Recently I had a few bad experiences with vets and groomers in this area to care for my senior dog of 18 years, being totally disappointed I started searching for a vet who could at least show some level of compassion and professionalism, the money was not the issue in any case although the previous vets did gave us a huge bill without justification! Not even a follow up or return a call! Thankfully my research online and what I was looking for directed me to Dr. Blevins a native of Northern VA and a founder of Oakton - Vienna Veterinarian Hospital. I quickly called and with only couple of rings a soft spoken lady answered the phone she was understanding of our situation and knowing what we had been through. I asked for appt with Dr. Blevins and the next day got to meet him and his very compassionate technician and office staff! Dr. Blevins was compassionate, professional and above all understood our concerns from past experiences, he took his time and answered all of our questions so we can come up with a plan for our senior dog. We appreciate the level of support we received. We also thank his technician Alyssa who was friendly and professional, took her time to answer all of our questions and even gave our little senior dog a bag of goodies with his cute bow tie. I urge all pet owners to do your research before ending up in one of areas vet hospitals with chaotic conditions and no professional staff! All the best

I've had a terrible experience with another vet in Fairfax and decided to give this place a try after 2 people recommended it. The doctor allowed me to be with my dog as she checked up on him and treated him. Both the doctor and the staff tried their hardest to ensure my dog was feeling comfortable by giving him treats so he could warm up to them, and some gravy to distract him as they were drawing blood. The doctor was also courteous, patient, clear in communication and explanations, and ensured that I was also comfortable along with my dog. At the previous vet, I had to be the proactive one as they did not check my dog even for regular things due at an annual checkup (e.g., heartworm) despite taking my dog in for the annual checkup. Moreover, they didn't notify me of vaccines that were set to expire in a couple weeks. At Vienna Animal Hospital, the doctor spent time with me to go through my dog's medical record and vaccines, pointed out which ones that were set to expire soon, and which ones she thought wasn't needed. She didn't push me to buy things I didn't need or want. It was overall such a great experience. Very happy with the care here!!

My pets were lucky because for about 12 years they had Dr. Wolf who was absolutely professional and compassionate. Unfortunately, Dr. Wolf passed away when my youngest ca, Paung, was 8 years old. About 9 months ago. Paung was diagnosed with hyperthyroid. The drug they gave us to control Paung's thyroid was expired. I didn't notice the expiration date until 5 days later. So for 5 days my cat was taking expired medicine. After that I decided to try to get the same medicine form Amazon, but it required the vet to fax in a prescription. I called the Vienna animal Hospital to remind them to send in the prescription, the receptionist said they would have the Dr. do it. But a week passed and nothing was done, Amazon finally sent me a notice saying the order was cancelled. On March 20th, 2026. Paung, who was almost 17 year old, was exhibiting signs of pain. We thought he was having constipation since he had a few similar episodes before. But this one seemed to be worse. So we made an 8:00 a.m. appointment with Dr. Chervez at Vienna Animal Hospital. We arrived 5 minutes early. As we waited, we saw three other 8:00 a.m. appointments being admitted into patients rooms. 5 minutes passed 8:00, my husband asked the receptionist what was going on. She said since we'd arrived 5 minutes early, it was normal for us to wait. Meanwhile my cat was distressed and crying constantly. Another 15 minutes passed, we asked if the Dr. was available, they said he was, just delayed. We didn't know what that meant. Was he there or he had not arrived yet. But the receptionist didn't seemed to know. We finally decided to leave. On our way out, I told the front desk that they were not very professional. They answer was "OK" with a shrug of their shoulders. We had to go to another vet since Paung was obviously in pain, but there was no appointment available until 1:00 p.m. It turned out Paung's kidneys had failed and he was euthanized 2 days later. Our hearts are broken because of the passing of a beloved pet who'd given us love and comfort for more than 15 years. But what we are having a hard time to accept the fact that Vienna Animal Hospital had made Paung suffer unnecessarily in the final days of his life. I don't believe they have the uttermost professionalism, compassion and empathy required as a veterinarian hospital.

