This art supplies store has a fully stocked items needed for school/ hobbies or even for businesses. Shop has two levels with products from paints, brushes, canvas, yarn, books....etc. Prices for many of the merchandise are a bit on the higher end, though it is in the heart of Soho. Spent a long while browsing the books sections which had a wide selection of creative art deco books/DIY books for home improvements. Staff was friendly and even allowed me to use the restroom located at the lower level. Overall, a great art supply store. read more

The staff are friendly and the prices are reasonable. I came to this location for the first time to do an exchange of something from their Flatbush Ave. location as I was in the area. I was always more a NY Central and Pearl Paint girl in my grad days, so it took me a while to trust Blick enough since they took over the city like Starbucks. I love the layout of this store: All the aisles are visible when you walk in, and though their selection is expansive, it doesn't seem overwhelming. The staff here are very friendly, and helpful. I asked a saleswoman to direct me, and she walked me to the section I needed even though she was in the middle of something else (but I guess at Target they're trained to do this as well). On my way to the register, another salesperson asked whether I was being helped. I was helped immediately at the counter, but one thing I had issue with are the receipts being all online added with the block to WiFi in the store. I needed WiFi to access the former and per the cashier and his supervisor who happened to be nearby, even they don't have access to the WiFi which seems insane but maybe not for some of these younger kids. It's nice to know they haven't tried to rebrand everything to their name, after having bought Brooklyn-based Utrecht, so I can feel less weird shopping there even though they're a Highland Park, Illinois-based chain and the largest art supplier in America (gulp). read more

Website is excellent - makes it very easy to find things. Their online catalogue is bountiful (tho I still shop at the smaller stores for edgier products). Usually items arrive well-packed, in excellent condition. Blick customer service is usually excellent. Shipping can be a bit slow. I do have to add, I like to support our smaller art stores when it's possible. read more

Was looking for some art supplies stuff since I was in the 14 streets union square area ,looking for some drawing markers for my nephew , And sierra came up to me ask me if I was ok two thumbs up to her and Justin the cashier he was pretty helpful as well , I found the stuff i was looking for . Parsons ( The New School ) & (Pratt instuite) 14 street campus is not too far from this location as well ,I'm pretty sure this store gets load of Fashion/Interior Designer and etc. students as well from the near by school I mention , There a Michaels arts & crafts supply store on Six avenue and 21 street , that's very similar to this store as well , But Blick arts & crafts seem to be pretty cool as well , When I'm in Brooklyn across the east river I usually go to Bick Art Materials Flatbush Avenue & Livingston Avenue , Pretty cool store there was playing some Dancehall music pretty cool , this Blick art supply store seem pretty cool compare to the one on Broadway two block north from canal street from downtown !!!! P.S.: This store remnds me of Pearl art supply store on Canal street & Broadway ( A true New yorker would know that art supply store back in the early 2000's , man that was great art supply store ) and Art & Letters art supply store in the Garment district !!!!! I used to come here religiously for art supplies. Especially during my undergrad days. It was a must to shop here. I loveeeeee this store and the smell of art supplies (i.e. pencils, paint, canvas paper). I came here to buy items for a few art classes i was taking, and they carried everything that i needed on my shopping list. They truly have an expansive selection. One can literally find every variation of an item they are seeking. The staff in here are very friendly, and helpful. They always help me find particular items i am looking for. This experience, and specifically for art supplies cannot be replicated via online shopping. I am not taking any art classes now, but i draw a lot and always have. I always come back here to get the things i need. I hope they make it through the pandemic so i can come back and shop here in peace without being stressed. This review is purely based on customer service alone! The staff is absolutely exceptional; they go out of their way to accommodate your needs. They helped me pick out a decent size canvas, shipped it to my house (additional charge per they use a 3rd party) and it arrived the very next day. Every single staff member (4 to be exact, hi Eli) were courteous, patient, knowledgeable, and above all - dealt with my numerous asks with the utmost professionalism. Pre-COVID: I came in for some supplies for a costume I was making and every staff member I interacted with was extremely friendly and helpful. It was after school and there were lots of customers both on the sales floor and in line, and they really kept things moving. I've had a rather pleasant experience here. Just started art school and my list of supplies was a whole page long. I was dying trying to look for everything in every isle. Thankfully, a woman I think her name was Sasha, she was so patient with me. She went down the whole list together with me and tried to get me the best prices and quality. I am so thankful for her or else i'll be there for 2 hours. It only took 40 minutes. The guy at the cashier was also very nice. He was very patient with me when I asked about the discounts because it didn't show up on the POS. He helped with that too. Thank you staffs for being so nice! read more

