Who wants to shop at a store with rude, unhelpful staff?? Despite the selection and convenience, one unpleasant saleswoman left me unlikely to return. On a recent visit, I needed help selecting an unfamiliar product. Store was pretty empty. I asked woman at counter for help. She could barely be bothered - she was completely consumed by leafing through the pages of her magazine (!!) Gave me one-word answers, then back to the magazine. Not once, but three or four times. I love the variety of art supplies, especially the wide range of colors for pencils and pastels. The Blick brand bound 8.5" x 11" archival sketch books are not only great for drawing, but also make good journals with thumbnails interspersed. The supplies...fine...supplies. Value...meh Service...terrible. We had a few items to return, with a receipt. The staff member acted like I was putting him out; dead silence, imploding with a hissy fit because he had to input extra numbers because items were purchased from another Blick store. Prices are high, but selection is pretty good - although they are not infrequently out of stuff I expected to find - I think I will start calling ahead to make sure my item is on the shelf. Customer service is decent. Not the individual stores' fault, but I have a beef with corporate advertising "we match our web price" and it takes reading fine print at another link that "web price" = price + shipping+sales tax so, as the store staff explained to me, there's rarely any price change when you are purchasing in the store. Excuse me, corporate, but you're charging the customer, who spent gas and time to get to your store, for delivery?!! I'm even more determined to take my business elsewhere unless absolutely necessary. read more

This place is great because it opens at 7:45am for students across the street at CCA. Other stores open at 9am. I hate having to wait til 9, especially if I am working on some project and ran out of supplies in the middle of the night. read more

I brought an heirloom piece of art to get the glass replaced. They were very professional helping me to pick a protective (and not cheap) option. The day I was told was the latest it would be finished, I get a call saying "the frame was lost." I don't know how they lost this large, antique frame, but I am extremely disappointed and warn anyone planning to frame art with them. read more

Their online "match" policy is dishonest for a variety of reasons. We talked to two different reps who said conflicting things, and in the end bought the item on amazon. 1) they say they match the prices of blick.com but the item was on their shelf for $30 and online on their site for $15- they discounted the price to $27 and said the difference is what it would cost in shipping and handling. 2) the first rep said they match Amazon but not 3rd party sellers on Amazon. The second rep (cashier) said they don't match Amazon at all. 3) you have to sign up with their card in order for them to match their online store 4) it's kind of sneaky anyway to list retail price in store and then offer it cheaper at checkout only if you know to ask read more

Um, hello...my new favorite place. My friend and I stumbled upon this place while exploring 4th street for art supplies. We saw it on the way there and boy am I glad we decided to stop by. If you paint, draw, hand letter, write, etc, this is definitely the place for you. I personally love hand lettering, and they have all the pens plus more. Online, I was only able to find 6 different tipped pens. At Blick, they have 8 PLUS colored ones. They let you test them out as well and have a huge supply of pens. If you're a painter like my friend, they have everything from canvasses to paint brushes to literally anything and everything you would need. They sell moleskines, the cutest hand-lettered cards, funny notepads/notebooks, and basically everything a Tall Mouse would have AND more. Great customer service too! read more