I was devastated to see her in that state. They pre-charged me over $5,000 for care and insisted she stay overnight with IV fluids and for more tests, even after a call that she was better according to the vet. Unfortunately, her condition worsened during the stay. When I took her to another veterinary hospital shortly after, the follow-up veterinarian immediately removed the IV, explaining that it was doing my pet harm. They also told me there could have been a simpler alternative treatment that would not have required an overnight stay. After evaluating her, the second veterinarian advised that euthanasia was the most humane option. I reported these concerns to the clinic by email and to management but received no follow-up. The veterinarian only contacted me after I initiated a chargeback with my credit card company, which the clinic disputed. I am still extremely upset about this experience and the impact it had on my beloved pet. I would like to see the clinic take accountability and make this right -- both for me and so other clients don't experience something similar. I am open to discussing a fair resolution directly with the clinic.

Despite that info, your team made a strong case about selling prescription treatment and you admitted to me verbally that your technicians didn't communicate that and weren't well trained. 2. When the technician lady I spoke with yesterday kept on cutting me off and saying that I was the one who rejected the heartworm test because your hospital "always" does things right, yes I got frustrated. I told her I was going to hang up and that I would find another hospital because I didn't want to continue being talked over and gaslighted. In my perspective, a proper response from your team would have been "I am surprised to hear that wasn't relayed to you. There must have been a mistake." And not "Our hospital always asks the owner so it must have been you who rejected it" esp when she couldn't find any records 3. Lastly it is my bad for assuming that the technician was the doc's wife. I am truly sorry for that. Being Korean myself and supporting a lot of Korean establishments in NOVA, I see a lot of husband-wife businesses. That lady's demeanor said she didn't care about losing my business at all so I assumed she was related to the owner. I am sorry as it was a cultural misguided assumption. Since you say that you are hoping to improve, my sincere feedback for your hospital is below: 1.) Please take some time to improve on empathy and customer service. Take a moment to listen to the customer. Please refrain from being defensive, cutting people off, arguing back, etc. I have never in my 20+ years in NOVA have come across an establishment where I felt the communication was this difficult. 2.) Kindly take the time to talk with patients & train your technicians on products they are selling, on customer service, on promoting clear/transparent processes. Yes you treat animals. But you are the main communicators with those pets' owners. Does a doctor at the hospital only checks up on the patients and prescribes treatment? No - they talk with family members, clearly explaining and assuring of what they are going to do and train their nurses to best assist with the treatment. That is part of the job and is a huge part of patient care. I have a right to my experiences and to share my perspective as do you. Please don't accuse my experience as being slanderous and unfactual. Obviously there was a lot of miscommunication but maybe that in itself can be a starting place for you to reflect on how to best mitigate those problems in the future. I wish you and your business best of luck. ---- It's not worth the stress, people. Please don't be swayed by the prices & look elsewhere. Three main reasons why I'm taking my dog elsewhere - Unclear Practice/Process, Poor Communication, Aggressive Attitude toward customers. A couple of weeks ago, I brought my dog in for an annual checkup. He was having diarrhea but I wasn't too worried as it happens occasionally, but since my dog's annual checkup was due in a month or so, I thought why not bring him in early just to check? I relayed this as I checked my dog in. Then a headache ensued with their technicians trying to sell my husband this comprehensive treatment plan to my dog. I was so confused - how could there be a treatment plan when the results of the bloodwork wasn't even out? When I went to pick up my dog, I told the doc - I get all the other shots you're giving my dog, but "what's the difference between getting my dog prescription food vs. feeding him a bland diet for his diarrhea?" And the doc said, "you don't have to cook." ...I was baffled. There was a miscommunication, a large part of it was due to undertrained technicians which the doc admitted to, and yet he had a standoff with me for 30 minutes. Whatever, I just wanted to take my dog home. THEN, a couple weeks later today, I was ordering heartworm medicine through Chewy and they declined it. I call the hospital and this Korean lady whom I assumed to be his wife based on how she was asserting herself, tells me that my dog didn't get his annual heartworm test. I asked her why then didn't they tell me when I went in for a checkup and then she aggressively argued that she's sure that someone must have told me. She looked in my records, but there was no record of me saying I declined the heartworm test, because I didn't. Yelp-fam, I told you the facts. You decide if the headache is worth it. Prices are great. But if you're anything like me and want the absolute best care for my dog and be treated in a professional/kind way, then pay a bit extra to get care elsewhere. Walk away. Also, DM me your favorite vets in NOVA. Looking for a new one for my fur-best friend.

