They asked if we had any questions or needed help. Since we did not, they just let us do our thing. I liked that. It gets intimidating having people always watching you or floating around if you do not want it. We did see them answering questions and helping people who requested it, so if you are nervous or in need of assistance they will happily help you out. There were also life jackets, wet suits, and even dry bags available for rental in addition to the equipment (canoes, paddle boards, sail boats). You reserve a slot and off you go to launch from their nice ramp, which is also open to the public. I definitely recommend wearing flip flops or water shoes. I am not from the area, so did not know what to expect. It was a bit rocky in some areas so I was glad to not be launching barefoot. The staff we had that day were fantastic. They were very nice and many of them very experienced and helpful. My friend told me they were also all volunteers. They do have a tip jar for their assistance though, so be sure to bring some cash to support them! All around great experience and I highly recommend if you are in the area looking for something fun to do!

The person working at the rental shack was super friendly and helpful with directing us to our rental boat. We pushed off from shore peddling backward until we reached a good spot to turn ourselves around and move forward with our adventure. Much to our disappointment the boat would only turn to the left no matter which direction you try to steer it in while peddling forward. So at this point we are just doing circles in place lol. We then reversed ourselves back to shore and decided to try the second peddle boat that was brought out by mistake. The second boat was even worse lol. The second boat had the same issue of only circling left when peddling forward, only this boat had a broken seat back which also made peddling a struggle. We went back to the rental shack to return our life jackets, the person working was super nice and offered us another boat, but we declined because at that point we were over it. The rental person did reach out to the owner for us and we got a refund about a week later. I just can't help but wonder about the condition of their other boats since we tried two different boats and both we broken.

I really enjoyed getting out on the water. They have paddle boats and paddle boards that the kids seem to sit on and paddle like canoes while wearing life jackets. Erick, the proprietor of Northwest Traps, has a pretty interesting story. After blasting out of…read moreBellingham on an Alaskan fishing boat at an early age and spending subsequent years crabbing and fishing, he got to wondering if there was a better way to build a stackable crab pot. If only he knew how to weld, right? So as soon as he gets back to shore, he teaches his own ass how to weld -- all so he can make this pot idea a reality. After testing and refining the pot with his fellow fishing community, he's now known for producing the best pots in the region -- so much sturdier and more durable than the competition, with super exacting welds and webbing. They are meant to last for years and years, and they do. He's now busy building larger commercial traps for many of the local tribes, along with outfitting the biggest fisheries in Canada and Alaska. Could you buy a crappy Big 5 pot for 90 bucks? Yes, yes you could. And it will bend out of shape and rust all to shit in minutes and you'll be just one more person throwing garbage into the sea (and probably pulling back WAY less crab when it's all said and done). People seem to feel his pots radically out-trap the others, which is why he has a faithful following. He hooked me up with a sweet monster pot for my paddleboard, and I couldn't believe the quality. I also went on a crab charter and watched his pots pulled up, one after the other, out of Bellingham Bay with WAY over the legal limit of Dungeness in each one. So yes, this is the place you want.

Prices are pretty reasonable and we chose the two hour option due to our limited time during the sunset period. The staff were busy but friendly and assisted us with our kayaks. They will brief you about the kayaks, safety and where to go. Now, I would select a longer time to truly appreciate Deep Cove's natural beauty when you aren't dodging other kayaks or boats. The traffic can be somewhat chaotic in the summer time and it is main area for a lot of boaters heading out of the cove. We kayak around three islands within our two hour option, but didn't relax as much as we want. Again, the salt water, slight wind, and being in the 80's made it a wonderful but brief time.

Our guides were knowledgeable and got us in and out of our kayak without us getting our feet wet. I didn't give five stars for two reasons. First, the two guides seemed a bit lax, they mostly paddled with us instead of taking lead and sweep positions, despite the fact that two out of the six of us had never kayaked before. They did look back periodically to check on everyone, but it was still strange compared to other kayak tours I've been on. Second, they didn't take pictures of us, other tours I've been on do it as a matter of course and email or post pictures to everyone. Still, this was a very worthwhile experience, and everyone enjoyed the views, the seals we saw in the water, etc., and no one had trouble keeping up despite the wind and the range of both ages and kayaking experience.

Because now I know exactly what Santa is bringing him (Great job, Santa. Nailed it.) We did successfully shop for the people we came in for...one lucky person is getting a Yeagers gift card (which honestly feels like a win for everyone). I also found the cutest raincoat ever, cowboys, cows, and horses, plus matching rain boots, BOTH marked down. I mean come on. Instant joy. Yeagers has an amazing selection of high-quality, top-tier outdoor clothing brands, a massive toy section, a great shoe department, and just so many things you didn't know you needed until you see them. It's one of those places where you go in for "one thing" and leave smiling with a cart full of happiness. Highly recommend especially during the holidays.
