not assist the customers. All in all, I WILL NEVER spend my money here again. read more