By the time we got in the car, it was everywhere. My dog has never pooped in the house, so this was completely unacceptable. I complained to the office manager. Nothing changed. Now it happened again, EXACTLY the same way, after a visit for an ear infection. Either they leave dogs in cages all day without taking them out, or their cages are dirty--they clearly don't care. I'm extremely upset. Tomorrow I'm going to reach out to them again and complain. I don't think they do anything to improve their service A poor dog has to go through this! I feel so bad for any dog that goes there. I will never take my dog there again. This place is careless, disgusting, and unprofessional. If you care about your dog, DO NOT GO HERE.

AVOID DR WU - Absolutely unacceptable treatment of our dog - avoid this Dr.Wu at all costs…read more We had a deeply disturbing experience at this clinic that left us shaken and furious. The veterinarian who saw our dog was not just lacking in bedside manner--he was aggressive, forceful, and outright harmful in the way he handled her. When administering the Bordetella vaccine (a simple nasal spray that we've given her for years without issue), he struck her in the face with the applicator. There is absolutely no reason for such physicality with a non-invasive spray, especially for a dog that was already calm and cooperative. It got worse. During her rectal exam, he violently yanked her tail upward, overextending it to the point where his own hand was visibly shaking. Our dog yelped, and we were horrified. This was not firm restraint--it was objectively painful and unnecessary force. Dr. Wu did not seem in control of his actions and was acting erratically. There is a serious difference between being no-nonsense and being unhinged, and unfortunately, he crossed every line. Based on what we saw, I have real concerns about his behavioral stability and whether he should be practicing around animals at all. We're heartbroken that our dog had to go through this. If you care about your pet's emotional and physical well-being, do not bring them here.

I worked with Dr Hawthorne at Veterinary Surgical Centers Vienna during the last months of my cat's life, and I truly do not know how I would have gotten through that time without her and this clinic. Before finding them, I had a devastating experience with my regular vet, Small Door on 14th St. I brought my cat in for what I thought was a routine visit but mentioned that his belly felt slightly distended. I was repeatedly told it was probably nothing. We did an x ray and again I was told it was probably nothing, though there was a shadow. I knew something was wrong and pushed for an ultrasound, which revealed a tumor. After that, despite begging for communication and guidance, I essentially never heard from them again. I was sent to Friendship Animal Hospital, which was fine, and they told me my cat would likely need surgery for what they believed was a benign mass. Wanting another opinion, I contacted Veterinary Surgical Centers Vienna because of their excellent reviews. They got back to me quickly and told me Dr Hawthorne would call me. She ended up calling around 9:30 that night. I cried on the phone explaining everything and she listened with real compassion. She gave thoughtful, honest advice and treated me like a person who loved her animal, not just another case. Things moved quickly and I ended up taking my cat to Friendship for an emergency appointment early the next morning. They told me we had to do the surgery immediately or not at all. It was around 7 in the morning and I called Dr Hawthorne again. She spoke to me like I was family and helped me think through the decision. When I asked Friendship for advice they said, "We are surgeons, we are always going to tell you to do the surgery." Dr Hawthorne helped give me perspective in a much more human way. Unfortunately the surgery revealed he likely had cancer, and it turned out he had two different cancers. Within a week fluid returned in his belly and he needed to be drained. At Friendship the procedure was extremely expensive and required sedation, which I was not comfortable with but did because I wanted him to be okay. After doing this twice I called VSC Vienna. By that point Dr Hawthorne had already reached out for updates and continued offering guidance. I brought him there for the next drain and because of their skill sedation was not necessary. They were gentle, incredibly kind, and it cost less than half the price. For the next several months I brought him in regularly to be drained. At Friendship I had to fast him, withhold medication, and leave him there all day while paying nearly three times as much. At VSC Vienna they understood that we were simply trying to keep him comfortable during the end of his life. They held my hand through everything and reassured me that because he still seemed happy I was doing the right thing. During the last drain he seemed less happy and Dr Hawthorne spoke with me honestly and gently about how we might be getting closer to the end. I needed that guidance because my only goal was to keep him comfortable and never push him too far. When things finally changed I called her again and she helped me understand that it was time. I arranged for him to pass peacefully at home. Afterward I updated the clinic and both the clinic and Dr Hawthorne sent cards, which meant more to me than they probably realize. I cannot imagine going through those four months without them. If I ever have another animal I do not care how far the drive is. I will only go here. They are compassionate, thoughtful, incredibly skilled, and deeply human. My cat was happy and comfortable until the very end because of Dr Hawthorne and everyone at Veterinary Surgical Centers Vienna.
