If you are looking for a great way to avoid most of the crowds in Birch Bay, want to see wildlife…read moreand get some sun while doing all of this... come by and rent a kayak! I came here over the Labor Day weekend with a group of friends and rented a single kayak $20 for about 1.5hrs. The guy who rented to us was really nice and laid back about the time return. It was so much fun! Lots of seals, gulls, red jellyfish, baby crabs, the Peace Arch (entry way to Canada) all within the Semiahmoo Bay area! Across the bay is Surrey, Canada which was a bit far for me to kayak in the time allowance but really cool to be able to see so much in this area. Motor boating also shares this bay area, but the traffic was not too bad so my little kayak didn't get gulfed up in the waves =D Come give it a try! Double kayaks, paddle boards and boats are also for rent. A better place to rent kayaks than Birch Bay!

***Birch Bay location under the Westmark resort*****…read more I'll preface this by saying we tried twice and couldn't even spend our money here!!! We stopped one day to ask about pricing. My fiancé spoke with the male owner. He was very nice. And the pricing for a SUP were really reasonable and we decided on 7/4 we would rent one or two boards. My father and I went in on the 4th and asked about the boards. The female owner was a little pushy about my weight and not having a board at this location but I could find one suitable to my size at their Semiahmoo location. Now I know I'm a big girl...and I felt she was sort of tactful but very short. She was more concerned about her personal phone calls and have her 4th of July plans set then helping a customer. My father and I ran into the man outside and he said if we came in early the next day he'd get us all set up. He said the boards there would be just fine and obviously didn't feel that my weight was an issue worth mentioning. So we returned on the morning of the 5th. The male owner seemed busy tidying up and getting the store front ready so I walked up to the counter to wait on whoever might notice me first. The female owner came up and this time was not as tactful. She was very pushy and this was our conversation. I said I wanted to rent SUP boards to which she responded that I was too heavy and had to go to Semiahmoo. I told her I was getting it for our house full of people and she said "so you'd still need a heavier weight board. Ours don't exceed 225lbs" so now not only is she still repeatedly calling me overweight she is now assuming I'm severely over this weight. And she yet again said I had to go to the Semiahmoo location. And I asked "so I can go rent a board up there and bring it down here for all of us to try" and she said "of course not. You have to ride up there if someone like you want to do it" At that point I told her it doesn't work for us and left quickly before I started to cry. I got my dad got in the car and left. When I returned to our cottage and all my family saw my tear stained face and I told them the exchange I had...they were livid! My mother, father and sister returned to the shop to speak with the lady. She rolled her eyes, told my family they were "making a mountain out of a molehill" and literally walked away. So apparently she had no problem telling other people they are overweight (despite not being a little twig herself) and Lord knows what else but she in no way can handle it when the heat is on her. I must say that the male owner is a very nice man!!! He came over and got involved and was willing to help us out however he could to make up for this unfortunate situation! He said that he was a big guy and he can use the boards and that it might be harder but we could use them! So I'm not sure what her problem is but she has ruined our desire to ever spend our money with them. And being an owner up here at birch bay we will urge our friends and neighbors to do the same.

Wonderfully run tours for gay men. I took their 12 day tour of Spain which included Barcelona,…read moreGranada, Sevilla and Madrid. I enjoyed their helpful yet flexible format so much I'm planning my next tour with them. Unlike other group tours, you're not stuck on a bus and forced into their schedule. You can go with the group to popular locations or you can spend time on your own, or both! It's really the best of both worlds, having a reliable tour leader to take you to see the sites--as well as having all the free time you want to explore on your own. There's a walking tour of each city, and a list of the most popular sites. You choose what you want to do, and the tour leader creates a schedule so your interests don't conflict. You go to big attractions, like Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, as a group because they've arranged for tickets in advance (without which you can't get in). Our group leaders, Dan, was always helpful, organized, kind, cheerful, always calm, and funny. He made sure we got to see what we wanted to see, either as a group or individually. The 14 gay guys on the trip were all good-natured and easy to get along with. As well as having a great format, Detours is also an excellent value as travel gets more expensive. You stay at lovely, centrally located hotels, with a buffet breakfast included to keep you going all day. The group meets for dinner which you can attend or not, as always, it's your choice. Transportation between cities on the tour are also included. It's a low stress, great fun way to discover the world with like-minded people.

We weren't disappointed. Our guide, Darren, was fantastic. He was attentive and knowledgable - he was fun, friendly and knowledgable, while also keeping the group on track. The entire trip was fantastic, but the highlight for us was really exploring Jordan. We enjoyed floating in the Dead Sea, were amazed by Petra, and were truly impressed by the Wadi Rum desert. One of our highlights was going out into the desert at night and enjoying the starlit sky. This was our 7th trip with Detours, and it won't be our last. We love their relaxed approach and the small group concept. This vacation is definitely worth checking out if you want to explore this part of the world without the hassle of planning everything yourself.