Even though Blick's is further from campus than Utrecht, I definitely prefer Blick's because of the atmosphere. It's different from Utrecht, I enjoy taking my time exploring the place and the staff are really cool. They give me tips and advice on how to approach my projects and they know their stuff! Blick's is the first place I go to if when I need screen printing ink or Munnys/Raffys/Bubs/Trikkys/Foomis/Krackas/other Kidrobot DIY toys. We went in here to get some paint pens. Thanks to the state of California, such pens are required to be kept under lock and key, thanks to graffiti laws. Of course, Blick's sells a whole line of spray paint that's got a graffiti logo and seems to be tailor made just for graffiti artists. They also sell graffiti art books and how-to books. Anyway, we wanted some pens from behind the locked cabinet. Of course, the 8 or so employees who manned the store had no idea where the key was. We were told to wait until the manager returned. 10 minutes, we were told. Not one person from the floor went to look. No one seemed to care or to want to help us in any other way. Finally, 10 minutes later, we asked again if the manager was still coming. The black-haired gothy guy who we asked looked at us with such disdain and scorn that I was really offended. He gruffly told us that we would just have to wait. He had the whole "i'm better than you" attitude, and rolled his eyes at us. Finally, after 20 minutes of waiting, we left for Office Depot, where we found reasonable facsimiles of what we needed. I would have preferred to get the stuff at Blick, since they have an excellent selection, but after the clerks all treated us with such scorn, we decided never to return. Horrible service. How can you not know where the key is for a display cabinet that holds 1000's of pens, none of which can be found outside said cabinet. Just sloppy. read more

I had the most awful experience here. As soon as we walked in the store an employee asked for our bags. I dont give my bag to anyone, so I said no. He then rudely replied "just as long as you dont steal anything." It took a couple minutes for the comment to sink in as I was in shock that an employee at someplace I am going to spend my money would insinuate that I am a thief. I love this store.It has damn near everything you need to get down and dirty as far as any art project goes.

My husband shops at this art store for his supplies, he does a lot of inking and drawing. It's a pretty large store and has had everything my Illustrator husband has needed. They have supplies for professional artists, dabblers, and arts and crafters. If they don't have what you need, let them know and they can sometimes order it for you. The staff are friendly and willing to help you locate the right art supplies. They also offer lots of classes just in case your New Years resolution is to do something more creative this year. You can pick up some entertaining art projects for your kids too. They have a good selection of high quality ink, brushes, and calligraphy pen nubs as well too. The prices aren't cheap but aren't bad! It's worth a visit. read more

This place has a very big selection of basically everything: paint, paper, art markers, canvases. However, maybe one out of three times that I go there, they happen to be out of stock of just the thing that I want. That's kind of annoying. I give this place 3 stars for having all the art supplies you could want and great sales. It loses two for the staff. The people here are your typical self-proclaimed art douchebags. Too aloft to help anyone who doesn't also look like an artist, and generally really unprofessional in many aspects. Walking around the store I usually pass several employees and no matter how puzzled or lost I look, I never get the usual "Can I help you find something? Do you have any questions?" Ever. There are usually 2 or 3 employees chilling at the registers, but only one of them ever actually does the transactions. Even if people are waiting in line, the others will simply lean on the counter looking too-cool-for-school. Whatever. read more

It's a convenient location, lots of parking (not on the street & free; which is a given in LA but a luxury in the Bay Area), its clean, pretty big, they let you bring your dogs in, fairly decent prices, great sale prices, student discount, friendly/helpful staff, awesome selection... Only things that kept me from giving 4 stars: the customers, which one customer takes up an entire aisle there! No kidding, these people must have the biggest personal space bubbles I have ever seen! They stand straight in the middle of everything, take up all the room and if more than one customer is in a single aisle, they keep their distance so much its like they're afraid of getting some highly contagious disease. Furthermore, if you are like "excuse me," to get by or get a product that they're been standing in front of for an eternity, they look at you as if you aren't speaking a known language and still they don't move. read more

I came in here and greeted in a very friendly way. However looking at the person, I felt you will find more of an artist type at the Apple Store. Blick Art Materials is a nice place if you are not super serious about your results. They may have or not have that perfect tool, but certainly because it caters to hobbyist, craft artists or students, it likely won't be here if you seek something specialized. Even when it comes down to types of paper, they will carry the standards brands or sizes, but if need something that isn't particularly popular in size, weight or grid lined, it won't be here. The regular price for items is pretty marked-up. The store has a lot of supplies, but not EVERYTHING. I would rather make the trip across the bay bridge to hit up FLAX. This particular branch is fairly large... great, although the thing about art supply stores is that most people don't really need to buy as much as they do to make really interesting stuff.