Great spot for arts and craft supplies. Large shop filled with everything an artist or art student needs. Also a good spot to pick up some things for a craft or business project. Still, it leans heavily on the artist side. Decent prices too. I used to be an art major many years ago, and now I can't even draw a stick figure. It's been a long time since I was in a store such as this. Staff was very helpful with my questions and directed me to what I needed. Sure miss Utrecht. Sure miss the old Dick Blick, come to think of it. Look, we all understand that it's not easy to have a profitable retail business in NYC, or anywhere having to compete with Amzn. However, that is no excuse for deceptive trade practices. Needed to purchase about $30 worth of supplies for a project. Not a big sale, but have had good experiences with Blick in the past and wanted to give them the trade. Blick's website gave very good prices for the (name brand, common art) items. Went to the 6th Ave. location and they were nowhere to be found. The very helpful staff on the lower level asked what I was looking for, then found the item at the 13th street store. They confirmed, "If you are a preferred member, then they will match the online price." Hiked down to 13th street, found the items in the (non-air conditioned) store, and took them to the counter, where the salesperson said, "Our matching is after shipping is added." When I blinked at this she said, "Everyone has to pay the shipping - you can't get out of that." What irritated me the most - and why I will not be choosing Blick as my first choice again anytime soon - is the sneakiness of this. If Dick Blick can't afford to match prices - we understand. But don't pretend that you match prices and then nickle and dime us with "shipping costs". Bad policy, Blick. But that's your option. My option is to shun your store. Sad, because I really, really liked Blick when you first came to New York. And I loved Utrecht. And I even like your salespeople, too. Poor thing at 13th street had to defend your poor business practices. I hope she can find a better job, with a company that lets her feel good about how they conduct themselves. read more

I'm here about once or twice a week for materials for architectural projects and it doesn't get much worse. The store is incredibly understaffed, there's always a line to check out never mind trying to get a staff member to help you- its like an act of god. Not the stores fault but corporate needs to get their shit together. Lines to check out often range in the 10 minute range and go around the store. Product range is pretty good considering the size but they don't stock a ton and often run out of popular materials. Their discount / web match card is an absolute joke, just give people the discount don't make them carry around another card to save 10 cents. 2 stars because they finally recognize a student discount.... I got the BLICK soft pastel 12 colors for about 6$, and a 9x12 sketch book for 4$, such a great deal! There are also many other discounted art materials as well you just have to look for them. I love how they organized all the pastels in colors with proper labels, to people have slight OCD like me is satisfying to look at that. I'll go back any time soon for more different colors of soft pastels as well as the pastel pencils. The staffs are friendly and asked few times of we need help. About the BLICK soft pastels: they are very powdery (I did not use the paper with lot of tooth)but easy to blend and stick on the paper. For beginner like me is a good start to try it out. read more

Yeah the employees are nice. I also love how 300 people will be in line and ACTUALLY not move for 20 minutes. I have never come into this blick and seen more than 2 registers open at a time. Just don't go there if you are in a big hurry it's really chill. Their customer service personnel are very helpful and they take care and time to assist you on the floor and especially at the check out. It's a wonderful place to step into out of the loud streets. They are probably all genius artists. I like to think it's a fun place to work because everyone seems mellow. I'd love to see a wall of their own staff artwork on display . This Utrecht is very new and carries everything one would need to make some interesting and successful works of Art. Thought they don't have quite as many kids/craft supplies as Blick on Bond Street or a Michael's Craft Store (do those even exist in NYC anymore!?!) they do have a small section of kids/craft supplies (no googly eyes though :( ). They have a wide variety of canvas and linens (on panel, stretched and unstretched). They also had an excellent selection of Golden and Utrecht brand paints (my personal favorites) in addition to a wide-variety of other brands. The Williamsburg paints and spray paints are locked up, but it wasn't difficult to find a helpful sales person to unlock them for me. It's location near Parsons and the Union Square subway stops (and Brooklyn!) make it probably the most conveniently located art store in the city. I wish them success, and highly recommend checking out this art store. read more

This location is super busy, on a Wednesday, from 11- 1:30 in the afternoon. It's a weekday and I'm surprised by how hectic it is. My experience shopping here felt like the first day of school, shopping for school supplies at Staples. If you're not a art genius like I am, I suggest you come here as soon as the store opens so you can get the one on one help you need. I am not an art major, but I am taking a professional art class and I no idea what the art terms listed by my professor were. Also, you should come here early because those kids at The New School are right next door, and they'll grab the materials YOU need before you can even step foot out of your house! I was missing 6 items on my list, that were out of stock at 11 in the morning! Although I DID receive some help from the store associates, I felt like it was super stressful to pin them down and ask them for help when they're busy handling packages. I had to run around the store and look for random employees to help me. Such. A. Workout...I'm really glad that my friend came with me, she was helpful and tall (by the way, you need to be tall to reach some of the heavy body paints). So, if you're a shorty like I am, harass a tall friend to tag along with you. It'll really help - trust me! Even though Blick and Utrecht are affiliated with each other, you can only return items belonging solely to the Blick location (237 W..) or the Utrecht location (E13 st). Damn, it sucks! Also, there's no more student discount (10%). It doesn't exist anymore. It died. Instead, you have this preferred card thing which you sign up for free at the register and they try to match the item your buying with the online price of your item. If your item is cheaper online, they'll refer to that price, vice versa. The materials here don't come cheap. After spending much money here, I am now a starving artist.... -sad face- -cries- read more

