To be honest, my nerves were a bit frazzled that morning. My day had started around 5:00 AM, and with news predicting a major winter snowstorm later that evening, my mood was heading in the wrong direction. Even though I often choose self-checkout for speed, I decided to go through the regular checkout line and I'm so glad I did, because I had the pleasure of meeting Kiara. From the moment I approached her register, Kiara provided exceptional customer service. Kiara was: Efficient Focused Friendly Cheerful Calm ...and welcoming from start to finish. What could have been just another stressful errand became a genuinely fast, fun, and pleasant experience because of her energy and professionalism. Before leaving, I felt compelled to share my appreciation with two managers because Kiara truly made an impact. Kiara was my calm before the storm. Thank you, Kiara, for showing how much kindness and excellent service can brighten someone's day.

Theft is no excuse since technology can prevent theft of carts and they have 2 guards at the door as well. Safeway needs to show more respect to its customers and its employees.

It's worth browsing around for awhile just to get a sense of where they're beating the prices of places like Safeway and Giant's. But even stuff I think is pretty cheap at both of those stores can be found for better prices here. For instance, I just picked up 9 limes for $1. There are often many pre-wrapped fruits and veggies that are discounted heavily. Obviously some of those are probably nearing the end of their shelf life, but as someone that lives relatively close by, it's easy to pick up a groceries I'll need for cooking within the next day or two. Staff are always super friendly when I go in and check out and really have had zero complaints after shopping there maybe 20 times or so now.

We got three ripe mangoes for $2, 1 lb of serranos for $2, and three giant green peppers for $2. The spice section was also particularly well stocked, with options that you can't find at any of the nearby stores. The store itself is immaculately clean and tidy, and appears to be family owned. Will definitely be back when I need corn tortillas, a mangonada fix, jalapeños, or a cold Jarritos.

Besides that, here's the low-down on super low prices compared to Gee-Ant, Whole Paycheck and TradenJerk: * Eggs (not cage-free, but cheep cheep cheep) * Tortillas * Meat - they butcher their meats onsite and their volume sales ensure meat is always fresh * Spices (bags) * Cilantro and culantro, and some fresh veggies Prices for "regular" grocery foods and products are usually a bit more than the big stores up the street. For some reason cheese and dairy is much higher than the big G. If you're a price shopper, you know how to make the different stores work for your budget.

I've shopped here a dozen times, and they carry many items that you simply won't be able to find at a traditional grocery store. However it is somewhat more expensive for the average products like orange juice and milk. The larger grocery chains have better prices overall because they can buy their products wholesale for much less than a small grocery store such as this one. The shopping experience and the interior of the store itself is nearly identical as to what you would find in Mexico or Latin America. They have a decent meat and seafood section, and they also have the most basic produce items. The times that I have come here we're to purchase only a few items. Today I purchased a bag of oranges, and a half gallon of milk.

I always see employees and managers stocking and cleaning during EVERY visit that I make; especially in produce, which is a welcome sight you don't see in many bigger stores. Even during the height of the DC Shut Down at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic response, this store kept up with demand. Bleach, detergents, ammonia, cleaning supplies and other "newly" in-demand staples remained in good supply, even when the large chain stores were sold out for weeks. The produce department is VERY good, and their prices on produce cannot be beat, even when considering the convenience of the store might lead you to think they would be tempted to over charge like CVs or 7/11. They don't. In fact, we specifically buy our potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, onions, and just about every Caribbean and Asian spice you might want, from this store. I have become an addict to Serrano and jalapeño peppers and cook them in almost everything now. Seriously, we will never again put up with spoiled produce from Amazon and Giant/PeaPod deliveries when this store is 1 block from home. They sell almost every imaginable type of fresh and hard cheeses for Central American cuisine. Seriously, there's 10 types and brands of queso fresco, crema, and frying cheese--it's all there and well represented. They also have good household items. I buy the large outdoor incense sticks here (3 for $1)--our front porch stays fragrant and crisp, which is very pleasant in the summer! Need a mini molcajete to make guacamole? They've got you covered. Looking for fresh caught, whole fish (red snapper, whiting, trout) that they will cut and clean on demand? Done. Do you love getting live blue crabs--they frequently have those during the summer. Of course, like any store, everything isn't perfect. I am a bit underwhelmed about the deli cases (lunch meat and sausage), but that's just a personal issue because I am extremely picky about selection and freshness. However, it is all suitable if you're in a pinch. If you want a HUGE selection of dried beans, rice, corn meals, corn flours, and canned goods--you're in luck! Over all, I'm a huge fan of this store. Very happy it's just around the corner in my neighborhood!

I love the eclectic feel and the friendly, personable staff. It's generally clean and organized even if the layout is hard to follow. I appreciate the variety of ingredients I can get here, from fresh nopales to cashew milk to tamarind to canned ackee. The huge number of fresh tortillas, both flour and corn, is also awesome. The only thing that would make Avenue better is a more diverse selection--it's missing some basics like nuts and tofu and fresh herbs (besides cilantro and parsley). If those gaps were filled this would be my regular grocery store!