Utrecht has everything you would need for any art project (well, except for small, skinny glue sticks the last time I went - they were all out). The person that helped me was so extremely nice - helped me pick out the perfect paint for my wood art project. I'm a fan of the Golden paints now. The people who work there always go above and beyond to try to help me get a discount (even when I'm no longer a student). I guess they want the customers coming back for more (or else the prices are really that much more overpriced). The only reason I didn't come in one time was because the lines were SOOOO LONG. This was last week. At different times the lines can be long or there might be no one in there. So weird. read more

After much deliberation (and internet connection mishaps), I am writing this review. I came to this store last week after my mom met me for lunch. After we parted, I went ahead and came to Union Square (as I work right around the corner), but it was way too early to go to work. I decided to visit this Blick to buy a few things and kill some time. I just found about its existence a week before when a coworker and I walked by it one night after closing. I came around 3:00-3:30PM after sketching in Union Square. When I came in, an employee greeted me, always a plus. This store seems understaffed like most Blicks, though. It's smaller than the one on 6th ave, which is where I go occasionally for art supplies I don't simply order online. I found what I was looking for- a caliper and a few new pens for sketching. I sculpt, so I was looking at their clay section, which had a good amount of products. Overall, a decent selection for a small store. I've only occasionally visited Blick since I graduated back in 2014, but noticed their prices have gone higher and higher since they joined with Utrecht. There were some things I thought of buying but decided to check the prices elsewhere. Overall, a three or four star rating. So why one star? Because a guy (who was obviously loss prevention), was following me around the store. A tall black guy in a black suit with a sort of "crew cut" like hairstyle. I've taken a security guard class before, so I'm familiar with their techniques. Furthermore, in the retail store that I work at, we employees work closely with LP. Now, loss prevention is supposed to check on customers, but this was was the most blatant, targeted experience I've ever had. Discrimination at its finest. I wasn't even in the store that long before I noticed him tailing me, maybe only a few minutes. I was looking at mechanical pencil leads when I went around the corner to the next aisle. I saw him pretending to look at some merchandise on the end of the aisle. That's fine. LP does "fake-shopping" to keep and eye on customers. But as I kept going through aisles, he was still doing the same, always happening to be near the same aisle I'm in. Then one time, he tried to walk from one aisle to the next. He was so busy looking at me that he ran into another customer! That's when we first made eye-contact, as he darted back towards the way he came. That's when I first suspected he was tailing me with certainty. As I wanted to burn some time, I visited most aisle except the painting and paper aisles. Just trying to take my time and relax. But I couldn't enjoy myself. As I started moving more often, he started to do a sort of brisk walking back and forth between the aisles. He kept up this odd, quick pacing back and forth, always making sure to peek in whatever aisle I was in. By this time, I had made eye contact a few more times already, and most LP associates (that actually know what they're doing) know when you should back off and not make it so obvious you're tailing customers. But not this one. It got so ridiculous that at one point, I visited a section I had no interest in just to see if he was still following me. I went to the Moleskin notebooks on the far side of the store and yep, there he was. Now, I had enough and finally went to the checkout line just to pay and leave. It seemed here that he had finally stopped. Wishful thinking. The LP guy hadn't stopped. There was only one person ahead of me in line, but the only register open was on the far side of the store almost near the entrance. At the register, I saw the LP guy go up to the sole cashier and say something to him in a low voice before walking off. When my turn to checkout came, the cashier was still friendly, but the air about him was off. He seemed guarded. That's when I realized the guy probably told the cashier to watch out for the "shoplifter." The nerve! This LP guy really thought he was tailing a thief when he was just making a normal customer miserable! I should have left the stuff I was going to buy at the register! For anyone reading this, you can decide if this was the isolated case of a badly-trained, woefully ignorant LP associate himself, or something the manager himself condoned . For me, it doesn't matter. All I know is that I won't be coming back to be tailed like a criminal. Was this experience enough to keep me from going back to any Blick, forever? I buy most of my art supplies online now with my Prime account, so this experience has pretty much cemented my transition to online. Even in Blick/Utrecht stores where I feel I wasn't tailed, I'll remember this experience and shop elsewhere. P.S., to the ignorant LP associate who ruined my day- people of all colors steal. My own store gets robbed blind of a million $ each year. If you think only following people like me will lower your theft, you're missing out on most of your shoplifters. In fact, someone probably stole something while you were following this honest customer. read more

I was glad to find another art supply place to get things I need. In this case I was buying for someone else. This Blick on E. 13th St. I found the staff to be extremely helpful. Sasha helped me immensely in the paper dept. when I was undecided which pad to take. I also had a great 'life conversation' with her. So personable. Then Jay in pens & inks assisted me, and he was very knowledgable. I like when staff are more than 'just a job', and have some enthusiasm for their work, or at least their product. Art supply places are getting harder to come by, so I know I'll be back to this store. read more

The only thing that aggravated me is that only one person of the 5 I asked knew what the hell a "painting by numbers" kit is. How do you work in an art store and not know what that is?
